View Full Version : Robert Horry: Rudy Tomjanovich was a better coach than Phil Jackson and Greg Popovich

Here are a few things I think: Brent Barry was one of the smartest players I ever played with in the NBA. Rudy Tomjanovich was the best coach I ever had, not Phil Jackson or Gregg Popovich. Kobe Bryant was the hardest working player I ever played with. The Triangle is just a fancy name for the same plays that 50 percent of the NBA runs. Dennis Rodman was a genius. Basketball is a ruthless business. Winners don’t take no shit.

Interesting read: http://www.theplayerstribune.com/robert-horry-kobe-phil-jackson-lakers/

When I got traded to the Lakers in ’97, Kobe Bryant was just a rookie. The dude couldn’t shoot threes. We would play this shooting game every day after practice. It was me, Kobe, Brian Shaw, Mitch Richmond and Kurt Rambis. Kobe would lose every time. We would get to practice the next day and sure enough, Kobe would already be there shooting nothing but threes. Like clockwork, at the end of practice he’d say, “Let’s play the game! I’m ready for you.” And we would beat his ass again.

He would never stop. It was incredible. He practiced until one day, a couple months later, he finally won. If you literally said, “Kobe, I bet you can’t make five in a row by dropping the ball and kicking it in from half court,” that mother****er would go out there and practice it until he could do it. And that’s what people don’t understand when they talk about champions — when they talk about a winner’s mentality. Kobe’s dedication to the game is unreal. And I mean that in the truest sense … it was literally unbelievable.

Whenever I hear people crying about Kobe yelling at people in practice, or wondering whether or not LeBron is best friends with his teammates, I just roll my eyes. You know how many off-court conversations I had with the Zen-Master Phil Jackson in my entire time with the Lakers? One. I was sitting in the trainer’s room getting treatment and he was sitting on the table across from me.

“What happened with you and Danny Ainge in Phoenix?” he asked.

“I didn’t like him, so I blew up and threw a towel at him. I didn’t handle it the right way.”

“Okay.”

And that was it. We won three titles together. Go figure.

The polar opposite of that was my relationship with Rudy T. He understood that even though he was the coach, we could see things that he couldn’t see from the bench. We could hear things and feel things on the court that he couldn’t see. First thing T would say was, “What’s going on out there?” He would ask us the plays we would want to run sometimes and get a feel for what we were comfortable with.

If we ran a play and it worked, T would tell us to run it again. Phil not so much. Same with Pop. They are both great in their own right, but based on personal experience, T was the greatest NBA coach. I know he doesn’t have nearly as many championships, but sometimes we give one person too much credit for titles.

Maybe Durant will pick things back up again.

Agreed. Phil Jackson had Shaq and Jordan

Popovich is so full of himself he had tim duncan on the ****ing bench when they only need a rebound.

Hakeem is the best player Horry played with, this man beat Patrick Ewing and Shaquille O'Neal to win his two championships.

Shaq beat Rik Smits, Dikembe Mutombo, and Kenyon Martin.

Duncan beat Ben Wallace.

I also think he was a better coach too. You don't win a championship with the worst franchise in the League that easily. He had Hakeem but he was playing in the Center stacked 90's.

People close to a situation tend to be incredibly biased. I often find those closest to a situation often give a poor evaluation.

As you can see from his comments on Phil, Horry's criteria is based on who he had good conversation with that didn't end in a sweaty towel thrown in their face as opposed to who's actually the better Coaches.

Phil and Pop fall somewhere between Rudy and Ainge. :lol

"Best coach I've played with" can mean a lot of different things to people. Might even be interpreted as the coach who was his best friend.

Hakeem is the best player Horry played with, this man beat Patrick Ewing and Shaquille O'Neal to win his two championships.

Shaq beat Rik Smits, Dikembe Mutombo, and Kenyon Martin.

Duncan beat Ben Wallace.

Shaq vs Hakeem in the playoffs

Shaq 29/11 56%
Hakeem 23/9/ 48%

:facepalm Bran is only 30 and is currently in the middle of a 2-2 finals series. You can't compare his career with someone who is already retired.

Kobe has one "farewell tour" year left on a lottery squad and will probably end up barely playing after getting one of his injuries that always pop up when the team is struggling. His career is over. In his case, we can make a comparison.

Horry has more rings, AND more combined rings and mvps.

Pretty obvious who impacts winning more.

Maybe i wasnt clear, i just meant people close to a situation are often biased and not objective

Being close to a situation does not mean you like the people around you. Eg. sometimes you hate people you work with everyday.

Horry might simply like rudy the most.

I really, really wanted to hear what he said about Rodman.

And there's nothing wrong with him picking Rudy T as better than both Phil and Pop. He won two rings with those two Rockets team that only had Hakeem as a superstar. He was legit.

It's not as if he's saying, "Byron Scott was a better coach than Phil and Pop.

dude couldnt handle the pressure in LA... phil came back and coached the same squad to the playoffs the very next year

seems phil was the better coach

rudy t is probably just more of a players coach. one that gets along with team mates on a personal level more

Does that change the fact that whatever happened Rudy T indeed practically had a nervous breakdown and quit midway through a season? People in la didn't forget that.

lol what

I guess a ruptured achilles was an exaggeration

a torn rotator cuff was an exaggeration

Kobe has always chased records so you know he would have loved to play every single game the last 2 seasons to get close to that Kareem scoring total and he would be on pace to pass him at age 38/39 if he never got injured.

Damn, I'm again agreeing with kenneth on something.

Rudy was not a great coach, period. He had Dream and a pretty good team surrounding Dream, but that's it. Like kenneth said, when he came to LA, he couldn't hack it and quit halfway through the season.

At times, Phil and Pop do get overrated (because both one titles with superstar-filled rosters), but they've proved themselves time and again to be great coaches.

I remember this one interview with Horry, where the guy asked Horry something like,

"Your coach Phil Jackson has won 9 NBA championships as a head coach. Do you think he's a genius?"

And Horry just straight out stared at the guy like he was nuts for a few seconds, then he got this really weird look on his face and then he shook his face and he said something like,

"No, he's no genius, all he does is........." then he paused for a second and stopped what he was about to say and then he shook his head and he just started laughing and then he said something like,

"naw man, he's no genius".

You could just see the look on his face and how he started to laugh, he could barely even hold it in at even the slightest suggestion that Jackson was some kind of genius.

iirc, neither the Lakers nor the Spurs wanted Horry to re-sign.

Great clutch player, appreciate him and what he did for us, but he was a lazy shit most of the time. Of course he's gonna say it's the coach he likes the most (Rudy is underrated though).
