If it's not the fuse, check brake switch next

"Brake light switch failure is quite common on the allroad (all late VW and Audi's). The symptoms of failure are typically the 3 light salute in the instrument cluster (Suspension, ABS and Engine). The effects of the failure can be nothing visible to brake lights not working to zero boost to the motor. That's right I said zero boost. This $20 part is monitored by the ECU and other subsystems in the car and will effect their choices of performance mode. You should carry a spare in the glove box. I'm on number three as of 92,000 miles."
Yeah this sounds like my issue

You could also have a short. We had a similar issue, tried similar cheap fixes, and it turned out to be a very expensive wiring issue.

Headlight wire was shorting on the frame; my dad said it was a fairly dangerous scenario. Was very expensive. Just saying, eventually you might have to have it looked at.

What's wrong with that? That's a very good, reliable car.
