View Full Version : Here's why Lebron's FG% is so horrible

In these playoffs, he's shooting 32.5% on isolations, which is far below league-average.
His poor isolation FG% is crippling his overall FG%, since isolations make up the biggest part of Lebron's game - he isolates on 32.7% of his possessions, #1 in the league:

So if you want to know why Lebron is shooting so poorly, it's because on 32.7% of his possessions (his isolations), he shoots 32.5%.

What was Jordan's isolation FG% in the 96 playoffs? What was the reason he shot such a poor FG% in the finals?

He's shooting 32% on isolations for a whole playoff run, averaging 5 turnovers a game, vs relatively easy opponents (until the Finals), and he wants people to believe that he's the best player in the game?

to be fair, kobe in 04 and 08 played the two best defenses in modern history.
the other teams don't come even close.

In 2004 Kobe did.. That's true.. But Kobe was still 2nd fiddle to Shaq at that time - it doesn't make sense to compare what someone did as a 2nd option, to what someone is doing as the #1 option.
Otoh, when Kobe was the number 1 option (2005-present), he never faced a playoff defense as good as 1998 Utah's 100.3 defensive rating..
Ditto for Lebron - 1998 Utah had a lower playoff defensive rating than any of Lebron's Finals opponents, including this year's Warriors.

There's a case to be made that if he didn't have his physical gifts he would have worked on refining his game, as it stands he still looks raw as hell and his only post move is an offensive foul if any other player did it.

Would also love to know why MJ shot poorly, and what his isolation FG% was.
Defenders in that era didn't have to guard weakside 3-pointers, so they didn't have to BE on the weakside - all defenders remained on the strongside and/or in the paint, and therefore closest to help on strongside action:
http://www.gifsforum.com/images_new/gif/other/grand/b3a137407d27d606c7deadf6017cad76.gif
Otoh, in today's game, defenders must guard weakside 3-pointers.. To defend weakside 3-pointers, defenders must position themselves BEHIND the painted area on the far weakside, therefore leaving the paint wide open while being furthest away to help on strongside action:
http://cdn.makeagif.com/media/6-05-2015/P5Zone.gif
MJ never faced a paint that was wide open with no defenders.. EVER.. This is a fact.. He also never faced a strongside and paint that were both completely empty with zero help defenders - there was no weakside spacing to take potential help defenders to the weakside and clear the paint like today's game - in MJ's era, help defenders stayed on the strongside and in the paint at all times.
People counter by saying the help defenders MJ faced on the strongside were guarding other players.. But so are today's help defenders - they have a man they're guarding too, but they must guard them on the weakside, and therefore further away from helping on the strongside.. That's the effect of spacing - it makes defenders help from further away.

He's a garbage 1 on 1 player on both ends of the floor, but he is good at stacking teams, and tellin his teammates what to do in order to be successful. I think he would be a much better coach/gm than actual player. His career has been a disappointment as a player, even with the backing of the league and media

If by "everything they can" you mean "absolutely nothing besides assigning a single defender to him" for most of the first 5 games, then you're correct.
