I don't remember any of them saying shit like this.

The best players in the world are such because they are arrogant hard working ego maniacs that absolutely believe they are the best in the world and/or best ever.
Jordan, you think Michael ****ing Jordan didn't think he was the best player on the planet?
Charles Barkley used to say he thought nobody in the world was better than him at basketball. He said save for MAYBE Michael Jordan, he said MJ was the only player that made him 2nd guess.
Wilt Chamberlain til the day he died thought he was the best center/player ever save for occasionally giving Russell the nod.
Bill Russell also to this day thinks HE was the best player/center EVER.
Top tier all-time players have crazy amounts of confidence in themselves. They've got to, in their positions of winning multiple MVP's, dominating night in and night out, etc.

Yes...because there is some validity to it.
If Kobe said he was the best in the world it would be like common knowledge, when Lebron says it...people get mad and make a big deal out of it because its not true.

Lmfao the hypocrisy of the media and this forum is RIDICULOUS and I am going to point it out.
If lebron says he is the best then everyone criticizes him, but if mj or kobe say they are the best and act cocky then everyone says it is a winners mentality and it is okay.
If lebron yells at his coach then he is a bad person or bad attitude. If kobe and mj yell at their coaches its because they want to win so bad they will do anything.
These types of assumptions are from your own thought and are not a FACT; but what each 3 players did in this statement are FACT.
But I dont worry as a lebron fan because everyone said the same about kobe in years such as 06-08. Bad attitude, hes a loser, nobody wants to play with him(still pretty true), ballhog; but see how winning changes things.
When lebron retires he will for sure end up top 5 b/c he will win another ring or 2 and he will continue to put up amazing numbers

I'll upload one tonight from 1970's where he's even more arrogant about it if you think this is the only time he's stated he believes he's the best ever.
There's another interview where he says his grandkid asked if he was as good as MJ an he said his reply was "you've got the question backwards".
He believes he was the best ever. It's not projecting, it's what he repeats any time the question is brought up.

No. Michael Jordan stated it and it is on record in the book "Who's Running the Asylum? Inside the Insane World of Sports Today"
Comment:
After the Bulls' seventy first win of the season, reporters who were surrounding Michael Jordan asked him not to be bashful, but to tell them who he thought was the best basketball player of all time. Quite seriously, he replied "I think it's me."
So, not only did he say that he was the best currently, but he said that he was the best ever.

The worst about was that he did not seem confident in what he said at all. It almost seemed like he was trying to convince himself that he was the best in the world. He lacks conviction.
When CM Punk said he was the best in the world, I believed it. And he wasn't even the best, but at least he was actually convincing.

Truly great players let their game speak for it's self and are recognized as the "best in the world" by their peers and the basketball community alike.
For example:
Shaquille O'Neal May 19, 2001:
I told Kobe he was my idol. I'm serious. He's playing phenomenal basketball. He's the best player in the league, by far.
He's been getting his points, getting everybody involved, drawing and kicking, doing the right things. Somebody once said the mark of a great player is how you make the other players around you play. I now can truly say that Kobe Bryant is the best player in this league.
http://www.nba.com/playoffs2001/finals/west/recap_lal_sas_010519.html?nav=ArticleList
June 4th 2001 ESPN.com:
Or in Bryant's case, coming down in the land of maturity. In five short weeks, he's all grown up, even if he still hasn't celebrated his 23rd birthday. His development into the best all-around player in the game today is the primary reason the Lakers have made their own leap, from an underachieving regular-season team to a playoff juggernaut with 15-0 in its crosshairs.
The best players in the world are such because they are arrogant hard working ego maniacs that absolutely believe they are the best in the world and/or best ever.

Of course they think that, I mean JR Smith probably thinks he's better than Thompson and Curry if you asked him. But they are not supposed to say that THEMSELVES. You let someone else call you the best. MJ never stood at a podium and said, "I'm the best player in the world". I don't recall anyone else ever doing that. The closest I can think of is Shaq calling himself the the most dominant but even then, he's not using words like "best", etc...And I'm not even sure if he called himself WHILE he was still playing...I know he does it all the time now..........

So, not only did he say that he was the best currently, but he said that he was the best ever.
And he was asked the question directly and he answered it honestly. Its not like he was asked, "Do the Bulls have a chance to come back in this series?" And he's like yeah, "of course we do, I'm the best player in the world and since I'm on the team, we always have a chance"....
Its not remotely the same situation.......

I just don't really believe this. I've never heard MJ in a press conference or even an interview say that, and I'd let that slide at an interview because that's different than saying it at a press conference in front of the entire media. Honestly, I'm sure many players have probably said it a quote, interview etc...but not during a press conference during the NBA Finals and that wasn't even the question that was asked. When the reporter asked him if they still had a chance or whatever he said, Lebron chose to answer it by saying he's the best player in the world...
There's many different ways he could have answered it and he probably should have kept it on the court related...yes we have a chance because we fight to the end, we'll have a great gameplan, we're very confident in our abilities...Something about the team was going to do win, not just, "oh well I'm Lebron and we got me on the team, so yeah thats all the matters". It wasn't a good move.........

To me it just feels like it was a calculation by him before game 6 to instill confidence in his team and get them ready to force a game 7. Obviously the calculation didn't work, and instead it was a talking point for the Warriors and the Cavs came out and laid an egg.

Basically, he knows his team is starting to come back down to earth, and lack confidence in their shot's (Delly, Iman, JR), so he goes out there and says "hey, im the best in the world, I got this", and it was intended to have the psychological effect of taking the pressure off of them cause Lebron was gonna make it happen, thereby having the effect of getting them to actually play better and hit more shots by being more loose. Just a guess.

Bill Russell was arguably the most arrogant player in NBA history. He revealed in his autobiography, Red and Me, that after his rookie season his coach Red Auerbach said to him, "Do you know how good you are?" Russell responded, "Yeah, I know." Coach Auerbach then says, "You're the best player playing basketball." Russell responded, "I know that."
He played in 10 game sevens and would always wear a black suit to the game. Sam Jones asked him why he did that, and he replied, "I'm the undertaker. I come to bury these guys." Someone asked him if he was ever nervous or scared when it came to playing a game seven. He retorted, "Listen, there was no reason for me to be scared or nervous. I did not have to play against Bill Russell and the Celtics. What was there to be nervous or scared about?"
In 1974 a few years after he retired, Kareem was dominating. Russell said the following about Kareem,
