In recent years I heard nice guitar solo Canon rock (or its cover by Funtwo):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNeBdp7L4_U

All-time: Slash, Brian May, Gilmour (Pink Floyd), Hendrix.

Less known as super talented guitarists: Mike Oldfield or good call by Mr. Jabbar - George Harrison.

Oldfield, best bits from 1:55 min. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZOFBf3AeFE&index=11&list=PL042663BEDBA736D7

Me likes.

I prefer musical soloists over shredding though, so maybe I'm not exactly thinking "shredders" as much as soloists.

That's why Brian May is the ultimate guitar soloist to me. The musicality and emotion he can convey with a guitar is second to none.

Jimmi is another perfect example of pure musicality and feeling in guitar soloing. He was one of those players where it was like the guitar was no longer just a guitar, it was this living breathing thing that was speaking to you! Love Jimmy. One of my first loves on guitar along with Brian May.

He has so many good songs it's hard to pick a fav. Especially with the sheer volume of albums he's released over the past decade or two.

I fell in love with him back in the early 90's when he was doing his thing w/ Praxis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Praxis_%28band%29); playing w/ Bootsy and them...doing stuff like this stuff like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EHw_lIc6EY

He only got better as the years went on. Stuff he did solo, stuff he did w/ Claypool and others...none if is it bad.

I like a lot of his slower emotional stuff too...like the entire album Colma is mostly emotional stuff, with far less shredding. Then there are the "Pikes" albums.

Always liked this one off Colma https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Nj1D2y-PY8

This was was great too, also off Colma: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X-vtyGZtK0

Another from Colma, in honor of Father's Day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr4Ixrkz5Vc

He's def. up there

Not as a shredder per-say, but as a talented guitarist.

Carlos in '70s = dazzling speed we're talking malmsteen fast (which i also didn't yngwie see on here) when he was hanging out with McLaughlin and G Benson

But he abandoned it when big hair showed up, heard an interview where he said basically speed had become more important to musicians than music and he was done with all that.

Speaking of McLaughlin and G Benson...... if this is a thread on shredding, why aren't we talking about real speed? Those guys had to buy new fretboards all the time, scorched em up

George Benson was faster than all them guys listed in this thread. If you could catch him in a late night smoky backroom in Chicago or LA playin absolute jazz with guys like Grant Green or Elvin Jones you knew what celerity was all about... because they were issuing fire extinguishers and flame retardant clothes at the door

Also Joe Pass was amazingly fast especially when you calculate he was playing as fast as all these guys.... but doing it while improvising 3 lines at once - bass, comp and melody all blistering fast

Also Michael Schenker

Those who are Ozzy fans are probably familiar with his early 80's live album called "Speak of the Devil." (though the wiki page says some was not live and crowd noise was added to a few songs) It consists of nothing but Black Sabbath songs.

The guitarist on that album was Brad Gillis (filled in for the deceased Randy Rhodes) At the time he was the ex-guitarist for the band Night Ranger. To hear him totally slay the guitar on the Ozzy album...makes you wonder why he played with a band like Night Ranger.

That Ozzy album was only time Gillis recorded with him and soon went back to Night Ranger and Jake E. Lee stepped in after Gillis.

Slash is great but I don't think he has the same level of technical skill that Buckethead's got.

He's just more well-known due to GnR. Again, not saying he's bad (he's an all-time great in his own right), but Buckethead is on another level.

Metal - Malmsteen
Classic Rock - Jeff Beck
Blues - B.B. King
Jazz - John Scofield
Soul - Cornell Dupree
Fusion - Frank Gambale
Bluegrass - Tony Rice
Classical - Andres Segovia
R & B - Eric Gale
Country - Danny Gatton
Latino - Al DiMeola

I've been playing for over 35 years. All styles. There's many more I can mention, but enough to chew on here. Seen some great choices - seem to have a few players in here.

I don’t care to listen to much of what I’d call “shredding”. My favorites are Gary Moore, both from the Allman brothers(I enjoy Dickey betts), Bb King, Jimi, Mark knopfler, and Gilmour. I’m trying to listen to a song not be beat over the head by notes. I say that knowing some of them could do that as well.

George Lynch was great. Suprised OP mentioned him - he doesn't get a lot of attention these days.

My all time favorite has to be Steve Clark though.
