View Full Version : Why are South Americans so terrible at English?

All these South American footballers moving to England and they can't speak English despite living there for years(Tevez, Aguero, Sanchez, Suarez)
Never heard Messi speak a word English.
Is it because they are too stupid or what? Dont buy the "poor background" argument, because we see African people learn English much quicker.
Even the French are better.

why do they need to learn English?
teams will still pay them. i could see why you wouldnt want to spend hours learning a new language in your prime
its easier to learn when you are younger
how is your spanish?

It's really not a valid comparison. Why would someone in the United States need to speak something other than English?
He didn't ask why people in Spanish speaking countries don't speak English. He asked why people who move to England don't learn English. Don't you honestly not see how that isn't the same?

Poor background argument is pretty good. Most of those guys come from very poor families. I'm brazilian, I can tell you guys like Barbosa, Anderson (who used to play for Man Utd) can't even speak gramatically correct portuguese. A guy like Kaka for instance is different. He was born in a stable middle class family and he can speak italian, spanish and english. His english is not bad and he has just moved to Orlando.

Why would Messi speak English? I don't know about Aguero/Tevez/Suarez but Sanchez probably does speak some English but not enough or not fluently enough to do interviews in English

they don't care or bother to learn.
They play the sport, pick the cheque and go home.
I don't think any of them intend to settle in England...coz the harsh weather.

jesus christ you're vastly misinformed.
in the southwest alone, being able to speak spanish is a huge advantage and will help you land jobs very quickly.
this is you're second post today where you're wrong. stop misinforming people.:facepalm

How do you play a team sport without speaking the same language as your teammates?
The more I learn about the sport of soccer, the bigger of a joke it seems.

Having been to Mexico and Spain. I've met people from Spain/Portugal who spoke English very well. Can't say the same for Mexico. Some of the workers even at the top notched hotels in Cancun didn't know English :confusedshrug:. Knowing some Spanish is essential to travel to South America.

What exactly am I wrong about? All I said was it's not appropriate to compare people who can't speak Spanish in the United States to people who can't speak English in England.

I know for a fact that most professionals (doctors, lawyers, engineers, architects, etc) in Mexico, and I would imagine the rest of Latin America, have at least a working level of English. It's almost a requirement to land a good job. Compare that to the USA, how many professionals know anything other than English? Stop talking out of your ass. :coleman:

 You must've been slumming in Mexico, most people with college degrees know at least enough English to get by. :lol

You clearly implied anything other than English is not important in America and asked why it would be.
He said you're wrong and he gave you an example.

No, I said Spanish isn't as important in America as English is in England. Please explain how that is somehow untrue.

Re-read your original post.
And Spanish is very important in the US. While the majority of hispanics reside in the southwest, there are large clusters of hispanics and latinos spread across the country. You have many mexicans in chicago, cubans in south florida, hell, the US has puerto rico...you know? The island of people that speak Spanish and despise Pitbull for embarrassing their beautiful people.

We found out later we were in a really bad part of town once we got back to our hotel. The receptionist said we shouldn't have gone there especially as tourists. Oh well.

Not surprised. In the nicer parts of any Mexican city, English is common among the educated upper middle class, in the slums, not so much :lol Good thing you didn't get a scare.

I was wondering this is as well but maybe it would be beneficial for him for marketing purposes but not like it matters as he's a premier athlete.

Re-read it, still don't see the issue.
Nobody in America needs to know any language other than English. It can be advantageous to know another language, but you don't need to. You'll be fine as an English only speaker in American. It's simply not comparable to not being able to speak English in England.
It makes sense to say "how can someone live in England and not speak English". It wouldn't make the same kind of sense to say "how can someone live in Spain and not speak English"? Why the hell would they? It's not an English speaking country. It's like being bewildered by the idea of people in Italy not being able to speak German.
