Which of "the excuses" didn't happen.

Take your emotions and feeling for the situation out of it....

What didn't happen?

It's a great ad. Read it this morning at the kitchen table with my son and a cup of coffee. It's strong.

I never remember Mj being scrutinized to such a degree honsetly. Apples to oranges. But what is for sure is Mj had the most protected image ever in sports, to this day. So any methods they use for Lebron were surely developed during Jordan's run.

Lexcuse.

MJ wasn't scrutinized? You realize how many books were written about him, some of which weren't in the most flattering light? The Jordan Rules and Michael & Me come to mind.

Was MJ protective of his image? Hell, yes he was. Just about all celebrities are, especially ones in the prime of their careers. MJ's not really protective of his anymore. Neither is Kobe, as he winds down his career. Bron still is (and I understand why).

But Nike never made any excuses for MJ.

No excuses necessary, just a fact. Books can't compare to the instant buzz news stories have in modern times. The media climate is entirely different than 20 years ago. Tell me it's not.:coleman:

Ummm Nike never made excuses for Jordan losing or even address any of his controversial stuff like his gambling. Sure his image was protected but not to that degree.

They never went out of their way for Jordan like they have for Lebron. This ad is silly cause it was just so unnecessary. All it does is make Lebron look really bad. It's just literally a long list of excuses. On top of that, it's confusing. You can argue that its making fun of Lebron/Cleveland.

Like what? That he lost? Cause he was heavily criticized for not being a team player before he won unlike Magic and Bird.

His gambling? That was a big story back then too.

How about you mention stuff if you actually have an argument. I'm not saying his image wasn't protected. But so is everyone's including LeBron. And anyway, this isn't really about off the court stuff. On the court, there really isn't much Jordan had to "slide by" for.

The funny thing about this ad is that there was no damage control even needed. Pretty much everyone gave him a pass for not winning this year. So at this point it just makes Lebron look like a bitch. Glad we can agree on that.

True, but by the same token I don't see what damage this can control either. Everyone who watched these Finals got what they wanted to get out of it.
You either saw:
A) herculean effort that ended still not being enough.

B) Some sort of inefficient failure worthy of celebration.

C)some combination of the 2.

I seriously doubt the ad would change anyone's mind on what they saw.

Interesting too in how effective those practices were in regards to MJ, and how hamfistedly ineffective it's been for LeBron.

Perhaps a measure of the difficulty in crafting an image for two such wildly divergent personalities.
I think it's worked wonderfully to be honest, have you seen lebron's shoe sales? His media profile is likely near its ceiling for what possible in modern times. There won't ever be another Mj image wise, that's not possible in this era. This is the era of anti fans, guys who are still fans but just in the negative sense of the word. They still tune in to see every game and help drive ratings. They actively root against guys whenever previous eras if you didn't care for a player you were more likely to just be indifferent and not be interested enough to watch. Just look at this forum and see how much time people who "hate" kobe or lebron invest in the said player. Guys that spend time editing pictures and gifs and the like, putting together highlight reels of turnovers, etc. It's actually quite hilarious.
