Exactly 6 years ago TODAY, the world lost the greatest entertainer of all time, Michael Jackson. June 25th, 2009. It was one of those days that many people will remember.

Though he had personal issues in life (skin disease, tabloid/media bullshit), let's not forget the amazing music and entertainment he put out for FOUR DECADES. Today... we remember a true legend.

RIP MJ

He didn't purposely dangle that baby you know... He wanted to show his fans the baby and it ended up biting his wrist. Maybe if you read learned some info on it OTHER than the media and tabloids, you'd know.

Mike's work with his brothers is severely underrated.
Albums like "Third Album" "Moving Violation" "Destiny" and "Triumph" are just as good as "Off The Wall" and "Bad".

In January 1984, while filming a pepsi commercial with his brothers, Michael's hair caught on fire and he had 3rd degree burns. Its the reason why he started wearing wigs later on, and its also what got him addicted to painkillers. Really sad, honestly.

Elvis didn't have Michael's popularity worldwide, not even close. MJ was at his peak or still great 1985-1993 when the iron curtain was falling, so more and more people got to listen to him.
Beatles weren't global enough too.

Okay, MJ kills it in the comparison of top 3 albums also. The Beatles putting out 3 times as many albums doesn't make them better. I love them, but you're making it look like they're not even worth comparing which is unfair IMO. I would never say he's the GOAT (incredibly subjective in music) and hes not the most original voice (whatever that means, in reality probably belongs to an opera singer). I'm just saying the popularity is pretty close, and sure the Beatles have more great songs than MJ, but he has some of the best of all time.

I don't disagree (for the most part) but I don't remember the last time a musician's death sparked the same kind of reaction as Jackson's, though it seemed to peak a few years after his death rather than in the immediate aftermath.

Michael Jackson put out 10 studio albums. 6 if you only count the albums he released as an adult (from Off The Wall on.) The Beatles released 12 or 13 studio albums.....it's hard to find a definitive list because the US albums were different from the UK albums. They released a whole bunch more EPs, but only 12 or 13 albums.

Beatlemania is a phenomenon that will probably never happen again. At one point they had top 5 singles on the Billboard chart. No one has ever done that

http://www.billboard.com/files/styles/promo_650/public/media/beatles-top-5-chart-650.jpg

They also had three straight number ones in a row. That is for 14 straight weeks one Beatles song replaced another at number 1 with no other artist in between. They had three more number 1's that year.

Just because you own something, doesn't necessarily mean you talk about it. And even if you talked about it, would it truly be about why you own it.?

People talk about something, which inherently makes you want to try and own it. And can you really argue that after you own it, you aren't repeatedly talking about the same thing?

Now compare popularity.

but that isn't how it works in the real world.

if you own something, and you talk about it, then of course its gonna be "relished" or even sought after by other people.

that doesn't necessarily make it right or wrong, but thats the reality of it.

I still remember that day when it happened... It was crazy, with him being hospitalized and everyone just confused about what was going on. Then the news came, and it was hard to believe for awhile.

I grew up with his music and he passed when I was entering my last year of high school so it was kind of a sad/symbolic end to being a kid. It's crazy how a person with so many personal problems and abuse growing up could produce such amazing music. Man was a true legend. RIP.

It was a great feat and what you say is true, but would that make people buy 5 of their singles at the same time?

I think what you're describing is a result of the music*, not the other way round.

Also I think tons of people would say their later work was their best, but I love their early stuff.

* the fact that they were a naturally occurring boy band didn't hurt either.

The Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan was not the start of Beatlemania in the US, they were already all over the radio (http://www.beatlesagain.com/the-beatles-on-ed-sullivan.html). 35% of the entire US population tuned in for their debut, so there already had to be an immense interest in them.
On Sunday, Feb. 9, 1964, over 73 million Americans gathered around television sets to see what all the excitement was about. For several weeks American radio stations had been saturating the airwaves with Beatles music. The power of radio had led to sales of millions of Beatles singles and albums. For weeks, the country had been warned "The Beatles Are Coming!" The American press picked up on the story, with several magazines and newspapers running feature stories on the group. Two days earlier, CBS and ABC showed film of The Beatles' arrival in America at New York's Kennedy Airport on their evening news shows. But the big event was The Beatles' first live appearance on American television, which took place on the country's most popular variety program, "The Ed Sullivan Show".
The already had a million selling single a month before the Sullivan show

"I Want to Hold Your Hand" was an instant best seller with over 250,000 copes sold in its first three days of release. By Jan. 10, 1964, the record had sold over one million units.

KevinNYC, you are touting the fact that the Beatles held the top 5 spots on billboard and 35% of US viewership on the Ed Sullivan show but you are neglecting the context of the era. Back then there was a lot less competition in entertainment. First of all there was no internet. There was less than a dozen TV channels compared to 500+. This is only the tip of the iceberg.

Less bands, less choices = an easier road to dominating the majority of listeners.

Them coming America and Sullivan was huge. Everyone knew back then once you play on Sullivan, your sales go through the roof.

Also, their were know black/soul charts for about 15 months between late 1963-early 1965. Don't know if that had an impact.

White America was looking for a replacement with Elvis. It wasn't gonna be Roy Orbinson or Gerry & the Pacemakers that's for sure.

http://nypost.com/2009/06/29/report-michael-jacksons-horrific-autopsy-results/

Michael Jackson autopsy report is horrific

An autopsy on Michael Jackson revealed that the King of Pop’s emaciated body was riddled with needle marks and scars, and his head was virtually bald, it was reported today.

Jackson’s body had wasted away to a mere 112 pounds, and his stomach was completely empty except for partially dissolved pills, according to the London Sun.

His hips, thighs and shoulders were covered with needle wounds, believed to have come from shots of painkillers, and he was wearing a wig when he was found because his hair had been reduced to a “peach fuzz” on his scalp, the report said.

“He was skin and bone, his hair had fallen out, and he had been eating nothing but pills when he died,” a source close to the singer’s entourage told the paper.

“Injection marks all over his body and the disfigurement caused by years of plastic surgery show he’d been in terminal decline for some years.”

There were four fresh injections around his heart, presumably from attempts to pump adrenaline into it to jumpstart it, the paper said.

Three of them had penetrated and damaged his heart wall, while a fourth struck his ribs, the paper reported.

He also sustained several broken ribs while authorities administered CPR during his final moments Thursday.

Jackson had one spot above his left ear that was scarred and completely bald – the apparent result of burns sustained when his hair caught fire while he was filming a Pepsi commercial in 1984.

He also had numerous other scars, apparently from plastic surgery.

In addition, he had mysterious bruises on his knees and shins and cuts on his back, possibly indicating a recent fall, the paper said.

Jackson has had two autopsies performed on him: one by the Los Angeles coroner and a private one requested by the family.

The details leaked came from the official autopsy. The Sun didn’t say how it got the information.

Meanwhile, the cardiologist who was Jacko’s private doctor and performed CPR on him did it the wrong way, a Jackson family confidant claimed yesterday.

Dr. Conrad Murray found Jacko on the floor in his rented Los Angeles mansion and put him in a bed, the source said.

Medical experts say that compressions for cardiopulmonary resuscitation must be performed on a hard surface.

“Michael was on the floor first, and they put him on the bed, and then started compressions on the bed,” said the source, who had spoken to a Jackson relative. “What kind of doctor is that?”
Michael Jackson performing in 1988.Photo: AP

In a transcript of the 911 call, the person seeking help says Jackson is “on the bed.” The dispatcher says, “OK, let’s get him down to the floor.”

Edward Chernoff, a lawyer for Murray, yesterday said the doctor found Jackson in his bed with a faint pulse.

Chernoff told The Associated Press that Murray was at the pop icon’s mansion Thursday afternoon when he discovered Jackson and immediately began administering CPR.

“He just happened to find him in his bed, and he wasn’t breathing,” the lawyer said. “Mr. Jackson was still warm and had a pulse.”

Murray, who spoke to cops for three hours on Saturday, is a licensed MD and specializes in cardiology, although he is not board-certified.

Jackson hired Murray last month as he prepared for a grueling 50-date concert series in London that had been set to start in July.

Chernoff also said Murray never prescribed or gave Jackson the powerful painkillers Demerol or OxyContin. He denied reports suggesting Murray gave Jackson an injection of Demerol shortly before his death.

“Dr. Murray has never prescribed nor administered Demerol to Michael Jackson,” Chernoff said. “Not ever. Not that day. Not OxyContin for that matter.”

Not understanding this argument. There was no internet as we know it during MJ's prime, and cable TV was still in its infancy.

The Beatles are the GOAT. The fact that they had the best selling album of the 2000s, decades after they broke up, says it all. Let's see MJ pull off the same feat 30-40 years after his death. Not likely.

The pedophile accusations defined the final 16 years of his life, I'm surprised how quickly his death erased the memory of his legal troubles.
