Actually no, it was obvious that Russel was the best player in the draft. If Lakers drafted Okafor I would have been cool with it, we needed a talented bigman, but I still would have had Russel above him as a player because Russel IS the better player.

Assumption # 1 - Lakers know young bigs are always projects - hardest players to develop and hardest position to master.

Assumption # 2 - They feel good about thier chances to acquire either Cousins or LMA. I'm not a salary/trade whiz so I don't know how exactly, but a mature big is much more in line with the Lakers impatient ethos than a project like Okafor.

Assumption # 3 - The goal is a poor-mans 2000-era squad anchored around a quality big (TBD) and Russell.

Assumption #4 - Russell will get Jedi-level mentoring from Kobe and will probably flourish (barring injury I expect this regardless of how well the team does next season)
