6 rings with the GOAT, 5 rings with GoatBe.

He hasnt had success so far running the Knicks. Melo? Not good enough to gift Phil some rings

The Knicks suck so bad they actually managed to ruin the legacy of the most legendary coach in basketball history.

By the same token, neither Kobe nor Jordan had legitimate success without Phil.

It depends on how much do you think the GOAT coach can be overrated.

Overrated as a GM? Probably. But as a coach? Absolutely not. He had an amazing ability to get superstars to play within a system. He convinced two of the biggest alpha minded players ever into playing that way.

Doug Collins had MJ, Pippen and Grant for a couple of years yet they didn't win nothing. As soon as PJ shows up, they start winning rings.

Del Harris had Kobe, Shaq, Jones, and Van Excel for a few years yet they didn't win nothing. First year PJ shows up, they win a ring.

It's not a coincidence my friend. It takes a rare person to be able to get the respect of alpha dog players and convince them to buy into a system. It takes a great man to earn the respect of his players and have them follow your lead.

11 rings.

With all due respect to those examples, Pippen & Kobe were far from reaching their primes/peaks while playing under those coaches

Phil as GM is different from Phil as GOAT Coach.

Phil was great as mastering big egos and taking a talented team to the ultimate heights. He also had a great staff to support him, including Tex Winter to teach the triangle.

As a GM, he has a different role. I dont think one tarnishes the other.

He was good at dealing with egos abd putting his players in an optimal position to win. So yes, he was basically a great coach.

True but talent alone doesn't win rings. You need a coach who can get people to buy into a system and have them jell together and play as a unit. Just look at freaken OKC. Brooks was simply over his head. He didn't know how to best utilize the talents on his team. Based on talent along, they should already had a couple of rings.

It's such a lame excuse. "Oh, PJ had the best player of his era so of course he should win rings." Please, that's a layman's excuse.

He's just totally lost it now that he's 110 years old. Knicks should have made sure his brain is still functional before hiring him :lol

You can tell the difference Phil Jackson had on the Lakers, the Lakers in the late 90's were probably the most talented team in the NBA, without Phil, but they always came up short in the playoffs. They were missing mental toughness.

Phil shows up and the Lakers win 67 games and the title his first year there and this was when Kobe was averaging 22.5 ppg and only 21 ppg during the postseason, he wasn't the Kobe as we all know him today.

Yup. If PJ goes to the Lakers in 1996, they probably win a couple more rings. They had the most talent for at least a few years from 1996 - 1999. Yet, they got completely outplayed by a more structured, disciplined and better coached team in the Utah Jazz and coach Sloan in the playoffs. Coaching matters in the NBA.

How many rings Duncan got without Pops? :confusedshrug:

Or are you gonna' criminally underrated him and bash him like you do Tony Parker?

Tony Porker was there for 4 so it's clear that Duncan made it through an incredible handicap. More than makes up for any coaching influence. Tim Duncan, hold this W.

I always believe that coaching is so overrated. You can win an NBA title due to an abundance of talent.

Well... he was able to 3-peat with basically only Shaq, so that counts for something :confusedshrug:
