View Full Version : Top 10 of All Time Poll: Only users with green reputation may contribute.

06-29-2015, 02:23 AM
Let's do a little experiment here.

If you have a reputation that's in the green, you may post your top 10 of all time.

This is a good way to eliminate trolls and other users that no one cares what they have to say.

After we get enough responses, we'll average all the results together and come up with the *OFFICIAL* InsideHoops Quality User Top 10 Poll.

Top 10 lists from users with red/negative reputation will not be factored into the final results.

EDIT: UPDATED WITH THE RESULTS:

Yup definitely depends how people judge their criteria for top10. If you strictly go by ability on court, Kobe probably not in top10 (this would move a bunch of people around actually probably Wilt would be #1 rank).

How is Bird over Kobe at this point? Just askin.

Mostly because of Bird's offensive game (one of the greatest passers ever) and impact he had the boards. Not only that, but his best postseason runs are greater than Kobe's all while turning Boston back into a dynasty.

I could see why some think he and Bean are interchangeable though. Bird wasn't a slouch on the defensive end, but Kobe has him beat there.

Bird was probably the best system wing player ever. He never needed the ball in his hands to be dominant and always played within the scope of the team. It's an extremely impressive feat and really should be mentioned more for him. Kobe was a fantastic scorer but he didn't do much for the offense when he didn't have the ball. Depends what you value I suppose.

Shaq and Kobe in the low half of the Top 10 while Duncan in the Top 5-6 is a travesty for a match up that's been a wash for the better half of the last 15 years.

Why do you rate the bottom 8-10 players above LeBron? Where do you place him exactly?

Out of the top 10 players all time kobe ranks top 5 or better in every single catigory of stats/awards/records in nba history asside from season mvps in which hes tied for 7th

He doesn't rank top5 in FMVPs :pimp:

Also I'm fairly positive Bron has more records than Kobe and better playoff stats some years, but don't you rank Bron lower? (I'm not saying Bron is better btw)

His list makes more sense than many of these lists TBH because you can generally follow his criteria. DMavs stated he is ranking based on players who he thought were better than the others and winning as the best. You could argue MJ and Russell were the two most dominant forces ever as seen by their track records. Magic and Duncan also led teams to great success with their unique skills (on offense and defense respectively). Kareem was dominant too but he kinda choked for a decade and then only started winning again once magic was there (something the 4 ahead of him didn't do). Wilt was probably the most dominant ever but consistently had to beat a much better team (russell) and still managed to win once and then again vs strong competition. Bird/Shaq/Hakeem/Bron all won roughly about the same and were the best on basically all of those teams. The dominated the floor and significantly affected the games they were in. Kobe did too but not quite as much as these guys (in terms of 2-way game). It's really not much of a stretch that Kobe's on the outside looking in based on his logic IMO.

My list is different week to week almost. I don't understand how people have a SET list that never changes. There are 11 guys that make my top 10 depending on when you ask me, so I'm going out to 11.

Also, note that my top 6 always consists of the same guys, then Timmy, then the other 4 are interchangeable.

Here it is right now (only retired and almost retired players):

1. Michael Jordan
2. Bill Russell
3. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
4. Wilt Chamberlain
5. Larry Bird
6. Magic Johnson

7. Tim Duncan

8. Shaquille O'Neal
9. Hakeem Olajuwon
10. Kobe Bryant
11. Jerry West

If you do it on pure individual dominance.. or how good someone is KAJ can't be 5 .. the resume stuff is what puts russell and duncan over him because he's clearly a better player than them. It's hard to rank these guys though because in terms of pure individual dominance it's something like

Wilt
Shaq
KAJ
MJ
Bron
Magic
Bird
hakeem
Duncan
Kobe
Russell

But if you do it by mental toughness, chemistry building, closing ability it's

MJ
Russell
Magic
Duncan
Bird
Kobe
KAJ
Shaq
Wilt
bron

So it almost inverts itself with the exception of mj.. really hard to differentiate and make a list that covers both

I used to have Hakeem in at #10 but I think I've reached a point where I can say I'd rank Kobe over him. They're still tiered with one another but I can appreciate Kobe enough to include him in my top 10.

Did you really raise Kobe ranking on CHEMISTRY BUILDING :oldlol: As far as I know 2 points at the end of the game still holds the same value as 2 points made at the end of the game. One doesn't get extra credit (points) for scoring at the end of the game as opposed to the beginning.

Had Chamberlain had the "good fortune" to have had his team eliminated in the first round EIGHT times, and his playoff numbers would look a little different.

As examples, in Wilt's fist eight post-seasons, and in his first round, he averaged

38.7 ppg

37.0 ppg

37.0 ppg

38.6 ppg and on .559 shooting (in a post-season NBA of 105.8 ppg on .420 shooting)

27.8 ppg (and then 30.1 ppg, on .555 shooting, and against Russell)

28.0 ppg

28.0 ppg (and a great example of FG% at .617 in a post-season at .424, to go along with 27 rpg, and 11 apg.!))

25.5 ppg (and on .584 shooting, while his opposing center, Bellamy was at 20.0 on .421 shooting.)

Even in his 11th season, and only four months removed from major knee surgery, Chamberlain put up a first round of 23.7 ppg., 20.3 rpg, and .549.

And, in his 71-72 post-season, he had a 14.5 ppg, 20.8 rpg, .629 first round series (and in an NBA post-season of .446.)

And while Chamberlain was "losing" to the likes of Russell, Reed, and Kareem in his post-season runs...

how about Hakeem?

Psileas actually pointed this fact out long ago, but it is certainly worth repeating...

had Wilt been fortunate enough to have faced the Lakers in the post-season, from '60 thru '68, and he likely would own many playoff (or perhaps Finals) scoring records. And we are not talking about one or two "small samples" either, but rather, his entire H2H play against LA (and Minny) from '60 thru '68...and in seasons of between 7 to 12 H2H games.

Keep in mind that Russell WAS fortunate enough to have faced the Lakers FIVE times in the post-season in that span (actually six, but in the last one, he faced Wilt, and as expected, did absolutely nothing offensively), and it was against LA in which he elevated his playoff scoring and FG%. In fact, remove the Lakers from his post-seasons, and his offensive production would have dropped considerably.

Here were Russell's numbers against LA in those five series:

'62:

Russell averaged 18.9 ppg on a .457 FG% in his regular season against the NBA.

Against LA in the Finals: 22.9 ppg on a .543 FG%. Which included a game seven of 30 points and 40 rebounds.

BTW, against Wilt in the '62 EDF's: 22.0 ppg on a .399 FG%

'63:

Russell averaged 16.8 ppg on a .432 FG% in his regular season.

Against LA in the Finals: 20 ppg on a .467 FG%

'65:

Russell averaged 14.1 ppg on a .438 FG% against the NBA.

Against LA in the Finals: 17.8 ppg on a .702 FG% (yes, .702.)

BTW, against Wilt in the EDF's: 15.6 ppg on a .447 FG%

'66:

Russell averaged 12.9 ppg on a .415 FG% against the NBA.

Against LA in the Finals: 23.6 ppg on a .538 FG%

BTW, against Wilt in the EDF's: 14.0 ppg on a .423 FG%

'68:

Russell averaged 12.5 ppg on a .425 FG% against the NBA

Against LA in the Finals: 17.3 ppg on a .430 FG%

BTW, against Wilt in the EDF's: 13.7 ppg on a .440 FG%

Oh, and here were Russell's stats in the '69 Finals against Wilt:

Regular season against the NBA: 9.9 ppg on a .433 FG%

Against Wilt in the Finals: 9.0 ppg on a .397 FG%

Again, had Wilt faced the Lakers in any of his nine seasons in the league from '60 thru '68, and he likely would own at least some, (if not a vast majority), playoff and perhaps Finals, scoring records (and perhaps FG% records, as well, since Russell shot .702 against LA in '65.)

And once again, in Wilt's regular seasons, he was facing LA between 7 to 12 games in each season, with an average of about 10.

Also keep in mind that the Lakers were in the Western Conference, and Wilt only had two seasons in the Western Conference from '60 thru '68, and in one of those, his team was so bad, that he didn't make the playoffs, despite a 44.8 ppg season on .528 shooting.

Ok, here we go:

'59-60:

Against the entire NBA that season: 37.6 ppg on a .461 FG%

Against the Lakers in 9 H2H's: 36.8 ppg on a .430 FG%

High games of 41, 41, 41, 45, and 52.

'60-61:

Against the entire NBA: 38.4 ppg on a .509 FG%

Against the Lakers in 10 H2H's: 40.1 ppg on a .506 FG%

High games were 41, 41, 43, 44, 46, and 56 points.

'61-62:

Against the entire NBA: 50.4 ppg on a .506 FG%

Against LA in 9 H2H games: 51.6 ppg on a .503 FG%

High games of 48, 56, 57, 60, 60, and 78 (with 43 rebounds.)

'62-63: Against the entire NBA: 44.8 ppg on a .528 FG%

Against LA in 12 H2Hs: 48.6 ppg on a .541 FG%

High games of 40, 40, 42, 53, 63, and 72 points.

'63-64: Against the entire NBA: 36.9 ppg on a .524 FG%

Against LA in 12 H2Hs: 44.3 ppg on a .484 FG%

High games of 40, 41, 47, 49, 50, 55, and 59 points.

'64-65: Against the entire NBA: 34.7 ppg on a .510 FG%

Against LA in 8 H2Hs: 29.9 ppg on a .476 FG%

High games of 40, 40, and 41 points.

'65-66: Against the entire NBA: 33.5 ppg on a .540 FG%

Against LA in 10 H2Hs: 40.8 ppg on a .559 FG%

High games of 42, 49, 53, and 65 points.

'66-67: Against the entire NBA: 24.1 ppg on a .683 FG%

Against LA in 9 H2Hs: 26.4 ppg on a .759 FG%

High games of 32, 37, and 39 points.

'67-68: Against the entire NBA: 24.3 ppg on a .595 FG%

Against LA in 7 H2Hs: 28.1 ppg on a .638 FG%

High games of 31, 32, 35, and 53 points.

Overall, in those 86 games:

40 Point Games: 42

50 Point Games: 19

60 Point Games: 7

70 Point Games: 2

High game of 78 points.

Quote:
But let's break the post-season numbers down even more shall?

'60: Chamberlain averaged 30.5 on a FG% that was 10% OVER the post-season league average.

'62: Chamberlain averaged 33.6 ppg on a FG% that was 5% OVER the post-season league average.

'64: Wilt averaged 29.2 ppg on a FG% that was 10% OVER the post-season league average.

'65: Wilt averaged 30.1 ppg on a FG% that was 13% OVER the post-season league average.

'66: Wilt averaged 28.0 ppg on a FG% that was 7% OVER the post-season league.

And I'll throw in Wilt's '67 EDF's, as well: 21.6 ppg on a FG% that was 13% OVER the post-season league average.

Meanwhile, Russell's numbers against Wilt:

'60: 20.7 ppg on a FG% that was 5% OVER the post-season league average.

'62: 22.0 ppg on a FG% that was 1% UNDER the post-season league average.

'64: 11.2 ppg on a FG% that was 3% UNDER the post-season league average.

'65: 15.6 ppg on a FG% that was 2% OVER the post-season league average.

'66: 14.0 ppg on a FG% that was 2% UNDER the post-season league average.

and '67: 10.2 ppg on a FG% that was 7% UNDER the post-season league average.

The REALITY was, Russell hardly limited Wilt AT ALL in their post-season H2H's, and Chamberlain just CRUSHED Russell in scoring, rebounding, and FG% in ALL of them.

A "scoring" Wilt was outscoring a PRIME Russell by a 30 ppg to 17 ppg average; outrebounding Russell by a 29 rpg to 26 rpg; and outshooting Russell by a 50% to 42% margin....in their PLAYOFF H2H's. Add in their '67 EDF's, and Wilt's margins grow to 29 ppg to 16 ppg; 30 rpg to 25 rpg; and 51% to 40%.

Chamberlain DOMINATED Russell...period

yea well, him having a torn labrum isn't exactly heard from alot... I just needed a link for the validity of it, which I asked for on here not too long ago, and was actually surprised that it wasnt used more as an excuse, given how horrible his postseason was..in Minny, only one of the teams KG was on were top 10 defensively...I'm sure you were aware of this?

anybody watching during that time would have known about the injury/ not needed a link to validate..

Would have to win 3 as the man realistically. All he's done is jump ship to a stacked as fu*k team and still only managed 2/4 there..

2/6 overall is pathetic.

If he goes on to win 3 in Cleveland he might have a shot but even then it'll be because of Kyrie/love/ how many all stars does this guy need to win?:lol

What if Bynum was healthy in 2008?

What if Grant and Malone were healthy in 2004?

What if countless other injuries didn't happen during LeBron's runs?

Guess what? Injuries happen. The end. You fight through it or you don't.

in game 4 with the chance to basically clinch the series (game 5 was in CLE) lebron puts on an amazing performance by shooting 32% and scoring 20 points on 22 shots.. meanwhile his "scrub teammates" Mozgof and TT can only muster up 28/10, 12/13 respectively

I rank my GOAT list according to "best player" logic as opposed to "great career". That means the player who scored and rebounded and passed better than his peers, not he guy who was drafted to the right team and coach and had great teammates - which are factors entirely out of his control and shouldn't be credited with.

Post more just to troll. It's either that or this new shitty generation... I'm normally not against my generation is better than yours but this new box score/advanced metric generation has to be the worst.. people acting like the game only happens on the box score now..

MJ's career and what he did off the basketball court was epic. He literally transcended the game where the entire ESPN baseball crew was at his minor league games.. even with just the box score MJ still holds the majority of all playoff records. Stay mad haters.

So someone values a means of measuring a player different than you makes him a troll? :facepalm
You should know better than that

Because absolutely nobody demanded it...

6. Magic Johnson.
7. Larry Bird.
8. Kobe Bryant.
9. Doctor J.
10. Shaquille O'Neal/ LBJ.

:lebronamazed:

You seriously think Wilt and Duncan had better CAREERS than Magic? Are you kidding me?

Yes.
It's contextual, for what it's worth. Assuming you're not a troll like 97% of the other posters, I'll indulge you:
Duncan had 5 titles in 6 Finals, a rebound away from a sixth in six. A Magic like leadership that stretched to 19 seasons.

Magic unfortunately suited up for only 12, and made 9 finals but won only 5.

Wilt was the most dominant player the NBA had ever seen and it took an all time great franchise to prevent him from winning titles in the sixties. Once Wilt was traded to the Lakers he took them to 5 finals in six years.

And nope. :kobe:

Magic is the greatest "winner" in NBA history.

Chamberlain is the most dominant player ever.

BTW, for those that claim that KAJ had a greater career...

Aside from FT shooting, Wilt was a better player in every other category. And even FT shooting was deceptive. Wilt averaged 432 MADE FTs per season in his career, while Kareem was at 335 per season.

Chamberlain was a significantly better scorer, a much better rebounder, a considerably more efficient shooter from the field (keep in mind league average eFG%), a better passer, a much better defender (hell, an old Wilt beat out a peak KAJ for first-team all-defense in his LAST two seasons), and a much better shot-blocker (BTW, an old Wilt was routinely blocking the "unblockable" sky-hook.)

Furthermore, a PRIME Kareem, in his first ten seasons (and pre-MAGIC)...went to TWO Finals, won ONE, was eliminated in the first round TWICE, was beaten with HCA in '73, '74, '77), lost twice to a Sonics team with one borderline HOF player; and missed the playoffs entirely in two more seasons.

My god, in their four seasons together, an old Chamberlain held a 3-1 edge in Finals.

Furthermore, a PRIME Chamberlain was FAR more dominant against the SAME centers that a PRIME Kareem would face a few years later.

Had Chamberlain had the good fortune to have had a PRIME Magic playing alongside him for TEN seasons, and you can be sure Chamberlain would have won MANY more rings in his career.

More Kareem vs Wilt...

I'll take the clutch Chamberlain.

Must-Win Post-Season Games...

Kareem:

12-12 W-L
25.5 ppg
12.0 rpg
.521 FG% ( in post-seasons that I would guess shot about an eFG% of .470 on average.)

Wilt:

12-11 W-L
31.1 ppg
26.4 rpg
.540 FG% (in post-seasons that shot about .435 on average.)

And before some idiot claims that Kareem played half of his post-season career past his prime (and with Magic carrying him)

A PRIME Kareem from 69-70 thru 80-81:

6-8 W-L
29.8 ppg
15.7 rpg
.529 FG% (in leagues that shot around .460+)

BUT, two can play that game...

A PRIME "Scoring Wilt from 59-60 thru 65-66:

6-6 W-L (3-5 against Russell and his Dynasty, whom he shelled)
37.3 ppg
27.6 rpg
.521 FG% (in a post-seasons that I KNOW shot .417 overall.)

Kareem was a great player.

Wilt was significantly greater.

Of course, had Wilt had a prime Magic for TEN SEASONS, there would have been no question that he would have won at LEAST FIVE more rings, if not TEN.

As usual, Lazzerus/JLauber, you rely on hypotheticals to make your point in comparing the great players. It's better to stick to facts and context rather than speculation to derive possible scenarios.

Even tho I picked Wilt as the best player of all time, he didn't have the greatest career of all time, for reasons beyond his control. He did not have great coaches besides 3 seasons with Bill Sharman on the Lakers and 3 with Alex Hannum on the 76ers.

The only hypotheticals are that if Wilt and Russell swapped rosters, and if Wilt had the good fortune to have faced the Lakers FIVE times in the playoffs in the decade of the 60's (instead of NEVER.)

Clearly, at even the worst case scenario...Chamberlain would have won SIX more rings with Russell's rosters and as many as ELEVEN (if you count his '72 ring.)

And given the FACT that Russell beefed up his post-season numbers against those "centerless" Laker teams of the 60's, and given the FACT that Chamberlain just DESTROYED those Lakers in his regular season H2H's, it would have been inevitable that Wilt would hold many post-season scoring and efficiency records (and perhaps Finals records as well.)

Chamberlain was, quite simply, the greatest two-way force in the history of the NBA...and INCLUDING the post-season.

In his prime seven years in the league, and covering 67 playoff games (35 of which were against Russell, and six more against Thurmond)...he AVERAGED...

30.4 ppg, 27.0 rpg, 4.5 apg, shot .515 from the field (in post-seasons that shot about .425 in that same span...or nearly 10 percentage points above the post-season league eFG% average), and likely 8 bpg. AVERAGED.

Now, go ahead and give me YOUR list of "GOATs" who averaged a 30-27-5-8, and shooting 10 percentage points above the post-season league average in their best 67 game span in their playoff career.

Hell, let's carry that even farther...give YOUR me list of "GOATs" that had even ONE SERIES in which they AVERAGED a 30-27-5-8 .515 (and again...10 percentage points above the post-season league eFG%.)

In fact, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a "GOAT" with even ONE GAME with a 30-27-5-8 stat-line, and at a staggering FG% efficiency.

Not only that, but Wilt DOMINATED at the DEFENSIVE end, as well.

How about this...

Wilt's post-season FG% allowed:
