Didn't see a thread on the FP.
Anthony Davis is one of the main reasons Alvin Gentry wanted to coach the New Orleans Pelicans. Gentry believes that Davis is the second-best player in the NBA, and is already building an offense that will play to the Pelicans center's strengths. New Orleans wants to make sure that Gentry will be able to coach Davis for a long time, which is why the Pelicans are determined to get their star center to sign an extension.
From The Times Picayune:
When free agency begins on Tuesday at 11:01 p.m. CT, the New Orleans Pelicans are expected to make a push to re-sign most of their own free agents.
''We like our team, we like the players on our roster and we look forward to competing with these guys,'' Pelicans general manager Dell Demps said last week. ''If an opportunity presented itself to improve the team, we'll look at it. We think we are going in the right direction.''
Other than making an assertive to push to sign star power forward Anthony Davis to a five-year extension that exceeds $143 million starting on July 1, the Pelicans next order of business is making a push to re-sign starting center Omer Asik.
This is not a surprising move by the Pelicans. Davis is the future of their franchise, and keeping him for as long as possible is in their best interests. Of course, Davis could also choose to sign a shorter extension so he could have some flexibility in free agency. Davis will have until October 31, basically right at the start of the 2015-2016 season, to sign his extension. The Pelicans are giving it to him months in advance though, so there shouldn't be a long drawn out process between the team and Davis.
