It wouldn't have made sense if they just showed the first part. People would be like "wtf did he do that for?"

We needed to see the guys motive.

It's Detroit and we get a lot of gang references, it would have been better if it left an air of mystery. And considering it was recorded in first person, which means we get to be the victim, it only makes sense not to know why just like the Vic.

I get what you are saying but I think that it would have been pretty incomplete had they just did the first part. Humanising the "bad guy" by showing his life and his POV only adds more layers to the story.
