Mitch on his re-signing:

"When Nick became a free agent in June, I expressed hope that we would be able to bring him back on a contract that was in the best interest of both the Lakers and himself, and I am proud to say we were able to do so

What makes you think that? Young was not reported to be in the trade for Hibbert..plus all they need to do to get Hibbert is dump Robert Sacre + Jabari Brown to free up that 2 mill to add to their 5 mill of remaining cap space this season.

They still have an MLE to use which they could use on Jordan Hill and Carlos Boozer

Hill and Ellington are free agents but they both played well in their stints in LA so I'm hoping the Lakers resign them using some combination of MLE + veteran's minimums. Robert Sacre + Jabari Brown likely have to be included in the trade to Indiana for Hibbert because Lakers only have 5 mill in cap space. They need 2 more mill to sign Lou Williams (7 mill)

I think Kobe can play SF. It'll allow him to go to the post more with two great 3pt shooters in Russell and Clarkson on the wings. Plus he'll be able to keep up with slower 3s in the league.

Yes we do...we didn't even trade for Hibbert yet. And even if we did, with the cap at 67m, we have 24m in cap space. Hibbert contract is 15.5m, leaving us with 8.5m cap space at least. A 21m contract over 3 years (depending on the % increase) starts at 7m or just under like 6.5m, we have no problem signing him.

After this pickup, I feel like we need a stretch 4 coming off the bench. Mirza Teletovic would be a good pick up, and make me a proud Bosnian Laker fan

On the real though, Boozer did really well for the Lakers off the bench. The only thing I'm afraid of is if Byron decides to start him over Randle. That would prohibit his development. Lots of young guys on this team. Booze is a good veteran big to have on this team for the minimum.

Yall keep saying this like it will happen. We are paper thin at SF to the point that Kobe will probably be starting there next season (part of the reason why I was so high on signing Tobias), Young is needed off the bench at the 3 unless we can find a quality replacement.

Booz sucks **** man, keep him away. We have a young PF in Randle who will be getting big minutes, we need a guy who can shoot 3's off the bench. A stretch 4 (off the bench) would be a good fit next to Hibbert, not boozer and his ugly shot.

His defence is screaming at the top of his lungs while you shoot an uncontested shot. Keep him away.

No, Randle need all the minutes there. Having Boozer out there will hinder his development because Boozer is still a good player and that means he will still get minutes, We need Randle to grow and learn from his mistakes and play through tough times.

Not the greatest, but he does well against quicker PG's. Usually will have to play him against smaller opponents all the time.

Hired gun in offense, he's pretty much a smaller Jamal Crawford. Should have big games for the Lakers.

Basically my comparison to Crawford. Because of his shot selection, he's going to have poor shooting numbers when it's playoff time. If Lou can't score, I don't see him making much of an impact on the court.

I feel like Lou is a worst version of Nick Young. At least Swaggy shoots decent respectable percentages from 2 and 3. But having both of them off the bench might be interesting to watch. Nick has said he's worked a lot on his off the ball game this offseason.

In all seriousness there is worse position to be in as an NBA team than to be mediocre. Either be a top contender or be awful. So now adding Hibbert and Williams the Lakers will win 31 games instead of 21 and get the 6th or 7th pick which will go to Philly. Super....

I hope it's something like:

1) Lakers package Robert Sacre + Jabari Brown + Nance Jr + future 2nd round pick to the Pacers for Hibbert. 7 mill remaining in cap space
2) Lakers sign Lou Williams (7 mill). 0 mill remaining in cap space
3) Lakers sign Brandon Bass for veteran's minimum.
4) Lakers resign Jordan Hill using MLE
5) Lakers resign Wayne Ellington using veteran's minimum
6) Lakers S&T Jeremy Lin to Dallas for a future draft pick

PG: D'Angelo Russell | Lou Williams
SG: Jordan Clarkson | Anthony Brown | Wayne Ellington
SF: Kobe Bryant | Nick Young | Ryan Kelly
PF: Julius Randle | Jordan Hill | Brandon Bass
C: Roy Hibbert | Robert Upshaw | Tarid Black

Kobe operates in the mid post creating for Russell/Clarkson/cutting Randle. Hibbert protects the paint, cleans up the boards and outlet passes to Russell/Clarkson/Randle to run the showtime fastbreak. Lou Williams + Nick Young come in and score 30 pts off the bench with Upshaw/Hill hustling the glass and Brown/Young draining 3s. With declines to Blazers, Clippers and Mavs, that's a playoff team in the West imo.

**** you talking about?

Last year they properly tanked.

This year it's top 3 protected and pretty much no matter who they signed, they'll be better than at least 3 teams in the East (probably more). Might as well win as many as possible to stick it to the Sixers.

That's the playoff picture out west in no particular order. I don't see the Lakers being better than any of those teams than you got the Suns and Jazz both probably gonna finish with a better record. I think lakers are going to be somewhere 10-15 out west. 76ers will get there pick probably somewhere in the 4-8 range.
Sixers draft could be scary next year they gunna have 2 picks that can potentially land in the top 5 and they got Heat and Thunder 1st rounders as well.

They aren't making the playoffs guys. They'll be competitive during the season. Give the rooks some burn, and add more pieces next year.

At this point I'm going to be rooting for them to spite the Sixers. I know full well they have no chance at all of even sniffing the playoffs, I just want these young guns to develop.

That's all I hope for. Compete. Show some grit, and primarily? I want those younger dudes to get burn. I'm not trying to watch Bass, and whoever playing more than dudes like Randle, Clarkson, and especially Russell. Regardless of how they're used, be it as assets or as players moving forward we need to see what they can do and let them get some experience while that happens.

The goal for this season should be to develop the young guys as much as possible Russell, Randle, Clarkson, Nance, Upshaw, Brown.

Bingo fvck Hinkie and his smug ass. Tankers don't deserve to be rewarded. I'd love to give the Sixers the #14 pick

Exactly. The only highlight of last season was seeing Clarkson make the jump from bricking that floater of his to actually becoming a solid player and ROTY candidate.

What I do know though is this team looks a hell of a lot better than last seasons.

Guys like Lin and Boozer are ehhhhhhhh.

I like the pickup of dudes like Lou, Bass and Hibbert to mix with the Lakers younger dudes and Kobe. I just hope all can stay healthy

This is all that matters at the end of the day. All I wanna see is our young guys develop, upset some Teams and at least crack 40 wins this year. Maybe next year someone will see our potential and max out here.

Again, what are the Lakers doing? Are they trying to make a push for the playoffs, because this team ain't gonna do it in the West.

If they're not good enough to make the playoffs and they win too many games that their percentage of getting a Top 3 pick goes into single digits then this season would be a waste.

The Lakers would have nothing to show at the end of next season except a receipt for Roy Hibbert's expiring contract.

Interesting. Don't know if it matters much, but it's something. Now just to trade Nick Young...

:kobe:

somebody is gone, most likely Young.. they have to create some space

Why do people want to sack Nick Young? Perfect spot up shooter type with iso skills to boot off the bench. Yes his contract is trash but he's a role player that we can use perfectly with the right pieces.

Man I can tell who are the ones who actually watched laker games this past year.

Nick Young was arguably the worst player in the entire NBA last year. If you want him back you're crazy.

The way I see it, Nick got his contract and then decided to f*ck around after that.

He won't if Kobe plays a full season.

they are building the show time Lakers,

without a full time Magic Johnson/Kareem Abdul Jabbar

you can't count on any player, not even Magic in my opinion, to continuously carry a team by playing the Center position as well as the PG

even with Lebron, this team still falls around the second round of the playoffs. this is after having a top 5 and a top 2 draft pick in consecutive years.

Is it just me, or does this contract seem really cheap ? With all the money that has been thrown around this offseason, $7M per year for the current 6th Man of the Year seems like a bargain.

It is especially with the cap exploding in 2016 and even more in 2017.

Excellent off-season, absolutely perfect.
Well done Jim & Mitch. I loved our pick to be completely honest. Randle hasn't sniffed a minute last year either. Two players that could completely change our perspective on our future; they both could be pretty darn good.

Ignoring our two young players; Hibbert is a win/win, IMO. This man might not average the same rebounds Ben Wallace, Dennis Rodman or Chris Paul but his defensive impact is elite. If people actually analyzed some of the more advance defensive stats, they'd know he's an asset to have at center. If he has a great year; we have the option of simply re-signing him. If he does not, than we free up cap space. Kobe is off the books (I will cry when he retires, by the way) and we signed Lou for an absolute bargain.

I actually think the FO made a pitch about next off-season to Lou; promising him a contender. I can quite easily see LA being one trade away or signing a Russell Westbrook or Kevin Durant from being where they were with Kobe/Pau in 2008; by the start of next season.

Best case scenario; we see a lot of spark and chemistry from Randle & Russell. Our other youth elevate their game and Hibbert has a strong defensive season. I doubt we're keeping our pick; so I hope we win enough games so we can throw both middle fingers toward Philly.

We are Kevin Durant and a couple of seasons away from being serious contenders, IMO.

Russell, Clarkson, Durant, Randle & Hibbert.
Of course, our future heavily depends on our young prospects. Which is the only thing I'll be watching this year; seeing them (hopefully) grow and become stars. I love what I saw from Clarkson last year; and I hope Randle & Russell become even (borderline) all-stars in this league. With a legit superstar, this team is as good as it gets in this current league.

Not to mention; a pretty deep bench. Love the Bass acquisition.
