I'm not saying he's not worth it, but who's bidding for Reggie Jackson? This opens the door for Brandon Jennings, who will be expiring next season, to be a trade asset to a team (say Houston) looking for a PG.

He's not close to worth that....and when you combine that with the fact that the Pistons had all the leverage...
Just terrible.

16 a year? He absolutely went on a tear after being traded to Detroit. It seems like it's the right system for him. I think in Van Gundy's system he'll play up to his contract.

There should be a documentary of this year's offseason focusing on the crazy amount of players who got overpaid. I mean c'mon! Reggie Jackson DOES NOT deserve $16m a year! :oldlol:

Uhm, who exactly drove his price up? Also considering the amount of teams with cap space and needed a PG upgrade at this stage of FA was very few.
Detroit didn't even use their leverage here at all. Reggie's a good player and a long-term deal was smart to secure, but I think they could have gotten him for even less. Cap's going up, so whatever, but the event that they wanted more future cap space, this deal kinda foils that.
Drummond is extension eligible this offseason right?

Obviously I don't love the deal, but that's the NBA market right now whether you like it or not. What drove his price up? The Goran Dragic and Brandon Knight deals, it's right inbetween them, that's the market man, it is what it is. They're rolling the dice on his potential and their ability to develop him into a star PG. In a couple years every NBA starter signed after the TV deal will be getting 16 Million a year or more, that's just how it goes.
All I can do is hope they are right about his potential. He certainly looked good with us once he found his bearings, averaging 17 PPG, 9 APG, 4.7 RPG after the All-Star break, 27 games. Hopefully he can continue where he left off and continue to improve under SVG's development.

Didn't we have a lockout because of shit like this?
We had a lockout because owners wanted a stricter salary cap to allow smaller market teams to compete, while on the other hand players wanted a bigger salary cap to increase their earning potential.
So no, this isn't the same.

That was pre-9/11, pre-Housing market crash, that would be like $10-12 mil easy in today's money. Slowly but surely the players are getting more of the owners share that they deserve.0

Westbrook will be making upwards of $30M per year when the cap hits $100M because he's been in the league between 7-9 and players in that circle can get max contracts up to 30% of the league salary cap.

What does 9/11 and the Market Crash have to do about an NBA salary? The only time the cap changes is when there's a complication with salaries between players and owners, mainly do to a large income coming into the league be it a TV Deal or whatever.

This is what was negotiated in the most recent CBA lockout in 2011. So barring another lockout and a change to occur in this graph, then a guy like Reggie Jackson in two years (when the salary cap jumps to $100M) could earn up to $20M from another team from a max contract, but because Detroit has his Bird Rights he would earn 7.5% more than that. So that's $21.5M Reggie Jackson could have had in the new CBA.
So if you're squeamish about his contract right now, then I couldn't imagine how you'd feel if you saw what he could have earned.
$21.5M vs. $16M
I'd take giving Reggie Jackson the $80M over 5 years now than giving him $107.5M over five years when the cap increases.

Not entirely pleased, but not entirely surprised either. As someone pointed out, Knight, Dragic, Carroll; just what you got to come up with the keep someone around.
Plus, I don't think they wanted any 1 year tender drama after Monroe.

1. If you don't understand anything about the NBA salary cap then just say it. New basketball fans tend to freakout about big contracts just because of the dollar amount, but don't understand that they are all getting paid a percentage of the salary cap a team has. Welcome to the NBA, where two decades ago Michael Jordan made $3M in a year, where one decade ago Shaquille O'Neal made $20M in a year, and where in two years Lebron James could make $35M in a year.
2. I did.

Jackson, 25, recorded two triple-doubles and had 23 points and 20 assists against Memphis on March 17.

Also contract is in line with what Knight got. I knew after Knight got 70 million, we were gonna have to shell out some cash for Jackson.
The cap is going up and we are gonna see more and more contracts like this or even worse the next couple seasons.

Reggie Jackson is an MLE player and a sixth man. At best. And he plays the NBA's most stacked position.
Remember when the Thunder lost a top 5 player because they weren't willing to shell out 15 mil a year for him? It's hilarious how big the NBA salary bubble has gotten in the last couple of years.
(I know Harden wasn't a top 5 player when he was in OKC but it was pretty obvious to anyone with eyes that he was going to be top 10 in his prime at least.)

I wonder what prime Mike James would get on the open market. Remember when he averaged 20/6?
At this point when I hear a guy got less than 60 mil I wonder what's wrong with him. What's JR Smith going to sign for?
DeuceWallaces
07-06-2015, 10:17 AM
MJ got over 6 on a mid-term deal in a tight cap era. You're a dumbass if you think JR will pull a contract anywhere near these deals; obviously a completely different scenario.
