Took $1.4M to join the Spurs rather than $12M to stay with the Pacers.

He has to be retarded. Just buy one of Scottie's rings for a couple hundred thous and call it a career.

Not only did he take a tremendous pay cut, but he also went from being a starter and having the option to sign with a contender and still be a starter (Cavs 3.8m offer, Love still injured) to FIGHTING with Diaw and Bonner to be a backup for LMA and Duncan. Although the Wiz may not be a contender, they offered him 5.8m to be a starter for a playoff bound team. What an idiot.

This is the type of shit that needs to be veto'd by the owners. Players lowering their salary like this takes away from competitiveness.

If a team like the lakers can clear assets and sign players without them having to adjust their worth, so be it. The reasons CAPs exist is to make it fair, if players are lowing their value to make it work there's no sense in having a max cap anyways.

Any NBA fan should be upset by this lowering pay to win bullshit.

if spurs can get away with playing timmy and tony 27ish minutes over the season, they should be really fine going into the playoffs. but they definitely need HCA this year. losing too many regular season games and then facing someone like the clippers away in the 1st round is just too tough to go through again.
its probably easier to to play timmy restricted minutes with aldrige, diaw and west in the mix. thing is: timmy has to play the 5 almost exclusively @ age 39... gonna be tough on him physically... that should be pops main worry...

if spurs can get away with playing timmy and tony 27ish minutes over the season, they should be really fine going into the playoffs. but they definitely need HCA this year. losing too many regular season games and then facing someone like the clippers away in the 1st round is just too tough to go through again.

I think Duncan drops to like 24 mpg this year.

Fantastic signing for the Spurs, and maybe the most extreme ring chasing I have ever seen. West took an 88% salary cut, and gave up a starting spot on a likely playoff team.

The Spurs team looks great:

Pop (GOAT coach)

Duncan (GOAT PF)
Aldridge (HoF PF)
Parker (HoF PG)
Ginobili (HoF SG)
Leonard (HoF SF)
West (Allstar PF)

A lot of the players are quite old though, so health will be their main challenge.

Aldridge (HoF PF)

:kobe:

If he keeps it up while being able to win some rings (even getting FMVP, who knows)... Then we can start talking about it... As of right now? Please

on a pure front court speculation

Diaw and Kawhi probably puts them over the edge of the 2014 Spain National team

Manu/Parker is a really good combination, but who else can come in to play in that back court

something tells me even Pop is concerned about the lack of dribble penetration between the end of the free throw line to the end of the court
where it creates a straight line as well as open shots for any big men who can run down the open lane (and when you have size/stregth/height/mobility, you are open)

you can't just do an open pass to get to that spot, because that's not where you want your big man to be, and not the open look you want them to get.

I agree that he's not there yet, but he is on track to make it, even without a ring. He just needs to have 2-3 more All-NBA seasons.

West is not a All Star anymore. He is literally 6 or 7 years removed from being one.

Ginobili is not anywhere close to a HOF player right now. You could make the argument he is just an average player.

Parker..... You have Spur fans saying Patty Mils is berrer than him now. Hes certainly not anywhere near a HOF player now.

What these guys are now is all that matters.

Pop is one of the smart coaches who manages player minutes and understands that the season is long and needs to be treated as such.

Adding West and Aldridge will allow Pop to rest up Gino and Parker even more throughout the year. I think they might look to add some guard help perhaps through trade, a third PG to take some more load off parker, ideally a combo guard to rest up Gino too.

Current performance is not the only thing that matters, experience is also very important when it comes to winning the championship, and noone has more of that than the Spurs.

I love the contract. An athlete that truly values winning a title over more millions.

As for the Spurs roster, it's got a solid beginning, but I'll wait to see how it ends up before I pass judgment. I'm concerned about their depth right now. Very concerned.

their depth is ok. They just need someone to backup Kawhi and a backup C.

Depth is not ok. I don't expect Manu or Duncan to be healthy for the full season. Then David West is getting up in age, so I don't expect him to be, either.

If they are all healthy, and all play every playoff game (assuming they make it.. stranger things have happened), then I love the team. But that concern is a big one until we see how they round out the roster.

The Warriors just won a title never facing an elimination game with none of their players having reached a Finals. Only Barbosa had made it past round 2.

That experience doesnt mean anything if you cant perform.

I agree. Spurs cannot go into the season with Duncan as the only center. He should only be playing 25-27 minutes/game. Too many PFs and not enough centers - LMA, West, Diaw, Bonner. Please do not re-sign Ayres. Is there any true center still out there?

Ayres, Kanter, Hill, Mohammed, Seraphin, Jason Smith.
They'd all be good for one reason or another. Mohammed is the worst option. Kanter is the best, but you won't get him for the money you can offer.

I think Jason Smith and Kevin Seraphin could be solid options. Smith in particular. Seems like a good-enough player, legit jump shot. I could see him fitting in nicely with the Spurs for 10-15 mpg.

Spurs should pick up Smith, Jimmer, and JRich. All on min contracts, of course.

This is exactly why I said that LMA is going to have to play center for roughly 15 minutes per game.

The Spurs going small would be a deadly offensive lineup and would destroy teams in the regular season. With Green/Leonard...the defense would be fine if LMA buys in and is willing to do it.

That is the best answer to be honest.

They will add another big of course, but the better lineup in terms of EV will be going small with LMA at center.

Time for LMA to man up...

This. I made a thread earlier this offseason about this. No sane person would give up 10.6 mill like that. I don't care how rich you are. If dude want's a championship ring so bad, buy one off of eBay. I hear Kobe's sold for less than 100k..

Its a one year deal, Spurs and West prob have a silent agreement that he will be re-upped next year on better money or something.
