By Bryann Flynn

Maurice "Mo" Williams is quick to remind me the wounds that take the longest to heal are rarely physical. "I've been under the knife, had contusions, could barely walk on my ankle..." His voice trails off, and he takes another bite of his lunch, then stares across the cafeteria at Murrah High School, into another time entirely. "It's the emotional betrayal that sticks with you. It eats at you. You just keep wondering, like, you know: why?"

Williams is back at the high school where he first made his name in Jackson, Mississippi to promote his annual "Mo' Fundies, No Problems" basketball camp. The premise of the camp is straightforward enough: if you master the basics, you're less prone to beating yourself. "That's half the battle, really." The charismatic shooting guard beams and for a second his boyish exuberance makes you forget he's actually a veteran NBA player now, and on the market for a new team. When the topic turns to free agency, it's difficult to avoid the topic of LeBron James.

"Could care less where he goes, man." When I express incredulity he puts one hand on his heart, and the other hand shoots skyward like a flare. "Honest to God! I just know wherever he ends up, I'll cross that team off my list." And with that he finishes the last bit of his lunch and hurries back to the gym. There are children to teach, and Williams is a loyal helper.

Later that evening, when we - at Williams' insistence - settle into dinner at Red Lobster [author's note: I was born and raised in Maine, so dining at Red Lobster is akin to an act against God] Williams, perhaps lulled into a state of comfort by the improbable number of biscuits he consumes, opens up about "The Decision." It wasn't that LeBron left, but rather how he left which will forever rub Williams wrong.

"Bron had me blinded man. He wins you over completely. He makes you feel like you're his best friend. He'll party with you, train with you, dance on the sideline with you... Look, growing up I was obsessed with the Thundercats. Bron found out and he had this artist make me a painting where it was me playing basketball, but I looked like Panthro. He would call me Panthro all the time, and I called him Lion-O. We used to joke about how Dwight (Howard, then their nemesis with the Orlando Magic) was Mumm-Ra." I ask Williams where that painting is now, and he crumbles his napkin and tosses it over his shoulder, then shrugs. "I couldn't get Bron to pick up my calls for a week after 'The Decision,' so finally I just sent him a text, I just said, Lion-O would never leave Panthro out in the cold. Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat. But that's how he is... That's who he is. He makes you feel like a million bucks and then steps over you like a bad penny on his way out the door."

We speak very little about LeBron, Williams' own free agency, or basketball at all for the remainder of the meal. Instead Williams talks at length about the peace of mind he finds whenever he returns to Jackson, about fishing on the Yazoo River, about his grandfather Muddy who was half Choctaw and taught Williams the value of personal spirituality and harmony with one's environment. He smiles broadly as he discusses his girlfriend LavQuintana's pregnancy, and the perspective on love he has achieved in the past few years. But when we part in the parking lot, he can't help but provide a final reflection on LeBron - one that I imagine his grandfather Muddy would have appreciated.

"A man lets you know who he is by how he treats others. D. Wade, Chris, Heat fans, they saw how Bron did me and the Cavs, so they shouldn't expect no sympathy from no one. You invite a vampire into your house, you gonna get bit. Simple as that."

They don't realize that being able to attract free agents is a part of your skillset and is factored in to your GOATNESS. This is why even though I'm a HUGE Laker fan, I gotta admit: LeBron James is at least 15 spots above Kobe on the GOAT list.

Let's see what they have now:
- 2 future HOFers in Irving and Love
- an all-star back-up PG in Williams who can drop 20 every game, but he'll be coming off the bench. Easily the top 6th man of the year candidate.
- TT and Mozgov with the inside defensive presence. They should be outrebounding teams every game with the way they played in the finals.
- Defensive stopper in Dellavedova.
- GOAT European coach

They are the best team in the Eastern conference and it's not even close. They'll even get first and second round byes next season since the East sucks so much.

I absolutely do not want to hear any excuses if they lose. NONE whatsoever. They are the team to beat in the NBA next season.

They are definitely the most talented team in the East but why would anyone use signing Mo Williams as your 6th man "stacked". He's been a 6th man pretty much the last 4 years. Were the Clippers, Trail Blazers, Timberwolves, and Bobcats all stacked too?

Mo put up a very respectable 14+/6+ in just 29 minutes per game last year. He can still play and is a really good compliment to Kyrie off the bench alongside Delly.

Nice pick-up.

So, here we are thus far...

PG: Kyrie Irving - Mo Williams - Matthew Dellavedova
SG: Iman Shumpert - ?
SF: LeBron James - ?
PF: Kevin Love - Tristan Thompson
C: Timofey Mozgov - Anderson Varejao

Still a couple of question marks and, as the days pass, I think it becomes more likely that JR re-signs. That really just leaves the backup SF role to fill. I'm starting to really hope Joe Johnson talks are re-visited.

You slot those two guys in (Johnson/Smith) and that is one hell of a team.

The details are sketchy. Windhorst reported the interest by both sides yesterday and then basically threw together pieces that would make the money work. He included Varejao in the trade. I have to think that with David West now off the table, Varejao isn't going anywhere (I was always skeptical that he would).

So, basically, we would have Joe Johnson and his massive contract coming in (most expensive contract in the league next season) and we'd use Haywood's $12 million expirer plus a combination of other pieces to make the money work.

Brooklyn wants out of that contract and they've made it clear. The biggest obstacle is figuring out some combination of contracts that could make it work. I would assume Sasha Kaun would be involved.

But, Marc Stein reported around 5 o'clock today that there was still a lot of interest from both sides. Your guess is as good as mine when it comes to what would be involved though.

And since when does Mo Williams equate to stacking  this guy is a has been, and even when he was relevant, he wasn't much to mention other than his 1 all-star year...and was selected as a replacement that yr due to Bosh. The overreaching on Mo is :wtf:

But becauseit involves Lebron :hammerhead:

Has been nothing. Dude is still lethal out there man. Essentially Mo is their what? 5, 6th best player?

I'm saying if they land Joe this team is crazy deep.

Lebron23

They get Joe Johnson and they have a lethal team that's far better than the Spurs and the Thunder man.

Spurs sound nice on paper but really their only youth are Aldridge and Leonard.

Thunder are up there but I don't even think they're as deep as Cleveland would be. They're ridiculously deep.

I mean if they get Joe do they even keep JR?!

Yes

JR will come off the bench.

They better get right with their defense...this was Miami's trademark during these two years and run

They played some good defense in the playoffs They just lack the offensive fire power in the NBA Finals. Outside LeBron, Mozgov, and Thompson. The rest of the Cavaliers struggled offensively.

That team is literally going to cruise through the eastern conference easier than the Heat did. Even Miami had more struggles than this Cavs team will. Wild shit man...
Honestly, the Cavs this year did better against the East than the Heat teams did, even sans Kyrie/Love. They got taken to 7 games in 2012 and 13... Twice in 2012 actually. But that's mostly because the Pacers/Celtics/Bulls teams were actually pretty good in those years.

I don't see why they would keep JR other than him not wanting to leave.

The Spurs may be aged, but they have a proven system with a well oiled machine... LMA ads to that, so does West. They are in serious need of a backup PG but even without, the Spurs are favs by a good margin even with the Joe Johnson acquisition.

Cleveland knows they are likely to meet come the a Finals, need the ammo to sustain the Spurs constant high output...all the Cavs have done so far is re-up their free agents for the most part, and that's minus a huge contributor in JR being signed. So far their additions are Mo Williams and possibly JJ off the bench in place of JR. They are slightly better, I actually think JR is a better fit but this deep/stacked talk is a bit of hyperbole so far

oh the horror

Gawd damn

I'd argue that Mo is BETTER than JR in terms of just being a smarter ball player for a team. But again that's my opinion. I've always liked Mo Williams

Yea, the Heat squad faced tougher opponents on the whole...Bulls and Pacers were serious contenders those couple yrs, and even the Celtics in 2010/11. Cleveland's run this year was basically the Bulls and Warriors, which I'm still unimpressed by the dubs and allowing a injury riddled team to take them to 6 games...embarrassing for labeling themselves a "great" team tbh

spurs have a fantastic rotation of bigs. That's no lie. West/Aldridge and throwing around Duncan at center is good times. But their wing rotation needs a bit of help. Losing Bellineli, Joseph and such will kind of hurt them a bit.

Also I'm sorry but Manu is ****ing useless at this point and Parker is ancient at this point to me. Haven't been too high on him these days.

I think clevelands rotation of big men can handle Spurs easily and they have a hell of a lot more snipers on that team. They're just so deep man :oldlol:

Are you really going to reference Corey Josephs as a factor :wtf: did he even play outside of garbage mins this past playoffs? Lol. You have a point with Bellinelli, but please retract on the Corey Joseph tip...he's up and coming, but not a missing piece to lessening the Spurs

The bigs matchup is certainly not even, you have 3 all-star to superstar players up front for the Spurs against Love, Moz/Varajaeo and an emerging TT. I gotta give the benefit to the Spurs here...hard to overlook the proven talent, even if aged (which seems to be a non-factor for TD and even David West).

Manu is iffy, agree there but he comes in spurts...and I don't discount him until he's just off come playoff time. Just 1yr ago he was the his all-star self. Tony Parker is the weakest link...that's why they need a back up, and pretty sure they land one.

I still give the Spurs the edge based off experience and having the right coach to take them their...Cavs are certainly not far behind, but the inexperience and lack of leadership outside of Lebron is telling. Now if the Cavs re-up JR and land JJ or Jamal, then it's going to be a REALLY good finals

I think TT and Mozgov can hold their own against the Spurs for sure. Love won't have any trouble defending West or LMA considering both those guys will be shooting mid range jumpers and not pounding the paint. I mean sure, they'll get some points, but they won't wear out Love which is the best way to beat Cleveland when Love is in the lineup. It's forced Blatt to have to take out Love in late game situations during the season. Mozgov and TT should be able to make TD work for his buckets. I'm still not 100% sold on the Spurs. I do see them as favorites in the West, but I can see them losing to either OKC, GSW, or Cleveland.

The biggest problem for OKC will be the Spurs, IMO.

Kanter is their starting center. He'll get eaten up by the Spurs bigs.

Who does he have to guard though? Old ass Duncan. and splitter is gone right?

Ibaka will be guarding LMA and West so I think they'll be fine

Duncan dropped like 20/10 against Deandre/BG in the playoffs :lol

Maybe they'll switch though and have Ibaka guard Duncan, and put Kanter on West/LMA.

Miller and Harris are still under contract, Jones will probably return, and I think Christmas will make the roster.

G: Kyrie Irving - Mo Williams - Matthew Dellavedova
SG: Iman Shumpert - Mike Miller - Joe Harris
SF: LeBron James - James Jones
PF: Kevin Love - Tristan Thompson - Rakeem Christmas
C: Timofey Mozgov - Anderson Varejao

Overall looking really nice, the only weakspot is backup SG/SF. I'm not sure I want JR coming back though, he can shoot, but he also makes too many stupid plays, and he's likely to want quite a bit of money. Also, I think Williams will be playing some minutes at SG, and Miller can play SF as well.

I think LeBron will get a lot more rest this season. If Kyrie and Love were healthy, the Cav would have won it all. This time, things will be a little different.

Right? Mo Williams has to be the biggest bitch in the NBA. Dude gets left high and dry by LeBron, cold shoulders him like a jilted ex-GF in the first game they play against each other, and then comes groveling back to play with LeBron for chump change at the first opportunity.

What a joke. :oldlol:

A fresh Lebron is a scary Lebron. I don't expect us to see video game Lebron numbers as I believe he wants to win as many championships as possible. he's at that age where the playoffs are where we will see those monster numbers.

2015-2016 numbers for Lebron will be 23 8 and 8 I believe on 49% shooting.

I love how everyone is just presuming that Love and Irving will be healthy down the playoff stretch next season. As if this season was an aberration for them. The better bet is to presume they won't be.

I think most people feel the Cavs had to play Kyrie more than usual due to PG depth. Mo Williams is still a knock down shooter who can handle a press unlike Delly.

Love is weird but I honestly think he will play 70 plus games next season. Tristan is an iron man and they have a unique small ball lineup with those 2.

Cavs look to be following the warriors with their defensive big depth. Anderson is still a very good rebounder and decent pick n roll player.

They need to address SF as I believe it benefits Lebron to have a guy that can spell him during the season so he can have all his energy for the playoffs.

Mo Williams didn't join a good team in 2009... The Cavs only won 45 games in 2008 and Mo turned them into a 66-win team, which is why he was an all-star that year.

Ultimately, if Lebron had bums in 2009 despite an the #3 defense and an all-star teammate, then the 90' Bulls were bums with the #19 defense and a far less-producing all-star across the board (Mo beat Pippen across the board - VORP, BPM, PER, WS/48, scoring, efficiency)
