I saw that one, you can watch it on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq2d_3b7mRU) for now. (the subject matter is more interesting than the doc itself though, pretty mediocre craftsmanship)

It's a curious case. One of the experts in the documentary summed it up pretty well: this guy is a clear cut dangerous deviant if you go by common sense, but if take the perspective of reasonable doubt in law it's also clear cut he shouldn't be convicted of conspiracy.

This guy went a little beyond just fantasizing. He was gathering information on his targeted victims, he was sharing hundreds of pictures of his wife and kid and the other women he targeted with his buddies online. He looked up his targets in the law enforcement database he had access to as a cop. Set up a meeting with one of them. And he was discussing his rape-kill-eat fantasies for many hours, every single night, at times throughout the day. He was completely obsessed with it.

In the end it's a very good thing he got caught for his other crimes, a guy like this shouldn't be a police officer and probably shouldn't have a wife a kid. He needs intensive therapy and it doesn't seem unlikely he would have snapped at some point. His 10 year sentence and conviction of conspiracy was overturned though, he only served 21 months for his other crimes (mostly in house arrest?) and is free now.
