Japanese culture is not the same as American culture. I can assure you, that in this girls entire life probably nobody in Japan has ever referred to her as being Japanese. She probably doesn't call herself Japanese.

It's just a cultural difference. Their idea of Japanese is ethnic, not civil. To them, Japan is the nation of Japanese people. Not people who live in Japan.

But she was also criticized by Asian media as being the most unattractive winner in pageant history. They have some weird standards
