Let me know when Phil takes an expansion franchise, and turns into a 3 time champion.

Riley bought his own groceries in Miami, and won with them. Multiple times. The personnel was already in place for every title Phil won.

As a coach, I have to go with Jackson.
But overall, considering their performances as GMs, as well; it's Riley.

Which career are you referring to?

As a player, Pat has 1 ring. Phil has 2.

As a coach, Pat has 5 rings. Phil has 11.

as a VP, Pat has 3 rings. Phil has been on the job 1 year, jury's out.

I'll go with the trend -

addendum: Riley's one of the best GM's ever. I'm not trolling him here.

There wont be a trend. Lets not forget Jackson is the GM of the Knicks:roll:

I think that considering everything I'd go with Riley... Great coach who did it at high level with different styles (showtime Lakers, defensive-minded Knicks, mixing it up with the Heat), great GM, won a whole lot too...

The man who won two rings as a player and 11 as a coach, Phil Jackson. Plus the dude has a cool nickname, The Zen Master. Oh and he has the highest winning percentage of any NBA coach.

Pat Riley... he pretty much set up Lebron for his 2 rings.

Both are overrated but Riley is better than PJax, in coaching and in being GM.

Is this a serious question?

2 championships as a player + 11 championships as a coach = possibly greatest career ever.

Did Phil Jackson receive a ring in '70? I thought he missed that season with an injury.

Pat is extremely versatile as a coach/GM. Going to 9 finals in the 1980s/1990s is a pretty hard feat to accomplish. He also helped the Knicks reach the 94 finals  but let John Starks shoot 2 for 18 in game 7 :facepalm instead of benching him.

Phil Jackson's triangle offense is legendary. The Bull three peat teams were very disciplined. I remember them playing lockdown defense in the playoffs while Jordan laid back at times to have his teammates get involved. The downside is Phil always had a luxury of a Jordan in the 90s when he was the best player in the game by a good amount. He had Shaq in 2000-2002 who was easily the top 2-3 players in 2002 and the best player in the game in 2000 and 2001. Throw in Kobe (lock for hall of fame, second greatest SG ever) and Scottie Pippen (Hall of Fame SF whose pretty much a LeBron lite).

Phil Jackson drafted Porzingis. Unless Porzingis turns out to be at least an all star, he doesn't strengthen his case as a GM.

For now, I think I personally would put it this way

As coaches?

Phil > Pat by a nose.

As GMs?

Too early to tell but Pat has done a great job with the Heat organization.
