Diving for loose balls, getting a hand in passing lanes for a deflection, being close enough to contest a shot, or sacrificing the body and taking a charge.

For years, they've been called intangibles.

The NBA is about to try to make them tangible.

All 67 games in the NBA summer league at Las Vegas will have so-called "hustle stats" officially tracked, a nod to the league's evolving reliance on analytics and all the things besides scoring that help decide the outcome of games. A trained crew will chart 2-pointers contested, 3-pointers contested, deflections, loose balls recovered and charges taken.

Seems we will be getting some new stats soon, what do you guys think ? Good thing, or too many stats already ?

Personally I like it, these are important aspects of the game, and the lack of stats has made it very difficult to compare players, or to hold bad players accountable.

i think the had a stat for charges and the best was speights
about contested shots i don't think it will show how good is someone on defence

Maybe not, but it will show who is the worst.

Obviously not at constests are equal, some are much better at it than others, but if you don't even contest the shot in the first place ...

More stats to make Westbrook look good.

Westbrook is the modern day MJ. Golden boy.

Seems like these will be as fudged as every other stat is.

Who got the rebound? Is that an assist? Was that a shot or a pass?

Good start, but that's still too few. Most of the top teams have been tracking these stats and more for years already. GSW and San Antonio are 2 teams that base their player acquisitions on stats that the league aren't even tracking yet.

Houston tracks EVERYTHING. Have been for years.

LMA said he was blown away with their analytics presentation.

In a 2012 chat on Reddit, the risk-taking Morey sounded up to the challenge:

"As only one team out of 30 gets to win, you cannot play it safe."

This is good. At first, the stat won't be refined but as the years go by, they will refine it further and it will be a better indicator of hustle.

One stat they didn't mention was tipping balls to a teammate when you aren't in position to grab a rebound but are able to physical touch the ball. That's the same thing as a steal, it's an extra possession. I do this in games and always get a chuckle when the guy who thought he had a rebound turn around to see what happened.

Great direction to head down towards IMO.
