View Full Version : The NBA should eliminate the stupid moratorium anyways.

As an NBA fan it's always been an annoyance. You hear for over a week all of the agreed to deals. Then you get another weak of hearing about those same deals now that they are officially official.
The NBA either needs to prevent these wink-wink deals by doing more than the 25k fine they put on Cuban, or they need to be smart and move back the start of free agency to draft night.
The DeAndre Jordan situation proves that the system is broken.
How is team supposed to proceed when they believe they have signed a top free agent?
Sometimes they need to clear cap space to even make the acquisition.
Obviously they get out of the market for talent at that position.
They sign players that want to play with and fit next to that player.
In some cases, guys might even take paycuts to play next to a player.
When a player can back out, they create chaos for that organization.
I'm not a Dallas fan, and I'm sure they'll recover, but imagine if a LeBron or Durant pulled a tactic like this.
The NBA needs to deal with this loophole before it blows up in their face.

You want to change something because of a rare occurrence that happens like once every 100 years?

I can see LeBron "agreeing" to a team just so they trade away assets to get him, and then going "Nah, your team isn't stacked enough for me anymore."

9/11 was also a rare once in a 100 years occurrence.
Why have a broke ass system in place?

The whole DeAndre fiasco was better then reality TV and so amusing.
I vote to keep the moratorium for entertainment reasons.

And 93 was the only time they were bombed.

Do you honestly think terrorist bombings and basketball are in any way compatible, or something that should be compared?

I'm not comparing them, but I think your logic for not fixing the problem sucks.

The NBA will do something. I saw a post where something like a letter of intent was mentioned, that would work. With the CBA as complicated as it is and the amount of juggling that goes on to get the numbers right you can't have athletes or teams just changing their minds because they have second thoughts. These are all big boys that know how the league works there's no need to have a time period for thinking about things after you said yes.

I think the NBA will reduce the length. PBT suggested a 3 day moratorium which I think would work just fine.

Or just change it to the day before announcement of the salary cap. 1 day and get it DONE!

The moratorium is there for the league to look at the books from the end of their year which is June 30th to set the cap for the next season. The easiest route is just start the free agency period after the league sets the cap that way everybody knows the actual numbers they are working with.
If a player needs time to think about his options then just don't agree to a deal until you're sure. You don't need to have some artificial time period built in for guys to change their minds.

You're saying there is a problem, but that is not a fact. It's an opinion.
