Imo, based on the all-defensive teams, some articles I've read, DWS, reputation, footage I've seen, DRtg (team and even individual), steals, blocks, h2h matchups...

1982 - Jack Sikma
1981 - Dennis Johnson
1980 - Dan Roundfield or Kareem
1979 - Kareem
1978 - Walton
1977 - Bobby Jones
1976 - Cowens
1975 - Hayes
1974 - Kareem
1973 - Hondo or Frazier, followed by Wilt
1972 - Wilt
1971 - Thurmond, followed by Frazier/Kareem/Gus
1970 - Reed followed by Gus Johnson
1969 - Russell
1968 - Wilt
1967 - Wilt
1958 'til 1966 - Russell

So, that would make...

Russell: 10
Wilt: 3
Kareem: 2 (or even 3)
Walton: 1
Bobby Jones: 1
Thurmond: 1
Reed: 1
DJ: 1
Hayes: 1
Cowens: 1
Roundfield: 1
Sikma: 1
Frazier/Hondo: 1 (one or the other)

For comparison sake, some actual winners after 1982...

Mutombo: 4
Big Ben: 4
Dwight: 3
Hakeem: 2
Moncrief: 2
Rodman: 2
Mourning: 2
Eaton: 2
KG: 1
D-Rob: 1
Jordan: 1
Cooper: 1
Payton: 1
Gasol: 1
Kawhi: 1
Artest: 1
Noah: 1
...

Ofc, that that only means so much... Gotta consider things such as direct competition, or simply messed up voting - for example, Duncan has 0 :facepalm

What's your take on it?

Think I've even responded on that thread, tbh... Probably made a few changes though.

OP. I have exposed you. You are a Celtics fan aren't you? You always go hard for Bird and this thread boosts Russell. Come on, you can admit it.

I'm originally from Seattle, actually, so...

Don't think I'm boosting Russell, just how it goes... He would've had like 2 handfuls of DPOY's, had it been awarded back then.
Who would you'd given it to in all of those years? Dude was racking up them DWS while his team was always the #1 defense, anchored by him, tremendous impact, as it is mostly known.

I think Kareem wins DPOY in 1976 over Cowens. Led the league in defensive rebounds, blocks, and put up astounding ON/OFF and DRtg numbers. He broke an NBA record for most defensive rebounds in a season and in a single game.

I dunno...

Kareem wasn't even named for the all-defensive 1st team above Cowens (not that you never had a DPOY not being all-defensive 1st, not that I don't even have a couple of players on my list there, that were all-defensive 2nd).
Tell you what though, those who voted certainly seen more games than you and me.

Cowens easily had better defensive teammates than Jabbar but can't deny that the Celtics were the 3rd best ranked defense while LA stood at 13th.
Dave anchored a top3 defense, Kareem not even top10, even when we consider everything else... Still a big gap.

Cowens also was 3rd in DWS and 8th in DRtg, which is very good.
He even finished 3rd in MVP voting without being close to the offensive player Kareem was.
Did his thing into the post-season too, just to paint a better picture.

I take into account rebounding when it comes to defense (for bigmen mostly) but not really that high up the list at all... Still, Cowens was 3rd in DRB% just below Jabbar (actually higher in TRB%).

Kareem clearly was the MVP that year though, definitely the best player in the league.
