Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

He is one of the Big Two of Nintendo along with Miyamoto Shigeru in the past decade. He was a programmer working on Balloon Fight and Earthbound before moved up to the president of the company in 2000. Game Cube, NDS and 3DS, Wii and Wii U are the products under his tenure.

Talk about coming out of nowhere, only 55 years old. Legend of the industry, he'll be missed.

Looking back, is Iwata era of Nintendo a success?

Gamecube was a failure only to rebound back big time with NDS Lite (original NDS was slow at first) and Wii. Then Wii U got crushed by competitors again (for now, because of Splatoon?).

I would say so, the DS and Wii were mammoth successes for them, and I personally consider the DS the best handheld ever made. While the gamecube struggled to compete against the ps2, it still did ok and has a solid library of games. 3DS has also sold very well. I'd really only consider the Wii-U a failure, even though I do enjoy it.

I always wanted to try out Iwata's new game, after he said "If I had the time, I would want to make games." Balloon fight was the greatest. I always boast about the fact that I got one of your business cards, "This is the guy who made Balloon fight!" Thank you for you good work.

RIP. But maybe now the company can change directions and this might be for the better of gaming.. Portable gaming? They need to get into console gaming. The Wii U is trash so was the Wii.

Still, Iwata's direction may be right after all.

They knew they couldn't fight against other two giants head on, so instead they tried to; concentrate on portable gaming i.e. Nintendo DS that ended up a big success at the end, and market their console to even wider demographics i.e. Wii that also ended up a big success.

Wii U is a very good console that came out too early and hasn't had good software that can be appealing to hardcore gamers and goes really well with til lately (Splatoon).
