Finally setting in that the Lakers won't be in contention for AT LEAST another decade. Probably a century.

Yeah just like they were in the mix for Lebron, Melo, Kevin Love and Aldridge. Hell we couldn't even sign Greg Monroe. Give it up. This team is going to struggle and Durant is not coming.

Durant has the chance to make way more money in OKC and already has good enough teammates to go deep into the playoffs and win it all. He'd be a fool to leave.

Logic isn't allowed here.

the media is always talking about the knicks and lakers and celtics being sacred ground. none of these young guys give a shit. you can live great anywhere you don't have to play in la or ny anymore, just like the rest of the job market you can make money anywhere. i mean, christ, for a couple of hundred mill build your own version of nyc. though i imagine the strip clubs suck in places like milwaukee

This. Things have changed, the draw of places like NYC and L.A. isn't what it once and it never will be again thanks to social media and the internet in general. Guys can get paid anywhere, they can market themselves anywhere, they can live anywhere in the offseason also. Aldridge has a home in L.A., didn't help bring him any closer to becoming a Laker.
Both the Knicks and the Lakers need to start winning games again before they will be free agent draws, its not enough anymore just to say "it's going to be ****ing awesome here in LA" as the Lakers found out with Aldridge.

Doubtful. Players can get more endorsement money if they play in big markets. The big shoe and garment companies give bonuses if players move to LA, Chicago or NY.

hasn't helped melo or CP3, two worst selling nike signature shoe athletes. lebron, kyrie and kd all outsell them, all play in small markets

This was maybe true in the 90s/early 2000s, but not really anymore.
I see more Durant endorsements than Carmelo. In the age where cable TV is not centralized and kids consume most of their content online, the need to be in a big market is not really a big deal any more.
Durant has a $300 million dollar sneaker deal from Nike. I don't think he really cares about having more endorsements, he has plenty as is.

You dont know what the Lakers really do in the FO. They were never really interested in Greg Monroe for what he was commanding. Kevin Love was always nothing more than rumours as well.

More money in OKC over a big market team? :oldlol:
The two players with the highest endorsement money annually play in Cleveland and OKC. The whole "you need to play in a big market to get paid" rhetoric is completely played out.
If you're good enough, you can get paid anywhere. Guys don't need to be in a certain environment, location or around certain people to market themselves anymore. If you're good enough, the money comes chasing after you.
I just can't see him leave. If everybody stays healthy they are contenders and now they have a coach that hopefully knows what he's doing.

You cant just use the two biggest superstars as your argument. Were talking about the OTHER players as well, the Mike Conleys, the Pau Gasols. These players wouldnt make the same money in endorsements and whatnot if they played on the Bucks compared to if they played in LA. You really think that Conley wouldn'tbe much more magnified if he came to play for the Lakers?

Damn..don't do em like that. They still think Kobe is a superstar...let them have this pathetic pipe dream.

And yet those guys are choosing to remain in smaller markets and are quite happy doing so. Marc Gasol chose to stay in Memphis, Aldridge chose the Spurs over the Lakers, pretty much everyone chose somewhere else over the Knicks, the allure of LA and NYC isn't the same what it once was, and it won't ever be again. The Lakers should always have an advantage, but guys just won't be beating down doors, much less taking lower salaries to play there.
The times are-a-changin as they say. Social media has become the great equalizer and a giant megaphone that players can use to market themselves around the world. It also doesn't hurt that the overall tax burden is far lower in some of these smaller markets, meaning guys keep a substantially higher amount of their money compared to being in LA and NYC.
Because of their history, I think the Lakers will always be able to get in the door with premium free agents like Aldridge, the big difference is that they can't close these guys out as easily anymore. Its not enough anymore to say "come to LA, it'll be ****ing awesome, you'll be famous and stuff."

i cant see him leaving to LA right now, La is just too far away at the moment for being a real contender even with Durant.
Durant has everything he needs for winning the chip in okc (ok, except the coach maybe).....
only circumstance i can imagine of why he would leave, would be the fact that he doenst feel like the first option anymore....on the other hand his stats are too impressive

Carmelo does a lot of magazine ads for luxury watches, yachts, etc. Durant would definitely increase his personal brand if he became a Laker, nobody gives a **** about OKC.
There's no way he'll sign with LA though, they're due for a rebuild.

I just can't see him leave. If everybody stays healthy they are contenders and now they have a coach that hopefully knows what he's doing.
this is a stretch...sure BillyD knows what he's doing in a college setting, but he's unproven and no one knows if he will be successful in the NBA.
this is where I feel the KD decision lies...at the foot for the coach. if BillyD does good and they go far (at least the WCF), he re-ups and remains in OKC. if BillyD doesnt fair well, then I can certainly see KD packing up and moving with a S&T to still get his 5yr max...especially if they are bounced by round 2 next year.
this was such a risky move by OKC in bringing him in as the coach...you have superstars on the end of their contracts and in their prime. they should have went after a proven name on the market IMO...Sloan, JVG, etc. hopefully it works out :confusedshrug:

They're in the mix alright but they have 0% chance of landing Durant.
