That's why you can't lose in the Finals - because someone can always say "that means you wouldn't make the Finals if you were in the other conference".

For example, take the 1989 Bulls - MJ led this would-be lottery team to the ECF, where they lost to the champion Bad Boys in 6 games.. Here's what we know for a fact - both MJ and Lebron led lottery teams to 6 games versus the champs (Lebron in 2015 and MJ in 1989).

But only MJ led that EXACT SAME TEAM to a championship - the Bulls 1989 roster was identical to their 1991 roster.

Without MJ's DPOY-level defense and 33/8/8 on 54% helping the Bulls to 47 wins and the 6 seed in 1989, the Bulls would've been lottery heading into the 1990 season, instead of ECF veterans and 1 season away from starting a 3-peat.
