I don't think he was the best player ever to play in the NBA. Definitely not.

However, after watching that documentary of his I can't think of a single athlete in the history of sports that carries himself better than Doctor J. A true statesmen of the game.

In a time when racism was still somewhat tolerated (a less PC world than today), he managed to have white people wanting their kids to grow up to be like him.

He fulfilled his obligations to the ABA in such an above and beyond manner (with his time, his effort, etc).

He spoke as eloquently as Obama, and had a perfect family that seemed like the black Kennedy's. I've never seen a superstar with the grace, confidence, and just natural ease he had. Cool as the other side of the pillow, while still not being apathetic or aloof.

The guy seemed a real role model.

Since then, we've have to deal with HIV Magic, Gambling Jordan, Insecure Baby Shaq, acne faced Durant backpacks, antisocial Kobe, dummy Dwight, boring Timmy, crazy KG, Check my Stats Bron, etc. Glad to see Curry is around to bring back some real class and values to the superstar role model spotlight.

Erving and Russell seem to be the two held in the highest regard by other players based on what I've read and seen. With MJ, he gets his props from past players, guys he played against, and the current generation (even kids still in high school; which to me is unfathomable considering when he last played). However, often it's like "Mike" this, or whatever, in their stories. Like they're talking about their brother. Basically as a peer not above them, but acknowledged as someone who was just better at what they all did. When I listen to or see other players talk about Erving and Russell, it's like they're talking about Jesus or Mother Teresa. For instance, watch the Open Court with Dr J. The amount of respect he gets... It's a rather stark contrast.

Probably an age thing and soon you will see the same for the 80s guys once these 60s and 70s greats all die. Just an observation tho.

What does Magic contracting HIV have to do with his class?

I thought Dr.J did a lot for the game and moved it forward. Was a true pioneer of the sport. Not sure how many players today can pull off that legendary reverse layup he had against the Lakers. Kobe had a nice interview where he talked about the flashy moves percolating from Dr J to MJ and then finally to him. It's like a cycle.

Doc was the epitome of class, on and off the court during his time with Philly. He is still one of our most revered athletes ever. No player, teammate or opposing player, talked negatively of the Doc. I don't why, but he still brings a tear to my eye when I see him. Maybe it's lost youth:lol

As great as he is and was, he is still underrated, in my opinion. To me, he won 3 titles, not 1 in 1983. His 2 other titles in the ABA was just as good as NBA titles in the PRE-MERGER ERA. After the merger, the quality of the reinforced NBA improved.

Those of you talking up Dr. J by shitting on Magic, Bird and MJ for their vices and faults do realize Dr. J was no saint, right? He did have a child out of wedlock while married to his first wife.

This is not to bring Doc down, as he's one of my favorite players of all time, but to give him props for the way he carried himself on and (for the most part) off the court by tearing down other players defeats your cause, especially when he was a flawed man just like the rest of them.

None of our favorite players are perfect human beings, no matter what you think. Growing up in the 80s, Bill Cosby was another brotha in the mold of Dr. J, and look what we've found out about him over the years.

That's why I don't put any celebrity on a pedestal. I learned long ago that they were human and made mistakes (often real stupid ones) just like the rest of us.

:wtf:

Curry is one of the most arrogant assholes in the game! Durant much better for the game. He goes and throws ****ing footballs around with random locals in OKC. Not to mention he has shown nothing but professionalism and his MVP speech was on point...YOU DA REAL MVP

I watched that documentary too. I learned a lot of things I didn't know. He was a superstar way before he got into the NBA. He was a legend in the streets (NYC) and went on to do great things in the ABA but those games were never televised. I don't know about class and values because I don't care about players personal lives that much. But I wouldn't put the Curry's in that category. They are an NBA family so they know the game of image.

Really Durant is the one who reminds me of Dr.J based on what I saw in both of their documentaries.

Not saying I don't agree with plenty of that but dude also went on record saying that his daughter was conceived due to her mother, at one point, having put braces on her teeth and thus not being able to give him head; he straight-up punched Bird while Barkley and Moses were holding LB from behind...
Nobody has a clean sheet like that.
