Was thinking about this today. JR probably other commitments or something. They'll get it done, no hurry at this point but his opting out is starting to look really stupid

J.R. Smith to meet with Cleveland Cavaliers this week, sort of regrets opting out

Do they even need him now that they have Mo Williams? He's basically a smaller and far less crazy version of JR Smith.

Hes probably been calling Lebron nonstop the last two weeks brown nosing and begging lebron to tell cleveland he wants them to give jr a contract.

Yes, the Cavs need him if they want to field a better team. I think that's really the point, here. Is JR Smith essential for the Cavs to compete for a title right now? No. Would his presence on the roster increase the odds of a championship run? Yes.
Mo Williams is now the backup PG, which I think he is very well suited for. He'll be able to come in and provide some of the things that Kyrie does so well and, because they're both such good shooters, I expect them to play together at times. You can never have enough floor spacers, regardless of who is taking care of the ball handling duties.
That brings us to JR Smith... another floor spacer who is an underrated playmaker and defender... except he does it as a legitimate SG with his size. Smith was actually very good for the Cavs until the losses of Love and Kyrie brought him out of his comfort zone and turned him from a 4th/5th option to a 2nd/3rd option.
Assuming that doesn't happen again and with a bit more depth now that we've signed Williams, have Varejao coming back and will eventually do something with the Haywood contract / trade exception, Smith's role will likely never be as high as it was in the 2015 Finals on this team again.
JR made a mistake by not picking up his option, but that's water under the bridge now. There are only three other teams in the NBA who have the remaining cap space to offer him more than he would have made with the Cavs by picking up his option -- Sixers, Blazers, Pacers.
It doesn't seem like any of the three have any interest, while both JR and the Cavs have publicly expressed that he should come back. He gives us much needed depth on the wing and is actually a really nice fit when he is not punching people in the face or forced into being a 2nd option.
He'll be re-signed, probably around the $6 million per year mark that he opted out of.

He's a good 3 points shooter. Cavs needs some additional 3 points shooter if they aren't going to resign Miller or Jones.
He played well in the playoffs until the NBA Finals.

Except Mo can actually dribble the ball and finish around the rim.

I heard he wanted a three year 24 million deal that the Cavs basically laughed at. Cleveland radio said they are prepared to offer him a one year deal. Its no big deal to me if we keep him. He is always either on or off, no in between with him and he is only effective with 2-3 good players on the court with him. I'm more concerned about retaining TT.

He's a jackshit player you won't miss... trust me on that. Disappears whenever it's a big game.

JR would come running back to the Knicks. Dude would have not opted out if he was still on the Knicks, partying his life away :facepalm

JR smith can't be trusted on a multi year deal

His only options are Portland or Philly if he wants a raise. Indy's cap space will vanish once they re-order transactions and sign Monta. 76ers would rather give mins to Stauskas/Roco/Thompson/others and JR isn't exactly a vet.
He'd make little sense on a rebuilding Portland team, too, I think. He's gonna have to take a 1-year deal for a slight pay cut most likely I think (as in $6M vs. $6.4M). Cavs signing Mo and the fact that nobody has given Delly a deal means they have leverage with both guys.

Can Cleveland even still sign JR to anything but the vet min or MMLE? They are so far over the cap already, and since JR opted out, he waived any Bird Rights he might have had, correct?

Only way they don't is if they renounced their rights to him, which I'm pretty sure they haven't. I think they used up part of the MMLE on Mo Williams, but some is left over in the event they want to give somebody above a min contract (perhaps another wing defender).

All JR did was opt out of his player option. The Cavs still own his Bird Rights, which means they can give him a max contract if they wanted to (of course they won't, just making a point).
Just a matter of time before he re-signs. He really had no other option, unless the Sixers or Blazers lose their minds and offer him a big contract or he goes somewhere else for less money than what the Cavs are offering. Like jbryan said, rumor is that his agent went to the Cavs and asked for three years, $24 million guaranteed and the Cavs told him to take a hike. I'm not sure what they could have been thinking.
JR will/should get 1-2 years worth around $6-7 million per year, tops.

Thanks. I know a little more than the basics of contracts, cap management, etc, just didn't realize that a player could opt out and have the team still retain his bird rights. Makes sense, though. Don't damage the team because of a stupid player.

He's coming back i believe. Probably at what they wanted to pay him or a lil less.
