View Full Version : Who is the next "most hated" player of the internet age?

Kobe (no explanation) to Lebron (ditto), then who? :confusedshrug:

Who is the next GOAT-level player to receive the same vitriol that Kobe and Lebron have/do?

Harden would be closest IMO, but he's not in the same league as Kobe/Lebron on either criteria (not good enough and not enough hate). After that, I have no idea.

Would Curry be a dark horse for the title? American culture usually builds a celebrity/sports star up to a point and then turns on them, sometimes viciously, for often ridiculous reasons. I could see people turn on Curry for some combination of his religious beliefs/increasing arrogance confidence/threat to their favorite players.

Or, will Kobe and Lebron stand alone as the most hated GOAT-level players ever? HM: Wilt (pre internet, socila media, 24-7 news cycle)

Thoughts?

Probably D'angelo. Already has that alpha Kobe aura to him and he's not even a superstar yet.

It'll be someone later on down the road. Nobody in today's league is good enough/polarizing enough to garner as much hate as LBJ/Kobe.

Maybe Westbrook if he leaves OKC and becomes a top 3 player in the league. Never gonna happen if he's playing under Durant's shadow his entire career tho.

Possibly Dwight, altho hes not "GOAT level." But few players are. I mean OP included Kobe and hes definitely not GOAT level.

Its never gonna happen regardless.

Difference is that Kobe's on-court play will always dwarf Russell in all likelihood, so he's not good enough to generate Kobe/Lebron heat.

Can't stand Kobe, but just stop it. Kobe is a top-10 player ever.

whoevers becomes the next great player, gets titled as being the next MJ, and has 24/7 news coverage about them.

We probably wont see that kind of generational type wing prospect for a long time.

I know once LBJ retires, ESPN will be desperate to find that next player they can hype up to be the next MJ.

McGrady
Melo
Dwight

Pretty much anyone who was hyped up as a future hall of famer but that proved to have significant holes in their games. Also players who have been shoved down peoples proverbial "throat".

The people who hate Kobe i think have come about moreso in the past few seasons where advanced stat geeks have begun to take over and hero ball became villified while beta team ball became celebrated and the standard of greatness. Which pretty much goes along with this generation anyway; not too many macho guys around anymore, this is a soft generation based on acceptance, equality, technology in favor of actual activity, and where nerds are cool. Hate this generation. Weak af

When he was the main guy on the Rockets
I thought everyone loved him still...

If we were counting college I'd say JJ Redick. He's liked in the NBA but in college people went after him bad. There was a piece about him where people were calling his family threatening to rape his handicapped sister. People went WAY too far.

It's easily Dwight Howard among "star players". I don't think I've ever run into anyone that likes him.

Blake Griffin is another guy I think everyone can agree is a f@g.

Theres other guys everyone hates but since their scrubs the reaction isn't as strong (matt barnes for instance).

This.

Also consider that Kobe & LeBron came straight out of high school, that irks a lot of people. Going to college for 1 year (as a superstar) breaks players in a way that Kobe/Bron never had to suffer.

If we're counting all sports, no athlete will ever be as universally disliked as A-Rod. At least LeBron & Kobe have a ton of stans, I've literally never met anyone who likes A-Rod

Gotta be between Dwight and Blake. CP3 would be on the list but he was super likeable on the (then) Hornets

If Durant comes back at full MVP form, dominates this upcoming year like the best player in the world, wins another MVP, loses in the playoffs, and then leaves OKC in the summer...he could come close.

People are sleeping on Durant when they say there aren't players good enough to ever garner that much hate. Durant in his MVP year was on the same tier as Lebron and prime Kobe. The thing that separates Lebron and Kobe from Durant at his best in terms of scrutiny is that Kobe is an asshole and Lebron is a primadonna + the decision.

Dwight has 0 fans. That's not even a hyperbole, he literally has...no...fans.

Nobody likes him especially on sites like this. I can't think of one Dwight supporter on here. Even CP3 has like 2 fans (myself and Hamtaro).

And you already know every single Laker and Magic fan hates his guts.

Dawg...I don't even think Rockets fans like Dwight.

Jackass LA fans already blowing smoke up our asses, and he hasn't seen a minute of burn. Watch those dogs turn right on him after 30 games.

I like Dwight. I don't understand what the deal is. (The Dwightmare maybe? It was stupid but I also see his POV, Magic team really started sliding and I can get over his mishandling of voicing trade requests..) Amazing defensive force and offensive weapon in his youth, he was clearly injured all throughout 2013 season but trying to play anyway and 2014 was an adjustment season (still a strong player and made playoffs).. 2015 playoffs showed where he's actually at in this later stage of his career (still an all-star type center and one of the pillars of the Rockets' plans)...

I like CP4 too. But CP4 like Bron is one of those guys who relies purely on skillerinstincts more than a playing strategy, so that's where the hate comes from..

And T-Mac haters? Jfc... people...
