View Full Version : Why is Thon Maker only projected to go 24th in the 2017 draft?

This kid has been on the radar since middle school, and has only gotten better since.

He's recently put on nearly 30 pounds of muscle (190 to 218), obviously he still has a LONG way to go in that department but he can get there.

His quickness and handles for a 7'1 player are like nothing I've seen before. Most of the time 7-foot-plus prodigies are slow and awkward, and you can immediately tell they are going nowhere. This guy is so far ahead of the game in the agility department.

Because whenever he's gone up against good competition he looks like Manute Bol out there.

He can't score and gets locked down vs better players (around his age)

Dude weighs 20 pounds more than prime Iverson

He simply isn't that good.

That jumpshot was probably a 1 in 7 or 8 shot he'd make.

And furthermore, what is the point of having a game like that when you're a big man? Play like a big man. You're tall, and the biggest help being near the ring.

I've seen the highlights of Thon vs. Skal from camp. Is the video skewed to make it look more even than it was?

They are obviously two different types of players but this highlight reel make it seem like at least a decent matchup:

24th isnt that bad for this guy considering hes average at best against elite competition at hisbage group.

Anyway if he does above average in college his stock will sky rocket.

mocks dont mean anything anyway. Cliff Alexander was mocked #2 two years ago

I'd be shocked if he ends up better than Channing Frye.

His whole game screams softness and too much complication. There is such thing as doing too much and taking away from your game.

Skal is better than this kid. He needs to play against good competition before we judge his potential.

You guys realize he was MVP at the Nbpa camp right? They only invite the top 100 players in the nation and he was he best. He does play against high competition and dominates

This guy will be KD on steroids

He'll be a top 3 pick.

Don't see a scenario where he doesn't go #1

yeah, #24 is insane.

thon maker will be a 40% three-point shooter in the NBA (or close enough, maybe 37%)... he doesn't just have a pure shot with perfect form, his comfort when jumpshooting is like a guard.

when watching prospects - a lot of times it's like "well, he won't be able to do that to like, al horford or other NBA comp"...

but with thon, he will absolutely be able to get that jumpshot off on al horford.. then he runs the floor like a guard and will be a rim protector..

#24? sounds ridiculous.. i think it's because he has no post game... who cares.. this is the era of 3-and-d... this guy is a better version of ryan anderson, with handle though, so a little like a Dirk (only without Dirk's ability to bang inside)..

his game is only a fraction of garnett's at same age.

garnett was a ridiculous beast though.

Unless Maker has improved his 3pt shooting dramatically in the last year, he will be a complete waste from that distance.

In his two high school seasons, and from a much shorter 3 pt line, he shot .313 from that distance (57/182.) I would suspect that he won't come close to 30% from an NBA distance. And if he can't shoot 30%, no coach is going to allow him to take that shot.

Secondly, his post game is a joke. He struggles to even catch the ball, much less do anything with it.

Because there will be 23 guys who will be better picks them him.

He's not that good. His name makes him sound better than he is.

Of course, the Sixers might take him in their first pic...which could be as high as #1 overall (whichever season that will be.)

You have to remember the kid has only been playing basketball for a few years..he was originally touted as a soccer talent when he was young and that was the game we wanted to play.. But the kid just grew too damn big.. Way to big to be successful at soccer... So he was pushed towards playing basketball.. Given how he has improved.. How his shot is already getting better.. How he is transforming his body already... He has insane agility and handles for someone his height.. And I mean off the charts... I would expect his improvement to be very significant and to be quite fast.. The kid is going to be one of the best bigs in the NBA one day... He will be a top 10 draft pick by the time he gets drafted as well
