Shows you how hard it is. Mike Powell, the world record holder for the long jump, failed pretty badly.

I think MJ could've done something like that. Conley's sole purpose was to try to jump from as far away from the basket without any style. MJ jumped from the FT line and double jumped and had his arms cocked back.

Ibaka jumped the farthest in an NBA dunk contest.

Common misconception... Most known Jordan's FT-line dunk is the one in 1988 when he had his foot on the line but if you go watch the 1985 contest, MJ jumped from roughly the same spot Ibaka did there, and with much more flair.

Tex Winter was so shocked by Wilt's dunking from the FT line that he headed a commission to ban such "freakish activity."

nba players can't match long jumpers in terms of jumping. period.

Isn't a lot easier to dunk from farther if your taller. Serge Ibaka like 6'10 with gogo gadget arms while Mike Conley Sr like 6 foot with much shorter arms.

True. But i think Ibaka has MJ by an inch or so further. But he's taller and longer so you could say MJ was more impressive.

Right on. Jordan was sans double pump in '85 but it was as far back as he ever went. I still think Ibaka was just a little bit further back than Jordan, but it's tough to tell with the Zapruder film screenshot (video of the dunk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlI1-C3_lVg#t=2m45s).

Sidenote, the dunk contest world was a little different back then, wasn't it? I think Jordan had to finish 10 dunks in 1985, and he still lost. Then he and Wilkins spent a large part of the next few years repeating a lot of dunks (Jordan went to the free throw line four times, including twice in '88 (with a miss to boot).

Umm, Mike Powell (the 2nd guy in the video) is still the world record holder in the long jump at over 29'.

Umm, Mike Powell (the 2nd guy in the video) is still the world record holder in the long jump at over 29'.I know zero about the comparison of long jumpers to NBA players, but strictly speaking on Powell's attempt, he had guts to try to pull off the free throw line dunk with a cuff. Would have been a legendary finish, particularly considering he's only 6'2''.

Separately, who's the shortest NBA player to ever officially dunk from the line? Is it just a bunch of guys 6'6'' and up? Sure I'm missing one here or there but unofficially I've got: Julius Erving, Michael Jordan, Brent Barry, Jonathan Bender, Dwight Howard, Serge Ibaka, Scottie Pippen, Josh Smith, and Gerald Wallace.
