some undrated players up here. i think its ok to focus now on rebuild. next year Dirk can opt out, same goes for chandler and d.will (??). so its likley that dallas will tank the 2016/2017 season? at least its an option if we wont attract any top FA next year(what im expectiong tough)

But it seems to me...that this year would have been the year to do that. Given the injuries to Wes and Chandler...and the rest of the roster. Winning like 25 games would have been very easy.
What is the point of pushing for a playoff spot with this roster as you rightly point out that this roster won't look anything like it does next year regardless of result. We could easily lose both Deron and Parsons...and Dirk might retire.
We could have signed all these young guys and let Wes/Parsons get right...while limiting Dirk's minutes. Played all these young guys tons of minutes to get them experience and see what they have...kept our pick...then hit free agency next year to see if we couldn't get Parsons to opt in and Dirk to opt out (and then come back)...all while adding a top 5 pick likely.
I guess I just don't see the point in doing all this when best case scenario is a first round playoff loss. While the best case scenario the other way is getting a franchise changing player.
It's just a terrible risk/reward analysis by the Mavs here imo.
Also, there is a real chance that Parsons opts out and walks. We have really set up the perfect situation for that to happen. Parsons will now put up very good numbers as he'll be the focal point of our offense. Something like
20/6/5 is certainly possible.
If that is the case...someone will offer him at or near his max. So then it's lose/lose for us. Keep him and we have to grossly overpay him...lose him and we would have decimated our team for essentially nothing. I've tried explaining this for over a year now on why that contract was so bad on so many levels.
I don't know though....just seems about as obvious as possible that the chance at a franchise changing player is clearly worth more than being first round fodder at best going the other way.
We'll see what happens....my guess is that Cuban/Nellie Jr. continue to do a terrible job just like they've done since the summer of 2003...give or take a few signings and moves. Just seems like more of the same.

of course it would be better to give those young players tons of minutes, resting Dirk (like 18min a game and no b2b2) and letting matthews and parsons recover complelty. so we would have a good pick and could attract FA who would rethink their decision about the mavs with Parsons, D.WIll and a top pick.
but unfortunatelly the mavs FO doesnt think in a logical way at all. so no conclusion is wondering me.
liek you said, we basically will give parsons the chance to put up good stats so that he can opt out and take the max at a contender.... poor dirk and mavs

Yep.
It's gonna be hilarious when Parsons takes a near max with the Lakers or something next season and we get back a trade exception for some nonsense after we created the perfect circumstance for Parsons to put up 20/5/5 and inflate his value in the league.
