Keeping in mind that your team can balance out your weakness, which one would you rather be?

Defensive liability without hesitation.

If your teammates can back you up and are far better defensive team, then you can focus on your best.

With today's rules, it is better to be a defensive liability than offensive liability.
With today's rules, teams will just leave you open and your team's best player will feel more pressure on the offensive end.

before the rule change, it was okay to be a offensive liability if you were good defensively because the rules forced the other team to guard you even if you were a bad offensive player. This is one of the prime reasons stretch 4s are so important now.

In the NBA on a winning team it is more valuable to have a defensive player that is an offensive liability rather than the other way around, most of the time.

Defensive liability.

I rather be a defensive liability. You are going to get paid in the NBA by just scoring, and putting up sexy stats.

Al Jefferson or Enes Kanter vs Ben Wallace or Rodman? Hmmmmm I wonder...

It's not as if Tyson Chandler who is an offensive liability is not getting paid nowadays.

You can't compare two of the best defenders ever to Al Jefferson or Kanter.

You'd have to go with a guy like Steve Nash or Magic vs Wallace/Rodman to make it fair.

Kanter just signed a 4/70M deal. Monetarily, there is no argument. Front offices still reward offense far too much. As do fans.

But if I am molding a team I would MUCH rather have an elite defensive player and hopefully we can develop a single useful offensive skill (shooting 3s from the corner, setting picks). If someone can't/won't play defense you just can't win in today's league. Its too easy for teams to put your weak link on an island and embarrass them.

Personally, I'd rather be a defensive liability, but depends on the position imo. for forwards and big men, I'd rather them be an offensive liability, as shot blocking, clogging the lane, and man-to-man defense are important for the team to be strong defensively, for guards (which I'm more of) I'd rather be a defensive liability, as their shooting and playmaking is probably more important in the grand scheme. None the less, the best players often (but not always) have a good combination of the two, Jordan, Kareem, Duncan, Lebron, etc,, and most players are not completely one-dimensional. Even Bowen and Wallace could get buckets and even Dirk and Nash could get blocks/steals at times

All NBA players make more than enough money to live comfortably for the rest of their lives. To me, it's a question of respect.

Defensive specialists generally make the NBA due to sheer hard work, will power, guts, grit, determination, sacrifice, and never quit attitude. Hard not to respect guys who are willing to give everything they have to entertain us, which is ultimately what sports is.

Offense but no defense guys are generally seen as skating by on their talent alone. If you are an elite NBA scorer, I don't care who you are, you have the physical tools and basketball IQ to be at least a serviceable defender. It boils down to not too selfish to help your teammates and not just being there to "get yours" on the offensive end. In rec ball all the way up to the pros, I can't stand dudes who do jack sh!t on the defensive end and then demand the ball on the "fun side" of the court.

Case in point: James Harden drives me nuts. I'd rather be Rudy Gobert any day.

You're right I can't. But I don't think even Nash and Magic were as bad on defense as Big Ben and Rodman were on offense. I think Magic had like a 3 steals a game in a few yrs. I know for sure, that I'd rather have Gobert than Kanter, even for a team like the Thunder who were badly in need of low-post offense for the longest. Gobert + Ibaka would be tough down low.

I'd rather be known for my defense than offense. You get more all-around respect from knowledgeable owners, coaches, players and fans.

Good "D" always prevails. Shooters get hot and cold. NBA elementary 101.

Small guy - Defensive Liability

Monetary reasons.

Exactly man, if those 90s Knicks taught me anything...it's that defense is more consistent than offense. If you have a great defense, it will keep you in games. If the greatest player of all time wasn't in their way, Knicks probably have at least 2 championships with Ewing and a ragtag group of untalented guys and hard-nosed defense.

Nick Young and Lou Williams in O are not remotelly close to Tony Allen in D.
Beverley is overrated in D.

Basically Magic/Barkley vs Rodman/Wallace

Offensive liability. I would get more praise from 'true fans' of the game, and it's more alpha to stop a star than to score on a scrub.

Damn I remember this guy two years ago said he'd return in August 2015 from a missinoary trip. He had lots of threads about superstars performances in elination games, I believe. he did what he said he would do.

I've always taken pride on playing solid D and never liked it when I got scored on so I would rather be an offensive liability. Defense is effort and desire. I never want to be known as the guy who doesn't try. Besides, if you are a defensive liability, that probably means you lack some level of athleticism.

being an offensive liability hurts a team more when it comes to playoff time than being a defensive liability.

We saw in this playoff years with guys like tony allen and andrew bogut. when you cant score teams are able to sag off of you and double/triple the team's star player and completely destroy a team's offense.

defensive liabilities atleast have a chance to be covered and hidden with smart defensive schemes.

Nash

Depends on what position I play.

Center = Offensive liability - think Chandler, Drummond etc who got paid. Rim protectors is the shit in todays NBA

PF = Defensive liability - think Kanter/Jefferson/Monroe etc etc

SF = Offensive liability - think Ariza, Igoudala, good 3 and D guy, a lot of superstar SF's in the league that need to be defended

SG = Defensive liability - think Monta Ellis, Crawford etc. SG's need to shot and score. Simple.

PG = Defensive liability - obviously, there is no place for defensive PG's in our league. Just look at guys like Delly, Beverley etc. They don't get paid and their teams just want them to sit on the bench even though they do really well on D.
