View Full Version : Strange that Kareem never had a nickname?

Hey Yo
07-29-2015, 07:27 PM
It's odd he never had one throughout his career.

Even stranger though that Earvin Johnson still refers to himself as "Magic" at age 55. You would think he would have grown out of that by now.

You never hear Dominique call himself "human highlight reel"

or

Bird referring to himself as "hick"

Some teammates still call him Cap to this day, even...

He also had "Murdock" because of his role in Airplane.

Hick? I've heard him called that before, but Bird's real nickname is Larry Legend. How do you not know that or Kareem's nickname? :biggums:

It's like Babe Ruth. When's the last time anyone called him George Ruth? The nickname becomes the identity.

Most nicknames are derived at a NBA young age. Kareem was never givin one until after Airplane.

No reporter or interviewer said "let me ask you, Legend."...especially not today at his age.

That is not what you said, originally. You said, "he never had one throughout his career." It was simply shown that you were wrong.

I do agree that it is odd that Magic fully adopted the "Magic" nickname.

Kareem was generally known in league circles as "Shrimpy" bc of the glaring lack of a bulge in his tight gold shorts despite a height of nearly 7 feet.

I don't know if this was a nickname, but in these Bucks highlight videos he is referred to as "King Lew" and the "King". That may even go back to UCLA, not sure though.

LOL @ leaving out LeBron.

Baylor was "Mr. Inside"

Moses "Chairman of the Boards"

Dirk has a lot of ones from Mavs fans, IDK if any have gone mainstream. I have heard "Dirkules", "Dirk Diggler", amongst others I can't remember

Apparently, Stockton's was "Stock" (b-ball ref lists nicknames for many players)

Mikan's was "Mr. Basketball"

Pettit was called "Big Blue" and "The Bombardier from Baton Rouge"

Pippen's is "Pip" obviously

One of my friend is named Steven but everybody including himself calls him Tony.

Penny's is pretty different. He grew up being called that by his family, thus to him it has always been his name essentially (kind of like Mugsy). He didn't adopt it as an adult.

Didn't Penny's grandma call him "pretty" as a kid, and someone mistook it as "Penny" and it stuck?

Same thing happened with Pernell Whitaker. His boys called him Pete. So as a youngster his home crowd would cheer "Sweet Pete"

some newspaper writer thought they were calling him "Sweet Pea" and thus was known as Sweet Pea for his hall of fame career.

Ok, the OP may have been mistaken, but here's something that Kareem really never got: An ASG MVP.
Yes, it doesn't mean much, but it's still unexpected and maybe frustrating for the all-time All Star apearances leader and once the all-time ASG leading scorer, who had had multiple remarkable such games not to have won the award just once.

Hey Yo

"The Captain" or "Cap" how do you not know this!?
Because it's not a basketball reference. It was due to the movie. That what the premise of the thread was to be about.(BB reference)

Besides, it was probably used more in local home broadcasts than nationally. Probably why I never picked up on it.

Wilt only won one (in his rookie season), BUT, how in the hell did he NOT win it in the '62 ASG???

Without question, the greatest ASG ever played.

In 37 minutes...

42 points, on 17-23 FG/FGA, with 24 rebounds. BTW, Chamberlain shot .739 from the field in that game...everyone else combined... .408.

Stupid thread. Kareem's nickname was CAP because he was the Captain of the team.
