Lets say you woke up tomorrow morning and you had this new found power. The ability to stop whoever you are guarding. I'm talking complete shut down. Question is, how do you make it to the NBA? D-League try outs? College? RUCKER PARK? This means you still have your basic ass offensive game and what not.
Anybody could make it with this power. If everybody you ever guarded went 0/0/0/0/0, you would have an amazing reputation that would build no matter where you started. There are already guys in the NBA that are defensive specialists that contribute essentially nothing on offense, yet they are no where near that good at D.
I'd go straight to d-league tryouts. Completely shut down their PG and then their 7 footer.
After 2 practices I'd have a contract in the NBA.

Do I magically gain the athleticism to play 40+ NBA minutes?
If not I'd start at the gym lol.

since i would be fast enough to cover anyone on defense does that speed atleast translate to my offense? cause on offense i wouldn't be able to dribble or pass without getting it stolen at my basic speed. also i wouldn't be able to shoot since im only 5'10.
i would be such a liability on offense, but is shutting down the other teams best player every single game worth that liability?
yeah i guess if i just never touch the ball on offense.

a) take a college/university course
b) try out for the team
c) lead the country in defensive statistics
d) get drafted #1 overall with a ridiculous 20 steals/ 15 blocks per game average

It is a magical ability, so it doesn't matter how tired you are, you would still be shutting them down. The OP says nothing about shutting them down as long as you are fresh. I imagine the coach would only sit you if your team is winning by enough to reward you with a break, or if your offense is sufficient enough that the coach decides to re-energize you for the side you do not have a magical ability for.

It would be absolutely worth it to the coach. Take Warriors vs Cavs for example. If you were on the Warriors, Kerr would have you guard LeBron. Even if you did nothing, it would essentially become the Warriors best 4 versus the Cavs best 4 excluding LeBron. It would be a slaughter in your team's favor.

The OP says nothing about you getting good stats. You just stop the other guy from doing anything productive at all.

You could be Peter Dinklage size and if you shut down everyone to 0 points always every time you'd have a max contract.
