View Full Version : Why did the Charlotte Hornets trade Alonzo Mourning in 1995?

How do you trade a dominant big man in the middle of the most competitive big man period in NBA history? This wasn't the old broken down role player Mourning; he was a beast in those days, averaging 21-10-3 blocks and protecting the basket like (a poor man's) Bill Russell.

I know there was friction with teammate Larry Johnson, but why trade Morning of the two? Did the Hornets really think that Johnson was better? :oldlol: (Who they subsequently traded as well a year later).

I'll answer your question with another question:

Why did they trade Kobe Bryant for Vlade Divac?

Because Kobe wouldn't play for them.

Didn't they end up trading both of them because they were both such a pain in the ass?

in hindsight the kidney disease made alonzo garbage later on. he never lead miami to anything. piggy backed a title team in 06

while for the hornets

trading him for rice

then rice for eddie

then losing eddie for nothing

= the hornets sucking enough to move to new orleans after losing fans

which = becoming the pelicans and having the best future superstar in anthony davis that has GOAT potential written all over him

which also in turn = the bobcats changing back to the hornets and instantly gaining more credibility and making michael jordan more money by attracting more sponsorship and free agents due to a fresh start and classic franchise brand

which ultimately helped out mike/the city of charlotte/ the city of new orleans/ and completely changed the outlook of the next 100 years

LJ and Zo hated each other.

LJ averaged like 20/10/4 in his first couple of seasons... Which is basically what Zo averaged.

They chose LJ, who was a Barkley-esque kind of guy. :confusedshrug:

I assume they thought finding a solid big would be easy since the league was loaded back then.

They got Glen Rice, Geiger, and a first round pick... Then Vlade the next year.

LJ's back and Zo's kidneys were both flukey things.

Regardless, they got rid of LJ a year after Zo anyway.

It's hilarious when you try to get that moronic brain to attempt to compute some kind of basketball knowledge...don't bother. Nobody cares either way bro. We all know you're an idiot. Reading your post sober literally gave me a headache and made me have to light up a fatty.

No, they just didn't want to pay Mourning and accepted a solid trade for him.

Without reading the article I think I remember the consensus being that they were going to build around LJ.

LJ is kind of a lost talent, because of that back. He was never the same again.
Very cool guy also. Grandmama was hilarious.
