Assists:

1. John Stockton* 15806
2. Jason Kidd 12091
3. Steve Nash 10335
4. Mark Jackson 10334
5. Magic Johnson* 10141

Steals:

1. John Stockton* 3265
2. Jason Kidd 2684
3. Michael Jordan* 2514
4. Gary Payton* 2445
5. Maurice Cheeks

It seems like these are probably 2x records that will never be beaten. Or at least for the next 10 years.

Dangelo Russell has a shot. Many people are saying he has the best vision since Magic so I say if he has a solid team around him for most of his career he's got a real shot.

It depends on which system a player plays in. For example, it would obviously be a lot harder to stack up assists on a 3point shooting team, simply because while overall 3 pointers may be more efficient, they are less in quantity

Pretty doubtful. Even someone with good longevity and really good early season APG numbers (Andre Miller) isn't even close. I don't think that one will ever be beaten.

How many PGs these days are even ball dominant enough to rack up tons of assists? Chris Paul, John Wall and who else? Rondo has the volume but he's too far behind.

Even then. Stockton has 8 seasons of over 1000 assists. Paul, Rondo, Wall have none

Probably not for a long long time...too many PGs wanna be shooting guards nowadays.

Maybe Rondo if he stays healthy and plays into his late 30's.

The last 4 years the NBA leader in asst has had ~718 asst/yr. It would take 24 years at that level to clear Stockton. The game is different now and the asst totals aren't as swollen as they once were.

He lead the league in assists for 9 straight years. And he played 82 games in 16 years of his career.

The simple answer is no. No one will have that durability + assists to accomplish it. In order for guys to achieve it would be to average at least 13-14 assists for at least 4 years (and play all 82 games in those seasons) just to have a shot. Most point guards don't even play 16 years in the league, much less playing all 82 in those years.

if anybody gets to play with the best PF in the league for 50 years straight then yeah maybe

Just a different era. Same goes for every other sport.

I doubt anyone is breaking Emmitt Smith's record any time soon, both yards and touchdowns.

And not only will no one break Cy Young's record, but I'm not sure we'll see another 300 game winner ever.

Years from now we'll probably we saying how no one will break Steph's 3pt record or something like that.

The fact that Kidd and Nash aren't even close to the record tells me all I need to know.

Steals might happen. Stockton is only 7th all time in average spg. CP3 has a higher spg average for his career. Problem is CP3 will need to play until his late 30s and keep that average up. The longevity part is impressive.

It is crazy to think that Nash was a 2x pass first MVP who was in the least until he was nearly 40 only had 2/3 of the assists as Stockton.

Not going to happen. He has been in the league for 9 seasons already and isn't even 1/3 of the way to Stockton.

Not all records. The NBA could die before some records break. Even if these records get broken, the NBA won't last forever which means inherently each record will become permanently sealed at some point.

Also, minutes played per game will be really hard to beat.

Wilt: 45.8

AI is the last person to average over 40 (41.1). Only 5 players in history have averaged 40 or more minutes. Extremely hard to beat.

It#s possible because Player come in younger than John did. but you have to be a top 5 passer of alltime and Play in a System that allows you to get 10-15 assists every year, which is highly unlikeable how the game is played today (more sharing, more ballmovement, playmaking at every Position)

GreggPopazit
08-04-2015, 02:03 PM
If Magic had not been forced to retire, it would have been his record by a mile.

He could have done it, but lets say he played the 4 years he sat between his 1st retirement and his return for the 95-96 season while averaging 900 assists per year. That would give him 4500 on top of his 14641, and still 1165 away from Kidd. Magic never had the insane health that Stockton had, even before HIV, so who knows what his longevity would have been. If he played at a high level without significant injury until 40, then yes, he would have had it by a mile, but we don't know that would have happened, so we can't act like being forced to retire due to HIV is the only thing that stopped him.

John Stockton's All Time Assist Record has reached the point of untouchable as of now. There has to be some major stylistic evolutions and rule changes for a future player to even sniff this record.

Even crazier to think that those 22 games came in two stints: a four game absence early in his career and offseason knee surgery which caused him to miss the first 18 games of the 97/98 season.

That's it. Other than those two spells, dude never missed a game in 19 years of NBA basketball.

That's insane.

Huh. Makes you wonder, who has the games played record? Minutes played?

Stock was ****ing amazing. Could have probably played another year or two with limited minutes. He hung them up when he felt like it. Boss.

I think John Stockton's all-time assists and steals records will both never be broken.

I also think Jordan's 10-consecutive Scoring Titles will never be broken (he won 7, and then 3). I consider that 10-in-a-row because it was 10 consecutive years that he was in the NBA.

His longevity, dependability, and consistency was one of those perfect situations that seems almost impossible to repeat. What are the chances that someone as good, is on a team as good, with a great system for assists, for that long, without missing time and staying consistent?

Low.

That's insane.Gary Payton is another guy who rarely missed any games - only 27 missed games in his whole career. And 14 of those came in his last season. Crazy.

Low.

Everything you said, then add in the odds of the above person having their #1 scoring option have the same unreal levels of longevity and durability. As impressive as Stockton's durability is, Malone's was arguably better. 18 seasons with Stock and the Jazz, 8 total games missed.

Odds get even lower that the perfect storm will come together again to allow someone to truly challenge this record.

The way point guards play now is not conducive to those high assist totals.

Minutes played?

It's pretty amazing that Utah's two best players were such iron men. Karl Malone is second in minutes played and fourth in total games.

Someone may break the steals record. Just a matter of time. The assists are pretty insane though. I don't think it'll be broken anytime soon. Maybe within the next couple decades, the league has a shift towards being face-paced again and guards start racking up 12-14 APG because of it like Johnson, Stockton, and Price...But even then, they'd have to be incredibly durable...

What's the possiblity of a player with Stockton's abilities to find himself playing alongside a guy like Karl, who is 2nd All-time scorer, 6th All-time rebounder and 10th All-time in steals????
I says veeeery close to zero

They are, as a whole (or on average) , more talented. But I feel that the NBA is not as top heavy as it was, say, 10-15 years ago
