View Full Version : Why are triple doubles regarded so highly??

A good alround game to me is someone who is just as good on the defensive end and he is on the defensive end. Realistically you dont have to be a good defensive player to get triple doubles and every time somebody does get a triple double people always say "good alround game" or "great alround player"
Defense is something that doesnt always show up on the stat sheet. U can have 5 perfectly good blocks in a game and they could jist be a matter of shorter dudes taking dumb shots infront of you....
So if triple dubs dont exactly mean a good alround game why are they some great achievement? Im not against them. They are definitely an achievement. But people act like theyre some amazing thing

Because you're on court with 9 other professional ball players. Getting at least 10 in any category aside from scoring can be a challenge.
Imo.

What's the win % for the team with a player achieving a triple-double?

Because it's f*cking hard to do.

It's a pointless and arbitrary benchmark that casual fans use to signify a good game.

because at casual glance, a triple double seems to signify you had your finger prints on a major part of the game. and that may ring to be true, but like all stats, they should be taken into context, rather than appearance.

It's about context. True, sometimes a guy can get one based on empty stats but most times when you see a guy get one, it means he impacted the game in several ways. You got others involved (assists), you hustled (if you are a wing and got 10+ boards) and you scored some points. It's hard to get one by just showing up. You have to earn one most of the time by exerting yourself. And in that sense, I always like to see guys getting one because it usually indicates the guy came to play.

I'd say it'd be on the higher side since all the notable players known for getting triple doubles are generally from winning teams.
Oscar, Magic, Wilt, Bron, Kidd, Jordan, Pippen, etc...

You look at the players with the most triple-doubles in league history - dudes like Oscar, Magic, Kidd, Wilt, Bird, Lever, LeBron, Hondo, Jordan, so on - and you find some of the greatest all-around players of all-time, some of the greatest, period... Most prone to winning ways.
Plus, most of those dudes there played great D, btw.

Because Americans are dim fellas and thus easily impressed by arbitrary and selective dud stats like the triple double. "OMG he got that 10th rebound, game is much more memorable and impressive than if it had simply been 35/9/15!"
It fits right in with their culture of pointless sensationalism and nonsense.

I just personally feel that something like 45points 5 assist 3 rebounds would be on a higher level of contribution then 12p 10a 10r
Magic johnson got praised for being one of the greatest all round players his defense is crap.
I feel that some guys just get triple doubles because theyre tall as fck usually have the ball majority of the time. And are usually good passers magic lebron etc

That's a straw man argument.
Anyone who isn't trolling will regard a 45/ANYTHING/ANYTHING game over a 12/10/10.
Triple doubles are impressive certainly, but we also have a name for a 45/5/3... we call it a "40 point game". In fact, if someone scores >50 we call it a "fifty point game". Melo and KD even dropped "Sixty point games" the season before last and no one was dumb enough to suggest a 15/10/10 was better.

Because it's impressive for a Guard to get 10 boards, and a Forward to get 10 assists.

And I like the defensive trip-dubs; either Steals or Blocks. You get a trip-dub with Steals or Blocks... and there's no doubt about your impact.

I guess. See in my honest opnion guys like hakeem and pippen are the best all round players because how much they impact both ends. Where as magic johnson and lebron are just as impactful if not more but their contribution is more over to one side of the court

Because it indicates that you have an amazing all-around game. An arbitrary benchmark that people use as a standard for that.
It's like...what if a student get a 4.0 GPA. It indicates that he's very smart academically. However, he could've cheated to get those GPA or maybe the tests are incredibly easy at his school.

His biting of the hand that fed him is no different than millennialist biting the hand of Jordan who indirectly fed them. No Jordan, no NBA in its present state.
