Kobe was the heir apparent and proved to not only be the heir but straight up grabbed the throne, crown and scepter. He has far exceeded everyone's expectation of not only becoming the next MJ but the first Kobe.

Lebron was anointed the 'chosen one'....so did he meet his expectation? I would say far from it.

Realistically....Lebron's should be at 10 rings with his expectations. Some guys meet there expectations and some don't.

kobe made his own expectations

he put himself in the next jordan discussion. nobody did it for him like lebron

kobe was the 13th pick and traded before even playing 1 nba game

lebron was the 1st pick and signed a 100 million dollar nike contract before playing 1 nba game

kobe exceeded initial expectations...

the team that drafted him didnt think he wouldnt become better than prime valde divac

cleveland thought vitaly potapenko would be better

g-state thought todd fuller would be better

indiana thought eric dampier would be better

dallas thought samaki walker would be better

etc...

lebron was hand picked by the nba/media/nike/espn as the next savior all time goat legend before he even stepped foot on the basketball court

which is why he continuously is gifted freebee after freebee

the ROTY award melo shoulda got

the 2009 mvp kobe shoulda got

the 2010 mvp dwight shoulda got

the 2015 espy for best champion when he didnt win a championship

votes for finals mvp when he shot 38% ( 27% beyond 5 feet ) with 2 wins

lebrons 2 for 6 means he failed

period

kobe on the other hand far exceeded expectations. he made himself and put himself in the discussion with MJ

Well, one of the things you need in order to pass the Jordan expectations is to be 100% in the finals and 100% FMVP.

Both Lebron and Kobe failed.

Both of them only won 2 Finals MVP. And Kobe is only a 1x NBA MVP.

Dwight should have won in 2011, not 2010. You have your years mixed up

Kobe demanded to play for the 2nd most successful franchise in NBA history. Said he wouldn't play in the NBA if not on the Lakers. Said he only wanted to play basketball, yet dictated who he played for. Would have been taken with the 8th overall pick but made sure he went to the 2nd most successful franchise in NBA history.............. all before playing 1 game in the NBA.

LeBron was chosen 1st overall. Signed his contract for a franchise known more for losing than winning and with no titles (no drama bullshit).......all before playing 1 game in the NBA.

Kobe had the tougher path if you think about it. He played for the Lakers which had high expectations of him.

Lebron is pretty fortunate enough to play for a small club because knowing what we know now, how fragile he is mentally, his career may have been destroyed under the bright lights of LA.

It's like a quarterback who is thrown out there with the sharks. A guy like Lebron you have to build him up mentality where Kobe jumped in and swam with them.

Bron was under the national spotlight as a sophomore in high school. All eyes were in him..despite playing in Cleveland.

Lebron was hyped as the next MJ/Magic when he was still playing in HS, got the Chosen One tattoo on his back and took over the MJ powder toss and everything...while Kobe had the skillset in HS they said he was too skinny and they questioned whether he could even play at the next level, barely getting burn in his rookie season until they needed someone who wasn't scared to take tough shots in the Playoffs..

Kobe exceeded expectations and they were calling him the next MJ around 2001/2002 and he proved it with leading the most dominant Playoff team of all time in 01, his breakout regular season in 03, being a one-man army in 06 & 07, leading a team to 3 straight Finals without Shaq and winning b2b.

So did Magic Johnson.

I recall back in 2003 Lebron being compared more to Magic than anything, but way more athletic, because of the passing ability he displayed back then. I don't think people were thinking of him being a guy scoring 27-30 like he was in his peak. Any MJ comparisons were more based on athleticism and not scoring prowess.
