He's not. Its his teammate though...so what do you expect?

When healthy Kobe is still probably an elite offensive player. Potentially an all-star.

this is really obnoxious

we get threads anytime Kobe's teammates do anything that might put Kobe in a negative light, yet when they compliment him it's just excused as "oh its his teammate"

obviously Kobe isn't the best in the league, but Bass was asked where Kobe ranks currently in the league, and his answer demonstrated a tremendous amount of respect and admiration

but I guess we should get back to pretending like his teammates hate him

Even old past their prime players can be just as good as they were in their prime for stretches. But after the achilles I don't think Kobe can go toe to toe with a healthy Durant or Lebron in terms of impact and dominating a game.

I hope Kobe proves me wrong. He's been in the NBA so long I can't imagine it without him.

Dude he's in his 19th year.

If this were Kobe coming off an injury in 2005...or even in 2010...sure. We could take these comments seriously.

I'm not hating on Kobe, just being realistic.

i just said he's obviously not the best player in the league, thats not the point

we've gone an entire summer hearing how nobody likes Kobe and everybody hates him, just funny that when his teammates say something like this nobody wants to talk about it, but when Bass says he hasn't talked to Kobe in the 2 weeks that he's been a laker we get a 10 page thread..

Obviously an exaggeration, but it's basically just Bass trying to facilitate camaraderie with Kobe and acknowledging an all time great. I think it's a nice level of respect, even though it was probably just an off cuff remark. No need to make a big deal about it either way.

19th year Kobe coming off torn achilles, broken leg = 47.7% TS

Why is Kobe mentally tougher than those players? Because he makes mean faces?

I've never witnessed anything in particular that makes Kobe more mentally tough than most. What is it that he does? How does one measure mental toughness?

If anything, Durant and Curry have shown they are more mentally tough than both Bron and Kobe. When rattled for a moment, they come back, and still play good basketball. Curry gets locked up for a few games, still puts up a great finals. Same with Durant when he got locked up. Bron gets shook out of a game, plays like trash, way below his standards in a final. Same with Kobe on several occasions.

So Durant and Curry>Bron and Kobe, if we actually have any metric to go by. Unless you have a better explanation?

He was literally using more possessions than scoring points, that's detrimental to ANY team in ANY era. That's just offense, his defense was also terrible.

He was a negative on both ends. Overall, the Lakers were -11.8 with him on the court.

You can't just look at a bunch of highlights. For every one of those great performances, there were 4-5 horrible ones.

First of all, ORTG is a team stat. Same as the +/- stuff.

His averages are no worse than MJ during his Wizards years, and nobody thought dude was one of the worst players in the league. Was Kobe inefficient and a terrible defender? Yeah obviously - but ranking him with some of the worst players, including scrubs that hardly see PT, is crazy talk.

Those are full game edits, BTW. Kobe had a decent year offensively if we consider the injuries he's had to overcome.

Difference with MJ is:

- His defense was nowhere as bad as Kobe's.

- '02 and '03 were more offensively depressed years than '15. MJ's numbers relative to everyone else weren't as bad as Kobe's were.

- Kobe was still more inefficient.

- MJ's team didn't start getting destroyed when he was on the floor like the Lakers did with Kobe.

You're right about Kobe not being as bad as the scrubs that hardly play. I should've said he was one of the worst starters who got significant minutes, which he was.

This isn't hate because I want to see him play well, but he was very disappointing last season. It is what is is, hopefully he's better next season.

I appreciate you trying to have an honest discussion, but players "individual" ORtg isn't just a separate metric from the TEAM measure. Yeah its adjusted but it still includes bits of data from the team averages to get its number.

Kobe was actually a net positive (RPM) on offense.
http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/page/2/sort/RPM/position/2

^That's what to look for if you're into advanced numbers (separate of team play).

I'll agree with the MJ stuff, because defenses were arguably at their best during that time period. Kobe was actually more efficient than 2002 Jordan was though - .477% vs .468% TS

Kobe being one of the worst starters in the league isn't something I would agree with, but I won't argue against it.

Last year he looked hindered and was still playing through a years rust. Didn't get a chance to REALLY prove himself because of the shoulder injury, but I think he'll be healthier this season. He should be better and more efficient all-around.

I posted a lot more than efficiency numbers. Biggest difference is the Cavs weren't constantly going on runs when Lebron went to the bench like the Lakers did all season when Kobe would sit. In fact in 6 Finals games Bron's backcourt couldn't even make a single field goal without him on the floor. :oldlol:
But yes, let's pretend that Bron's inefficiency due to injuries and fatigue is the same as Kobe LITERALLY being a net negative all last season. :hammerhead:

He's right based off the fact that a healthy Kobe was top 5 in MVP voting and was carrying a bunch of scrubs to the Playoffs in the West by his damn self and that an unhealthy Kobe who had played 6 games in 18 months could still put up a 30 pt triple double, hit game-winners and drop 17 assists and lock down Bran in the clutch with a torn rotator cuff...

Healthy Kobe is going to be a top 10 player in the game, like it or not. He has elite court vision, he can score from anywhere on the floor, great leader, great 1 on 1 defender.... The last 3 years he's had enough time to rest and fix whatever issues he's been having with his body, his legs should be rested. I think we'll see Kobe have a comeback year like A-Rod right now, and they both go to the same German doctor as well.

as we can see not only was Lebron historically inefficient in the playoffs, but he was also the 3rd best player on his team when the Cavs were healthy, and barely had more impact than Tristan Thompson for the entire playoffs

i wonder how many other players we could say this of when we add the qualifier "if he is healthy."

that's the thing dumb ass.

Kobe had three freak injuries, he was able to recover from his achilles and knee injury and still showed flashes of his old self last season, the shoulder injury was unrelated to his leg issues so he should be fine this upcoming season if he hasn't had any setbacks, so far I've only heard from his teammates that he's been working out during the summer, apparently has slimmed down a bit more to put less pressure on his legs.

Every fanboy is going to believe that his favourite player is the toughest player mentally. Personally, I think it's Duncan who's usually as stoic as they come no matter the situation. Ditto, Curry or Dwyane Wade.
I can't imagine ANY player single handidly taking over an NBA finals series when down 2-0,and trailing by 13 points with minutes remaining in game 3.

But like i said, it's all subjective. And silly. There's no proof one way or another thay one player is mentally stronger than another.

So many butthurt Lebronfags. Kobe been living rent free since the 90's. He hasn't played since 2013 for a full season and still so butthurt hes in the upper echelon of legendary players while Lebron hasn't cracked top 100.

Well, not really a big deal. Bass is obviously and shamelessly trying to get into Kobe's good graces. As well as simply showing respect for a legend, most role players do and have done in the past.

So kobe fans chill, he's done being the best player in the league. That ship has sailed.

Kobe haters, same. He's still a legend.

Probably not since the 90s, considering they were both too young and Lebron was not a player in the NBA in the 90s.

So injured and aging Lebron shooting 42% in the playoffs = historically inefficient, but peak Kobe shooting 43% in the 2002 playoffs AGAINST SINGLE COVERAGE is supposed to be GOAT worthy? :oldlol: This is why you guys are known as Kobetards

nope Kyrie played 13 games, and I guess that we can conclude from advance stats like WS/48 that he was better than Lebron in the games he was healthy enough to play while Bran barely had more impact than TT..

in fact TT had a higher offensive WS than bran, so we can conclude that TT was more impactfull offensively than bran throughout the playoffs..

Kobe is still the best player in the game but his body can no longer go for 30 minutes a game over an 82 game season.

Honestly it would be best to rest him up regular season, then let him go 35-40 minutes a game come playoff time.

It is sad that the great Gawdbe's knees are holding him back.

This is why Lebron Stans are retarded stat nerd number crunchers.

NBA defense in 2002 was much better than anything Lebron had to go against. Players were allowed to hand check and hold and get away with loads of contact. Now if a superstar like Lebron gets sneezed on, or grazed with the outside of a pinky he gets automatic 2 freethrows. Things that get called for flagrant 1s now was normal basketball back in 2002 and sometimes didn't even get called.

If prime Kobe were around in today's NBA he would get 30 freethrows a game easily, and could probably average 40ppg at a pretty high shooting percentage.

Oh and if Kobe's healthy, he is arguably the BEST IN THE WORLD. Def wouldn't shoot 36% on 36fga in the finals vs 1 on 1 defense.

bran stans so cringe right now. when Kobe is healthy he's def elite. he can still drop 40 on the best defenses out there. Kobe is more dominant than Duncan (his closest adversary) and more handsome than Bran.

He was healthy for 35 games last season, and he gave no indication he is still an elite player. Meanwhile, Duncan was still balling in the playoffs.

The last time we saw him healthy was two years ago. You are just making assumptions.

Based on the play we've seen (2014/15 Regular Seasons), Kobe isn't close to elite anymore. He's one of the worst defenders in the league and he shoots 35%. You literally don't need to say anything else (though you could).

If healthy, Kobe can be an elite offensive player. Maybe not top 5 or so but definitely top 10.

As an overall package? Nah, not elite anymore. At least not consistently.

he was battling shoulder injury all season long, probably cost him at least 15 points in FG%
