LAS VEGAS -- "LeBron James knows he has a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic basketball team if he wants it, according to USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo.

"He will be in town during the course of this week‎," Colangelo said. "He won't be participating in any practices to the best of my know‎ledge, but ... he knows he has a [roster] spot.

James is one of three players, along with Carmelo Anthony and David Robinson, to represent the United States in three different Olympic tournaments. Along with Anthony -- who, as ESPN first reported, plans to practice later Tuesday in his formal return from midseason knee surgery -- James thus has an opportunity be a record-setter if he chooses to play on the 12-man squad bound for Rio de Janeiro next August.

He'll be the first superstar I can think of to have 3x Gold Medals if he competes in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Shame the 2004 team sucked, otherwise he could've been looking at 4x potential Gold Medals.

James Harden and Anthony Davis are likely to do the same when their career's are over, I can see them even eclipsing 4 gold medals barring injury.

If they choose to compete that many times ...

LeBron has been on the National Team from ages 19, to 23, to 27, and now potentially 31.

I don't know if those guys will be on the team that many times. This will be Harden's 2nd Olympics, and Gold Medal.

But he was a role player on the 2012 team off the bench. LeBron has been the team's best, or top three from 2008 to potentially 2016.

Don't count chickens before they hatch.
