Taylor Swift on top of ABBA.
Timbaland on top of ABBA.
Won't even finish the list.

Taylor writes amazing songs, her own songs too.
Timbaland is a known plagiarist. :biggums:
I get why Cobain is on the list but the guy from Green Day? Green Day guy over Eddie Vedder(not even listed) of Pearl Jam? :facepalm
I remember Green Day writing songs about mast*rbation.
You guys know how many great songwriters there are in this world?
To separate them they probably considered 'hits' and Swift got some hits.

Bruce Springsteen above Neil Young....:lol :oldlol:  :oldlol:
This list is garbage. Neil Young is easily a top 5 songwriter of all time.

Let me guess--the list is heavily weighted towards baby boomer artists, with a few modern acts sprinkled in to fool grandpa into thinking Rolling Stone is still hip.

Eminem made the list? I guarantee he hasn't come up with a melody in his life.

That's disgraceful. How many artists have sampled ABBA throughout the years???
Taylor ****ING Swift over Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi, 2Pac, Big L, and pretty much every artist ever?
Are you ****ing kidding me?
LOL @ calling Biggie the "best rapper ever" Kanye West over 2Pac :oldlol:

I don't like Taylor Swift but lets put this into perspective....her songs:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_written_by_Taylor_Swift
Almost all hits. Tons of them.
She can't break out of her stupid pop shit but she writes hit songs. Everything she writes becomes gold. At this rate she can crack top 20 therefore she is ranked deservedly so.

Its funny that nobody bitches about the top 20...but can complain about the bottom of the list, which quite frankly, should be a coin flip.
Step your game up.
Smokey Robinson is too damn high.

I can easily picture the fossils at Rolling Stone sitting around compiling this list:
"We have too many artists from the 60s and 70s. We need a token artist from 2015. Who's hot right now?"
"Taylor Swift."
"Okay, throw her in!"
Lady Gaga would have been included had they released this shit five years ago. :facepalm :lol
PS: The exclusion of Jimi Hendrix is just flat-out trolling.

That's silly. Kanye has great lyrics. His lyrics give us an emotional vulnerabilty few do while relating to youth culture, including social and political commentary and not being afraid to try new things. How many rappers would write something like Only One or Jesus Walks(and I'm an atheist who hates Christianity fwiw)?

If this was to do with producing or being an artist, I would gladly put him higher. But if it's solely on lyricism there's no way he deserves to be this high.

R Kelly should be in the top 20..... This guy has written for himself and virtually every R and B act for the past 25 years...

Lol yeah they are like 3-4 spots apart and it's a tragedy? But Springsteen is great in his own right so it's kinda ridiculous to single him out vs. Neil Young. Bowie at 39 does seem crazy tho.

The problem isn't necessarily Kanye West or Taylor Swift... it's the exclusion of people like Jimi Hendrix, who should have -- not just been on the list -- but been high on the list. His body of work considering how brief his career was is flat-out awe inspiring.
His releases as a singer songwriter began in late 1967 and he was dead by the end of 1970.
In that tiny window, he wrote and performed at the highest level classics like Purple Haze, Fire, Little Wing, The Wind Cries Mary, Voodoo Child, Angel, Foxy Lady, Red House, Bold As Love, Castles Made of Sand, Manic Depression, and a ton of other songs that are still as popular almost 50 years later as they were when he released them... maybe moreso.
Are we really going to sit here and pretend that Taylor Swift or Kanye West are going to have that kind of staying power?
List is a joke for a lot of reasons, but their decision to exclude Hendrix is just embarrassing.

Good question. I'm not seeing how Eminem and Kanye are songwriters. Kanye at least produces, but I doubt he's ever crafted a killer hook on his own, without sampling. Eminem is basically just a lyricist.
Listen to "Stronger". Daft Punk does the heavy lifting on that track, not Kanye.

No problem wanting Hendrix in, but Kanye is not the guy you should be looking to count out. I wouldn't discount his staying power either.
