I take a mini vacation every few months or so to someplace random.

For those who haven't used this website, I highly, HIGHLY, recommend it.

You can Trivago all you want, but Hotwire is where it's at. Yes, you cant see the exact hotel you're booking, but for the price, its golden. You get to see the area, the guest rating, and the star rating.

Case in point: I managed to book a 4* hotel Labor Day weekend for $158 dollars. Once I book, I go check the hotel's website, and *boom* $340 a night, and nothing less than $300 on any other website. Turns out its a Marina/Resort, private beach, two pools, looks like someplace you'd see in the Caribbean.

Have some fun in life, take a risk, and book without knowing your hotel. The discount, plus the excitement of choosing which mystery hotel to stay at, is worth it. I have booked through Hotwire nearly a dozen times (probably more) and am always happy with the results.

Where you going for vacation? I've only ever used hotels.com, does hotwire work internationally? The only traveling I've ever done is abroad.

Charleston, SC.

I'm sure they do an international deal.

So basically you put in a destination, Las Vegas for example. Hotwire will give you a list of hotels, star ratings, customer reviews, and prices, and the area the hotel is in, but wont give you the name of the hotel.

Normally I look at the area (for convenience when sight seeing and what not) and the star rating. That's what caught my eye with our hotel. It was 4*'s and only $158. It had decent reviews (like 80% positive) so I took a shot. Turns out its a resort.

Once you decide on a hotel, you click it, and pay. After you are paid, it will tell you which hotel it is.

I used to be a Hotels.com guy, even got my free night stay after 10 nights twice, but once my father introduced my to Hotwire, I was hooked.

Seems coo - the range of area is quite big though (at least when I tried it for Seoul).

I guess if you are planning to rent a car it's not a big issue. Cool though - will definitely keep it in mind when the girl and I take our random weekend trips to a different state.

using it for Vegas seems sketchy, because i feel youd end up at hooters hotel, the Q, or one of those other less than stellar hotels that some how made the strip

Like I said, you can always check the star rating. I base my decisions off of that, really. Once I get a star rating and a price I can live with, then I check the user reviews. They will get a % of 'recommended' reviews to look at.

For me, personally, Im not much of a 'name brand' type person, although it will tell you, for example, '3* hotel similar to a Hilton', or something like that.

It's pretty sweet. You should check it out.

I use it when going to NYC since midtown hotels are all basically the same and they rip you off. The only caution I would have is that they often book you into a hotel that is undergoing a renovation, which sucks. If you wait until the last minute you can get some great deals. Last trip to NYC I booked just before getting on the plane. I got the Westin Grand Central for $89 a night. I also use it for rental cars and usually save a couple hundred bucks off the weekly rental.

I believe South Carolina has two of the most frequented beaches in the US.

I'm a history buff though, which is a big reason why I like Charleston.

I love the Ghost tours. Part historical/part mystery/part horror type deal.

I usually do one in every city.

I used it in NO. Got two hotels, one was garbage but passable for a night, other was real nice and super cheap. If you're traveling by yourself or with people equally non picky (because you might get somewhere not very nice) it's great.
