View Full Version : Coolest decade?

What was the "coolest" decade in american history?

The coolest decade imo has to go to the 80s. God damn the 80s were so bad ass - awesome music, awesome hair, awesome one-liners in movies.... awesome ambience in general.

Remember back when cars were actually cool?

And the 20s must have been cool....those wild parties and stuff

Lol, are you retarded OP? George Washington put up a good fight, but his soldiers morale was very low and not that well trained, we wouldn't be the U.S today if the French didn't blockade the British. George Washington was definitely a great leader and it just wasn't fair that he died to "epiglottitis"... he deserved a honorable death, not an assassination by jews.

60s.

20s was terrible if you weren't a guy or hot broad and the south was still poorer than ever even before the great depression(which ain't shit compared to 2007-2012), but even if you were a guy you would have been drafted into WW2 beyond your own will. Personally, I would love to serve my nation, but not serve the private banks which what WW2 was all about.

my buddy was reminiscing over the 80s last night, which makes not much sense since hes 22 until you meet him and realize he knows everything about the 80s... i only caught two years of it unfortunately. i think that's the decade where the "we know we're cool" streak that launched in the 60s truly peaked... and then eventually ushered in the self-conscious 90s and the paralysis of the new millennium where we can't even figure out what cool means anymore.

I think Nanners is being sarcastic. The 80s had some terrific music, unlike the 3 examples of shit he posted. There was tackiness galore and a lot to poke fun at, but there was an underlying subculture that was really cool.

For me I've always been fascinated with the 1920s.

my hard on is for the 60s and that isn't changing any time soon

early 60s tho, before everything really caught fire, while the tight collars were still scratching their heads wondering what the hell everybody was so hot and bothered about... that would have been fun to witness

it'll be remembered as the beginning of a cultural revolution similar to the enlightenment but perhaps not of the same magnitude... though not for another few hundred years

The 80s was all about tacky excess. It was a d*uchebag's paradise.

Probably early 80s to mid 90s. At least where I grew up, all the people I know who were teens or in their early 20s during this time said going to Manhattan for nightlife wasn't as expensive and it was more lively/unique than it is now. I remember talking to someone who thinks it is a shame the city has changed so much despite being a lot safer in Manhattan and most of the surrounding borough areas.

Ton of great movies came out during that time period too. Also experience late 80s/early 90s NBA. Larry Bird/Magic rivalry. Pistons winning a few in a row. MJ winning three in a row. The Knicks being consistent contenders in the East. Seeing boxing matches like SRL, etc. Watch Tyson fights. Sounds like a great time to be a sports fan too. Hip hop craze, NWA and East Coast coming up in '94 with Nas and Biggie albums.

Yes all of this... Tyson fights were amazing, boxing will never go back to that

And Jordan was a fcking God... It's rare that a player is so amazing that every fan of every team loves him.

90s but thats probably because I was raised in the era.

Music - End of cheezy rock music bands better alternatives such as Nirvana, RHCP, Greenday. In terms of rap, Tupac, Notorious BIG, Nas, Eminem, Jay Z etc.

Movies - Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, Braveheart, etc

Economy - Clinton's years were some of the most prosperous in US history.

Technology - Computers becoming more affordable and more common, introduction of internet, tech companies, the amount of progress from the SNES to Dreamcast is crazy (Dreamcast btw had internet gameplay, internet browser, advanced graphics way ahead of its time) etc.

80s was the decade of corny ass music and movies.

80s movies is a huge advantage. 80s music is good in certain genres but gets beat by the other decades overall. 80s style was outrageous but the reason it's awesome is that everyone bought into it. The suits were ugly, the color were ridiculous, and the hair was crazy but that decade was swag to the maximum.

Plus, DonDadda just ****ed his own cause by posting a Prince pic as not cool. Prince in the 80s was his prime and any effort to discredit the decade with a photo of him is just sacrilegious.

maybe the mainstream stunk by comparison but i feel like there were a lot of really awesome underground trends/subcultures that are now ubiquitous in this day and age but were just getting going... punk, rap, satire, special fx tech, environmental movement + feminism + 3rd world solidarity + accepting gay people, jays winning two world series in a row, compoooooters, ummm a lot more

i mean all of those were going to take off eventually and had been brewing for a while, but i don't think they all just happened to coincide, theres a reason shit opened up a lot between 1979 and 1989..

Toronto went back to back in '92 and' 93.

A lot of legitimately cool stuff came out in the 80s, but the decade is ultimately defined by its cheesiness.

Cheesiness = not cool. It's fun to look back on it (if nothing else, it was highly distinct), but it doesn't hold up.

Hell, the Lakers wore those throwback 80s shorts a few years back as a goof. The players were so embarrassed, they ditched them at halftime.

It came late to Canada didn't it?

Rap was born in the 70's. Rapper's Delight came out in 1979. Kurtis Blow released The Breaks in 1980

Planet Rock by Afrika Bambata was a massive hit in NYC. The Message by Grandmaster Flash was even bigger. Both came out in 1982.

Run DMC had a single by 1983. Rick Rubin had produced his first hop hop on Def Jam, a single for rapper T La Rock in 1983 and the sound caused Russell Simmons to seek him out (he was shocked he was white (http://nypost.com/2014/10/11/the-wild-and-crazy-stories-behind-the-early-days-of-def-jam/)) and join with him. In 1984 LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys were the first singles on Def Jam Hip hop was so popular that a movie came out that year, Beat Street. The Beastie single (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsVAOjVYQnY) was withdrawn because, they never cleared the AC/DC samples they used.

you were proud to be an American in those days.

90's were almost as good, good times in the 90's

The American Dream kinda went to $hit after Bush Jr. got elected.

after WWII this is how I'd rank it:

1.) 80's
2.) 90's
3.) 50's
4.) 70's
5.) 60's
6.) 2000s
7.) 2010s
8.) 2020s (will probably be the worst decade ever)

But if there was a time America was ever GREAT... it was in the 1980s.

Every time I think of a cool decade, something bad about that decade comes up next. Tough one.

I must admit 80s were the coolest. I don't mind the 70s either but Vietnam War, draft, cold War going on at full scope is pretty crappy.

I also like the 00s a lot due to the rise of the broadband internet era (56k modem, AOL days were crappy internet). I have so many great memories linked to the 00s that I just cannot let go of. Pretty much most of my teenage years from elementary school in the very beginning of the decade to starting college in the very end. Boy do I miss those days. I often wish I can go back and enjoy those times again! Some very good movies, music, videogames, basketball, etc. But I guess 00s is more personal.

It has to be the 80s imo

That's just nostalgia that you have, bro.

I guarantee you that you were born in the 70s, so the 80s and 90s were your peak of your youth, young adulthood. That's why you're so fond of those decades.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you have the 50s so high on your list??

Suprised at all the love for the 80's.

In my opinion, the 60's were the best by quite a bit. For music. The cars. The sexual revolution. Star Trek. Muhammad Ali. John F. Kennedy. The 60's crushes everything in my opinion. Driving around in a Bullitt mustang, smoking pot, listening to the Beatles, on your way to a drive-in movie to watch Clint Eastwood in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.......you can't beat that.

Oh yeah, mini-skirts were invented in the 60's. Women fully embraced bikinis as well.

I've narrowed it down between the 1790s and 1820s for the music alone.

Sorry, didn't see that you posited Amurican history, I'll have to approach the question from a different angle now.

A lot of people love the 80's, but I don't miss them. I was a teen back then, and I was an idiot. Don't miss those days. I was my own worst enemy.

There were good music and movies, though (even though the hair bands got too cheesy). 1987 in particular was one of the best year ever for movies (BHC II, The Untouchables, Throw Momma From the Train, Fatal Attraction, Wall Street, etc...).

50's for the most part were peaceful and conservative compared to 60's.

60's were pretty f*cking chaotic, too much drama.

80's were the perfect balance.

I think 90s were also a cool decade.

No offense, but you're wrong... there was very little about the 90s that could be considered "cool"

For starters, everyone in the 90s was listening to whiney and depressing alt rock like Nirvana, gay pop music like nsync/backstreet, or trash like Limp Bizkit and Korn

men were wearing pleated pants and turtlenecks/sweaters

people were converting their entire retirement accounts into beanie babies collections

the majority of tv content was awful (go try to watch an episode of friends or seinfield if you dont believe me)

you were expected to waste your time rewinding vhs tapes before returning them to blockbuster

AOL was pretty cool, but going online would tie up the only phone line for the entire household

everyone had AIDS

frosted tips were a thing

guys had wallet chains

...etc

The only "cool" things from the 90s were Pogs, the movie Big Lebowski, and the early video game consoles (especially N64 and PS1)

I was born in the 90s. I didn't say a lot of things were generally cool back in the day but i used to like the music from that era, as well as the old, classic cartoons and tv shows. Also liked the fact that the bulls became a renowned dynasty during the time. Then cars started to be more modern, with suvs rising to popularity and ate a lot of passenger car sales. Good old days.

Now I'm starting to feel old because no one from the 90s are below 20s anymore. :(

I was born in the 80s but I mostly grew up in the 90s... and while I definitely have nostalgia for 90s stuff (like the cartoons and some of the music), and while theres no denying the coolness of some 90s stuff (like the cars... McLaren F1 has a strong argument for the coolest car of all time, and other cars like the mkiv Toyota Supra and original Viper GTS were incredibly cool too)... I dont think theres any question that overall the 90s were severaly lacking in coolness, especially compared to the 80s or 2000s.

2000s brought upon wide adaption of internet, social media, and smart phones. Sports wise we saw prime Tiger, Shaq, Mayweather, Bolt, Phelps, Pujols, Federer, Brady, Duncan, Kobe, young LeBron, etc. Probably the GOAT decade for Sports.

The only thing lacking was music.

Ehh, maybe but that's only apparent if you compare it to the other excellent decades like the ones you mentioned. However, if you compare it to say the 2010s, then you'd think the 90s weren't too shabby at all, at least when it comes to music, cartoons or tv shows and what more but technology was still a bit meh plus internet and online games weren't a norm yet.

I was born in '97 but if I could choose any decade to grow up in, it'd definitely be the 80s. No question.
