I know the dunk had been a playground fixture for longer, who was the first player you guys can think of to do it in some sort of NBA format? I know somebody who did it in 1986 if you guys can't think of anyone prior to that. I'm thinking that might be the first one.

The first elbow dunk I'd personally ever seen, in terms of the full arm in with a hang, came from Vince Carter at the 2000 dunk contest. I was a huge NBA fan at that time, as I am now, and I was pretty confident going into that night's proceedings that I'd seen every dunk possible. Carter proved me wrong at least two, probably three times. I had never ever imagined someone could hang from their elbow before that night.

That said, once YouTube came around, I caught a glimpse of Kobe Bryant doing the elbow hang in what looks to be a mall in the Philippines in 1998. Of course, the rim looked low, but it was completed nonetheless. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLK0rz9pqDc

Then again, I've heard some say Carter performed the dunk at a Gary Payton charity game in 1997, though from Carter himself, I can only find him saying he first gave it a shot "the summer before leading up to that year", referring to the 2000 contest. http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/dunk-2000/oral-history-2000-nba-slam-dunk-contest

In terms of in-game, I'm not sure I've seen anyone dip like Carter did against Washington in 2001, with the full wrap but no hang: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gg5Wha-sj-c

I cannot tell if this original post was a setup for some sort of agenda but one way or another, I'd be interested to see what angle we're taking here about the earliest to pull it off.
