As a huge fan of Alycia Debnam Carey, I'm gonna say I enjoyed it. Same ol' TWD -- from the effects to the storytelling.
It's still zombies, still TWD (like wtf? Stop with the dramatic effects, you guys are just not good at it). I think that the series itself needed this show to happen for obvious reasons -- to see from other's perspective, but I wouldn't if they had a flashback episode in the main show.
8/10 Good stuff.
oh the horror

Honestly this show dragged a lot for me. It was a bit tedious to sit through. The same old Walking Dead formula of sitting through 45 mins of dialogue and then some action or actual excitement. Here's to hoping it picks up later. I do like that there's some refreshing perspective from another area finally

i'm surprised the liberal ISH media didn't condemn this for portraying a black guy as a drug dealer :coleman:
anyways it was meh. not good, not terrible. still too hard to judge since its the setup before the epidemic.
at least i figured out where all of the budget for Walking Dead went where they spent a whole season on a broken down farm :sleeping

BORING.
I guess this was a "introduce the characters and narrative" episode, but did it really need to drag on for 1 1/2 hours?

He was the only interesting character on the show and they wiped him out quick.
The guy who plays the junkie son is a horrible actor. That scene at the diner was cringeworthy.
They overdid it with the "fake the audience" scenes, especially the close-up of the principal from behind. Were we really supposed to fall for that?
So, not worth watching?
I like TWD now that theres more action. Is this not like that at all? Just another attempt to get viewers?

I recorded it, so I guess shame on me if I get spoiled in here, although I'm not someone terribly bothered by spoilers that aren't on the Sixth Sense type level of spoilering.
Anyway ... first thing I noticed when I set it to record was the 90 minute run time, and I'll let you know if it drags for me, because I find TWD is really a lot easier with the commercials skipped out.
I'm hopeful for the outbreak perspective, but I'm not sure how long this can last, because once they finish with the outbreak reaction, this will feel too much like the original which is more about survival and maintaining humanity.
I've always like Kim Dickens, but only in roles where she plays a lady pimp, which is pretty much everything. (That's not really true ... but it seems that way. She's one of those people who seems like she should've been more famous than she was, but she's often tied to supplementary roles in good stuff. I'm hoping this isn't her attempt at reaching for a bigger star by taking the lead in something that's crap).

I'm withholding final judgement until next week since this was a set-up episode, but it's not looking all that promising. Some of the plot was nonsensical, for example (in WHITE)
The junky son tells the stepdad about the carnage in the church so the dad goes there by himself instead of calling the police. Okay, that's stupid but plausible. But then after he literally slips in human guts, does he then call the authorities? Hell no, he goes back again this time with the mom.

They should have done more with the dying guy in the hospital bed to make it more intense. That's what was missing, the intensity. They had chances throughout but didn't capitalize. I hope next week turns out better

I thought the 2nd episode was pretty good. Everyone is spread out and things have heated up quickly.
Btw, I didn't think much of the girl who plays Alicia in the first episode, but I think there is something very attractive about her. She looks pretty and possibly wife-material.

I just had a few issues..
Biggest issue I have is that the characters were all over the place halfway through the episode - it was probably meant to be chaotic like that but still insane for us viewers.
Other issue I had was the parents not telling Alicia what was going on out there. The moment when she tried to leave to go to Matt's house could have been avoided. I don't think most parents would hide something that drastic from a high school kid.
Third, I don't quite understand how the virus started. It began spreading from the church? That portion is bit confusing for the viewers.
Finally, how the hell did Tobias know so much about the virus? And he returned to the school just to get the knife? Wtf...

Another meh show. So many times they act different to a real human would. Keeping facts from people, not calling cops or being worried during some events in the first episode etc. The fact its already feeling slow episode 2 is a bad sign too considering how much twd has had that issue in the past.

In ep one tobias said he been following it on the Internet. Putting news stories together and he explained he went there because the other places would be looted first. He wants the food. The rest i agree with. Like why would you try to talk to a zombie when one already tried to eat you last episode?

I'm curious why people are expecting to be all-out fast pace to begin with? It's suppose to show the beginning sets of the zombie apocalypse and why it happened. It's suppose to start out slow to build up the story. It's not like The Walking Dead where Rick basically wakes up in a hospital after it's all said-and-done.

Wow, so many things about this show. First off just happy that some form of walking dead is on. Now the show certainly is going somewhat slowly, but so what and what do people expect. The first 2 season of TWD were pretty slow too and criticized for it, but then now when you rewatch them you really appreciate how great they were.
And getting mad that people in the show make dumb decisions, news flash, people are dumb and make dumb decisions all the time in real life.
In some ways I'm surprised at how quickly some of the characters were able to actually realize kind of what was going on and what they had to do for self preservation. I feel like a few days into this and they have more perspective about walkers then Hershel did all of TWD season 2. But then when the Mom tries to help the principal at the school it's like WTF is wrong with you lady, you have an idea of whats going on and that dude looks F'd up, get away from him.

The first season of the twd wasn't slow, the second season was a total piece of shit due to the budget. I can't believe you just said people think season 2 is great, it's been derided by everyone.

Watching season 2 the first time I though the whole Sofia storyline dragged on way too far and things went pretty slow, but just re-watching it a month or two ago I loved it and thought the payoff of finding her in the barn was worth it, that may have been one of the best scenes from any season. And the next few episodes after that with Rick and Hershel at the bar were really our first glimpse at what a badass Rick could be.
I can't believe you just said season 2 has been derided by everyone. Like I care what any critics or bloggers say about anything. I never said it was critically acclaimed. Most people didn't like it at least at the time. I liked it, that was my point. And I think most people who didn't like it at the time, would go back and watch it now would have a completely different view on it.

Exactly, Shane was great. And re-watching that season now makes it even better because you can compare how similar current Rick is to Shane back then and how valuable it would be to have Shane now.
I also hated Dale when I first watched that season, couldn't stand him, but watching now I appreciate his character a lot more.

I liked this less than the pilot, but I still liked it. It had it's moments. It seems to be trying for the atmosphere that it needs to have in order to separate itself from the nihilism of it's mother show. I liked the shock of the principal, and the empty space had the creepy vibe the show is going to need. And I also liked the widespread panic of the riot. We haven't seen that many living people at the same time in this series since ... ever I guess. And I really liked the creepy shot of the zombie shuffling toward the police women who was trying to contain the rioters. I also thought the distant image of the neighbor going after the other neighbors across the street, and the sounds of screaming, was a particularly nicely done set.
My issue is mostly with the way they're setting up the narrative. Splitting up the family gives us dual storylines, but we're dealing with characters we have little feeling for still, so it almost hardly matters. Of course sticking the nuclear families together may create some additional drama, which I'm sure is the motive of the kid having the addiction as well. But boy does it not seem like they'd need it. The stuff with the daughter and the boyfriend feels tacked on too.
It almost feels like The Last of Us' opening chapter handled the outbreak panic as well. And there are certainly entire chapters in the World War Z stuff that could be done as one off episodes that would give you a nice anthology of the outbreak. Like the kid's seeming preparedness, who's his uncle, and why does he know so much? And do these people live in a world where George Romero never existed, the word Zombie should exist.
I guess my concern is how are they going to cover the scope of this global outbreak by keeping us tethered to this one family? Survival, which is the focus of the mother series, sure, that can be done with the original group. And even Urban Survival, can be handled here, and maybe that will wind up being the focus, which it almost has to if they want this to run for more than 20 episodes. But the overall root of the outbreak, and it's effects globally, just can't be addressed, while also worrying about weather or not this kid can dry out from opiates, or if the girl can get over the loss of her boyfriend.

With splitting them up and them talking about the desert I keep wondering if they have a vacation house or cabin somewhere there, or a specific are they are planning to meet at, or just saying head anywhere in the desert and hope we'll meet up.

Although I really have to question there decision to unleash thousands of walkers upon the compound, killing tons of soldiers and destroying that safezone, all to get there 2 people back, one of which who voluntarily went there to help people.
