Which did you prefer?

IMO I found Oblivion better because of the quests/storylines. A lot of variety and quality to be found. Skyrim on the other hand had superior game mechanics and combat/fighting system. Obviously the graphics are superior in Skyrim but you have to judge both games in their retrospective eras so I will call it a wash visually. I found majority of Skyrim's quests/storylines to be very basic and similar to eachother. Had a few good spots but I felt rather disconnected with the story and it got repetitive really fast. Oblivion on the other hand I felt had really strong quests. The thieves guild for example.... When you had to break into the imperial tower... Just simply epic.... The Dark Brotherhood... In fact I might go and do a new run through now,,

So I pick Oblivion because of the quests and contents

Never finished either one. Hero story was never attractive enough to pull me away from the attractions of playing god and murdering innocents in both games.

I've played it on both but it's definitely better on PC because of mods and what not

:lol No. I tried for 100% on one of them, and that was probably the least fun I remember playing a game. I'm well in the minority on that. Gamers love those achievements

I guess as much as big sandbox RPGs are about the storyline, it's as much about the environment and it's interactions

Fallout: New Vegas

Top 5 game IMO.

Tried to get into The Witcher. May go buy the game later, but it was fun the little bit I did play.

These games arent really my thing either, but I do enjoy the open world concept.

Obsidian makes the best RPGs, Pillars of Eternity is also a masterpiece.

kotor 2 Also

Lucas arts made them rush the game and it was a shell of what it should have been at release. It ended up getting a full restoration and all the missing content was added and it's one of the best rpg's i've ever played. Surpasses Kotor 1 IMO.

See I liked New Vegas, I liked the Mafia concepts, and GTA, but I like the whole idea of 'making my own world' type thing. Thats what I liked a lot about 'The Witcher'. Every choice mattered. Same thing with New Vegas.

Its not so much the RPG as it is being able to develop the character throughout the story, and those developments having an impact, for me anyway.

I only played a couple hours of Oblivion, so I can't judge it. I really have to go back and play it through. With Skyrim I completed a ton of quests but only did the Vanguard/Vampire downloadable content. I really liked it at first, but it got boring after awhile. Your character easily overpowers everything after a few hours. It's just endless quest. I stopped after I finished the main quest. Oblivion's landscape is bland in comparison to Skyrim, but I heard Oblivion has terrific quests.

I'm rather certain that skyrim has been out on ps4 for ages.

I play a heavily modded [pirated] skyrim on my labptop, but there's a decent amount of fooling around you'll have to do to prevent CTDs/memory leaks. Luckily there's videos on youtube that can teach you about using mod organizer/ini tweaks, even if you know absolutely nothing about computers.

Other than that, I plug an HDMI cable to to the tv, plug in my xbox controller to my laptop, and it's as if I'm playing it on a console but with all the added benefits of the PC version.

Fallout: New Vegas
New Vegas uttlerly shits on FO3. It's incredible how Obsidian managed to create a much more interesting and compelling gameworld than Bethesda did in fo3.

also as someone who played fo1 and 2, it feels a lot more like a proper sequel to the series. New Vegas should have been Fallout 3 and Fallout 3 should have been Fallout: Washington DC

I take Skyrim, graphics and mechanics were much improved. Barbarian North hardship gave it a nice atmosphere.

Also I much prefer the dragon random effect than the portals to hell, which I hated and took away from the complete freedom of the game.

Although leaving those sewers and seeing the capital from afar for the first time was a really bad ass moment in Oblivion

The faction quests were handled so much better in Oblivion. So many quests in Skyrim involved entering a dungeon with one long pathway to a guy you had to kill. Oblivion was much more imaginative in that respect.

Oblivion because Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild were probably 3000x better. Still loved Skyrim though.

What makes absolutely no sense to me is why I don't like fallout, I don't like the guns, but love archery in Oblivion/Skyrim. I can't understand it, I want to like them.

Fallout is too easy if you're a sniper with the VATS system, that's what always turned me off after 30hrs ish

This, the guilds quest lines were awesome in Oblivion. I never finished the main story line but I did a bunch of the guild ones 4 or 5 times on different characters. Didn't get in to skyrim as much.

Wish I'd played it back in the day, I didn't try morrowind until later and enjoyed it but wasn't blown away.

Baldur's Gate 2 was the first RPG that blew my mind with how much I could do (plus I read alot of forgotten realms novels as a kid). That and Diablo were the two rpgs that most impacted me.

Yeah. Kind'a wished I would've played Morrowind back in the day. I don't really get the appeal of it much. But I do like the questing. It was less dungeon crawler and more exploration and talking to people.

Anyway, Skryim with mods I liked better than Oblivion. I also find the main quest better. The radiant quest and dragons are a nice touch, but they could do more on the civil war part (this is where mods come in). The guilds in Oblivion trumps Skyrim tho.

Personal taste is all it is. I can't seem to get into the recent run of games that are like an interactive movie.

Never answered your OP. I spent more time on Oblivion. I'll vote for that one

For some reason I had more fond memories playing Oblivion than Skyrim. Thought the whole dragon bit was pretty corny. Also everyone already said that the battle system for Skyrim was superior.

Anyone else find that fighting in both games were oddly difficult? I remember turning down the difficuly with oblivion because I kept running out of potions everytime I go to the other dimension. For Skyrim it didn't matter because I broke the game by maxing out sneak/light weapons even when I played a melee 2 handed hammer.

The most enjoyable bit on these two games was the travel. I still remember making the ride / hike to the westernmost part of Skyrim. You made sure you were fully stocked with healing / supplies to make the trip. Unfortunately once you get to the place, fast travel opens up.

Which brings to my point, the reason for fast travel is the sheer number of mindless quests about fetching from point A to B. I think it would play a lot better if you could:

1) Travel to one location on foot / horse
2) Do quests around that area. Quests that doesn't force you to travel to the other side of the map
3) Finish a significant storyline in that area and move on to the next one, on foot / horse.

I think this allows for better storytelling and puts a lot more weight on questing / dungeon raids. Sure I like a LOT of content, but my preference would always be QUALITY over quantity.

Morrowind was the best game of the series and probably the best RPG ever. Neither Oblivion nor Skyrim can hold a candle to that game.

Truth about Morrowind.

On topic - the horrible gameplay and scaled leveling made Oblivion completely pointless and boring to play. By this virtue alone Skyrim was miles better.

Fighting an endless stream of cliff racers and missing with half of your blows is part of the charm.

Player-as-actor.

A mix of real-time and turn based (for Morrowind, moving more towards real-time in Oblivion/Skyrim, moving back towards turn based in ESO.

Inaccessible (imperfect information)

Environmentally Continuous

Dynamic/Non-deterministic (Although some quests might change the game world in a deterministic fashion)
