PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas -- Sandra Bland's mother applauded the decision on Tuesday to rename "University Drive" to "Sandra Bland Parkway" in honor of her daughter.

"I am excited," Geneva Reed-Veal said. "I am overwhelmed, and I am just truly thankful."

But some residents in this small city of roughly 6,000 were less than thrilled by what Prairie View City Council members had voted to do.

"We need to have a very painful discussion to get healing. Because renaming a street doesn't do it," said resident Darryl Johnson.

Another resident said it was just a small start.

"This is something that in the very least should happen so that her name remains as a symbol of the greater good," David Palmer said.
Really?

She is getting a road named after her for committing suicide? I mean, its not my road, or my town, I just thought this was... ironic.

eh

if she set herself on fire in the middle of the city square screaming for a better world?

then could you name a parkway after her?

better than naming it after an 17th century bishop or some rich philanthropist if you ask me. sentimental value >>

Maybe, but all she did was hang herself in her jail cell. That happens every day.

Her whole ordeal might be the biggest thing that ever happen to Prairie View. You're lucky they didn't build her statue as the city monument.

Or, perhaps you could name a street after one of the thousands of innocent children murdered in senseless driveby shootings.
