View Full Version : Why isn't LL Cool J on most people's top 5 MCs list?

Or even GOAT candidate?
His longevity is there. His mainstream appeal is there.
Is it his lack of controversy? Public beefs (I remembered he had a couple)?
He never gets mentioned with the NAS, Jay-Z, Biggie, Pac holy circle. I see a lot of top 10-15 references. What keeps him out the top spot?

Because 99% of his fans wear high heels.

So fanbase keeps him out of the top 5? Seems like a lame reason. Currently isn't that Jay-Z's and Eminem's fanbase?

It should be obvious but I'll give in.

Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Eminem, Jay Z. Give me an argument for LL Cool J to be ahead of a single one of those names. I could name many more names but that is pretty much the standard universal top 5 of all time.

Andre 3000
Mos Def
KRS One
Big Pun
Big L
Kool G Rap

i would say all of them are more underrated than LL Kool J. and higher up the All Time MC list

I wasn't making a statement, I posed a question. You haven't really answered it

Explaining why Em, Pac, Nas, Big, and Hoval are better than LL Cool J is like explaining why 2+2=4. I'm not doing to waste my time doing that.

Did any one of them ever subdue and hogtie an armed robber that broke into their home?

Says the guy who thinks the Weekend is taking over the world? Lol
You're so into trolling with your weed gimmick you're starting to act like every thread is a troll thread. It was a simple question. You could of just answered "because so and so are better" and been done. Sorry for "wasting" your time :lol

He is #1 on the Billboard artist chart. Completely dominating right now and Dark Times, Prisoner, Losers, In the Night haven't even been released as singles yet.

He lacks bangers. His material just isn't that great really, simple as that.

Rock the bells is a classic banger. So is Radio, I'm bad, jack the ripper and who shot ya. I need love was the first main stream hip hop love song and his first three albums were classics. He made Kangols and dookey ropes iconic and was the first rap sex symbol. He battled kool mo dee and Ice- T when they were in they're prime and came out on top. Jay Z, biggie, pac and nas all idolized him. Still putting out music 30 years later, acting in movies & television. Uncle L future of the funk young punks...

He has a handful of classics, mostly from the 80s, I don't really feel like he has an entire CD that is classic. If you look at sometime like Ice Cube till see several classic CDs.

LL is probably like top-30... Not enough good stuff for top-5

Handful of classics? Without LL, rap wouldnt be anywhere near the level it is today. Dude could have a greatest hits collection with like three CD's.

Songs that havent been mentioned in this thread.

-Fuhgidabowdit
-Loungin'
-Doin it
-4.3.2.1
-Around the Way girl
-The Booming System
-Pink Cookies

You guys need to listen to his album cuts, he's definitely at least top ten in my book.

Musically his shit is actually good, plus longevity and more hits than anyone.

1. Nas (Illmatic was legendary and he had some solid albums afterwards)
2. Big L
3. Eminem
4. Rakim
5. Jay Z (I would say Biggie but besides flow, I wasn't a huge fan of Biggie growing up)

Eminem's rap used to be my favorite but for some reason, if I listen to his voice more than 20 minutes I get a headache to be honest.

:oldlol: Posters who don't rap on this forum clowned you dog.
Yeah I saw that 4 bar thread. :facepalm

LL Cool J is borderline top 10; these young ass retards started listening to rap when Lil Wayne jumped on the scene.

Talking about Mos Def being better than Cool J. :oldlol:

If I had to rank rappers based on longevity, impact, lyricism, flow etc.

1) Pac
2) Big
3) Eminem
4) Nas
5) Rakim

Than you have guys like Jay Z, LL Cool J, Big L, Guru, Common, KRS-One and a few others.

See this is what I was referring to. I would reference that to sportmens such as Jabbar and Howe. Dat longevity is unparalleled. His influence is iconic.
If he had died in 2005-2010 I'm sure he'd be considered top 5 status.

His 90s stuff is just not that good...songs like Doin it were targeted toward females. And his typical videos were him shirtless showing off his abs, feeding a girl a strawberry, shit like that.

And while he was busy doing his MC-Casanova shit, rap was being defined by Wu, Biggie, Nas, Dre, Snoop, etc etc...LL took a back seat to all that great 90s stuff. Guys weren't really playing his stuff, the girls were, and he probably got a club play in the 90s just because girls preferred it to the 'real' stuff.

He gets props and respect for his 80s stuff, and for being a pioneer, and that would land him a top-30ish spot for me. But he can't sniff a top-10 on my list.
