i am talking about off-court activities
my vote is for mid 80s to early 2000s.
superstars during those years got good amount of fame unlike earlier eras and at the same time never had to beware of camera phones+ social media thing.
youtube is another place where all games of today's players get posted but only good games from previous era players gets posted.
I am posting this after seeing horace grant's interview where he says that bulls were lucky that there were no camera phones and social media back in the 90s otherwise public would have seen some bad shit.

Always the present because you always make the most money.
Ask Bill Russell or Jabbar if they would rather play today.

i already posted that those eras had it tough. no fame and no money. some guys got fame but nothing compared to magic, bird or jordan.

Even Barkley constantly keeps saying that he was born in the wrong era. Dude would've made $160M+ more, over his career, from salary alone.

80's and 90's. Anyone could be considered a star then, even if their talent and abilities did not deem so fit. Stats were inflated due to the Illegal Defense rules creating rule enforced single coverage and isolation plays known as "Clear outs". Guys like Andrian Dantley or Kiki Vanderwee, or Glen Rice, the list goes on. It was the period of time between where PED's/Steroids/Growth hormones started to be commonly used in the league and before the public scrutiny that exists today. The doping rules were extremely lax. They did not test for PED's until exactly after Michael Jordan retired. It was truly a period of time where anyone could cease the title of 'star'. The dilution of talent, lack of parity caused from the introduction of various expansion teams ensured this.

60s you could fake a 100 point game and everybody believed it.

i'd say right around 1999-2000 when the internet took off
kobe has more global popularity than even michael jordan in some places
in china kobe's a god.
jordans career was before the internet. so hes more of a myth, unknown other than youtube clips around the globe
90's was the best for impact on the US though
jordan couldnt even get enough votes to make the 2003 allstar game
hes just not loved as much world wide and online as kobe or even tmac/vince used to be back then

True. And you have a point about stars today being blacklisted if they do something bad because of instant social media. But still, I would rather be not liked and have 200 million in the bank than be liked and have 20 million in the bank. As long as I have the ability to play at a high level, I play today.
